I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I found this site yesterday and I'm sorry that we are dealing with the side effects of this medication, but I'm glad that there is support available.

It has been a little over a month since I stopped taking Pylera, which is a combination medication with two antibiotics one being Flagyl. I was diagnosed with IBS and originally went to the doctor because I was experiencing various digestive issues. After showing positive results for H. Pylori bacteria I was placed on medication to eradicate the bacteria.

The 12 days that I took these medications was harsh; muscle weakness, anxiety, insomnia, joint aches, numbness/tingling/shakiness in limbs especially left arm, lightheaded, spacey, blurry vision, heavy head feeling, memory issues, eye pain, nauseated, off balanced feeling when walking, the tingling/shaky, these are just some of the symptoms. What is interesting is that several of my symptoms come and go, the intensity ranges from slight to high. The tingling sensation and lightheaded spacey feeling is one of the symptoms that changes throughout the day. I'm taking Ativan which takes the edge off but doesn't totally eliminate the anxiety. I've not been able to consistently drive and I went on a leave of absence from work. I'm an educator and I'm praying that I will be able to return to work for the upcoming school year.

Several weeks ago I had an endoscopy which revealed mild gastritis and a small hiatal hernia. Thank God that the biopsy is negative for h. pylori and celiac. I saw another GI doctor last week who stated that my current symptoms may not be related to the gastritis or hiatal hernia. She even stated that she would not have prescribed the treatment for h. pylori because she felt my original symptoms were not related to the h. pylori bacteria. What is even more profound is that she said the medication might be causing my current symptoms! I'm blessed to finally have a doctor who honestly state that she doesn't know what exactly is going on, but is willing to work with me in regaining my health.

I would like to find some medical journal articles, to share with my doctors, that addresses the side effects many are dealing with after taking Flagyl. Any help would be appreciative.

So here I am looking for support, encouragement, and direction.

I thank God for a very supportive family and the prayers of many in my life. I believe that I will be well again.

WhatNow, I am new to this site and your posts were the first that I read. Just had to thank you for sharing and for providing encouragement. It is unfortunate that any of us are dealing with this, but thank God that we are not alone and there are forums like this.

I know that Paresthesia and Ataxia are listed as side effects and that it will takes time for these symptoms to finally leave me alone. Is there anything that I can do to speed up the process or make it more manageable?

I wake up lightheaded, brain fog, tingling and shaking in the morning. Some days the shaking/tingling sensation have my arms and legs weak. I've noticed that probiotics, kefir, omega oils, magnesium and multivitamins provides some help. I've also been recently diagnosed with an hiatal hernia and gastritis. So I'm trying to heal my gut and manage the side effects of Flagyl. It's been a month since I took that last pill and I'm still dealing with these symptoms. There has been improvement. Hoping for some encouragement.

Tortor, are you still experiencing symptoms? I'm dealing with the tingling, lightheaded, and off balance...not to forget the muscle weakness especially in my left arm.

Hi Ash, sorry to keep asking you questions but I have been soo frustrated having these scary depressive episodes, crying spells, feeling spaced out lethargic and absolutely no drs have offered any help especially the dr who have me the antibiotic. Did you find any specific natural remedies that helped? Do you think what happened to most of us is a form of encephalopathy or neurotoxicity? Thanks for ur support, melissa

Hey Melissa,

I did cupping for six months consequtiely.

That i believe helped alot. It was wet cuppling which drew out the toxicity.

Esp the burning pains i had in my feet fingers and arms.

I was a mess. Although i have lingering symptoms i am handling it better.

Yes it did. After about six months..i thought i had every disease possible and my life was not worth living. I cried every day pretty much!

You will get better. When was your last dose?

I took flagyl for 7 days along amoxicilin.

Hi Ash my last dose was 3 mnths ago 3 days of meds but through the last couple years was given the metronidazole many times with only getting horrible mood swings, this time was mood swings followed by severe vertigo, dizziness, confusion, then depersonalizations and crying spells, lastly headache and tingling left side of face. Then I thought it was getting better til the next month all over again and have had loss of concentration, trouble thinking, memory, brain fog. Now this month all the above but the depression is more severe, feeling out of it brain fog. I just hope it's not an accumulative thing where it's going to get worse and worse. It def though comes in episodes. I def wanna try and avoid psych meds because I wanted to get pregnant but if it doesn't get better ill have to try anything, I'm miserable, and lately I have been crying everyday. I'm usually happy go lucky helping everyone else as a positive influence. It is a scary situation because you don't know when an episode is coming. Plus I'm not eating much lost like 15 pds from depression and nausea.Ughhhhhhhh

There came a point through this where i liked to think i truly believed healing comes from within.

I also began to have faith that really this was simply a blip in life i have to get through.

Drugs put you through so don't add any more to your body which also have side effects. There was a point where i actually was made to believe by dr's it was all in my head. I was forced a prescription by my dr's for depression tablets.

I walked out that day from my surgery having given up on doctors. But i also began to wonder if i was depressed. I went private counseling. And thats when i discovered no it wasn't in my head..my symptoms were really. I was angry upset and scared because of what i was feeling. I felt doomed. I related every disease to my symptoms. I was in a dark dark place.

I would cry alone because i didn't want to upset my family. As it began to go on to months. I didnt want to worry them but every day i would go and cry. This continued for months.

Until i stopped feeling sorry for myself and started thinking about self healing. Healing begins from within. Stress is bad for your body. And i was exhausting my body with stress.

Take charge Melissa. Don't let it control your life.

Hello Melissa. Have you found any improvement with the tingling sensation? I notice that symptoms seem to come and go. Yesterday the tingling/shaky feeling was high, today it's minimum. The lightheaded feeling also varies in intensity throughout the day. I'm also dealing with memory and concentration issues. My doctor is scheduling an MRI of my head and spine to see if we can figure out why I'm having the off balanced, tingling, and lightheaded symptoms.

It's been a little over a month since I took Flagyl and I'm still dealing with symptoms, seeing various doctors, seeing improvement and praying for complete recovery for myself and other.

Hi Ihave faith yes tingling is gone. I am now three half months since flagyl. The vitamin b n d has helped with concentration but it has been very slow. Headaches are on and off been having more energy but with it has come anxiety and being anxious. I think since I was on a low dose of antidepressant it made all my issues soo much worse. Soo horrible, still hoping for recovery. Since this med has serotonin inhibitors it has crazy long lasting psych side effects that add to the physical side effects. Been trying to do deep breathing n excercise. Hope u will feel better soon. Hopefully u will heal faster since u didn't have the effexor I have been taking in ur system. I think it increased my dose then put me into withdrawal. Let me know how u are doing.

Hi Ash, thank you soo much for these words, since drs never admit what drugs they hand out like candy can ruin or temporarily ruin people's lives it is good to know that there are kind people like yourself to talk to and realize that I wasn't the only one going through this. Hello Melissa. Glad to hear that the tingling has subsided; this is very encouraging to me. I notice that I wake up in the morning feeling very spacey/lightheaded. Today after a couple of hours this feeling subsided but kept coming and going throughout the day. Not sure if this is still from the Flagyl or reflux. Anyone dealing with reflux and notice dizziness, off balanced, and shakiness when reflux flares up? I'm taking Zantac and probiotics and would really like to find more natural ways to stop all of this...

Hi I havefaith7, no it's def the flagyl, giving you lightheaded spaced out feeling, off balance, I am still suffering from this and having trouble concentrating, focusing, I feel very much like a less smarter me since flagyl, almost like when I'm sick and my head feels swollen, feel slowed down. I dunno it's hard to explain. I go through days that this is better but then some days not good. I have been questioning if it is the imbalance chemically from this medicine. My vitamins were depleted b and d and who knows what else. I have def felt that this site n seeing a therapist recently help me get through my days. It is soo horrible that no drs know what exactly these meds do or how to fix it. I pray that you and the rest of the people poisoned by this med return to their original health. If I find anything else that helps, ill def let you know. Hang in there.

Melissa, hope your are beginning to see improvement. I am concerned that doctors are not aware of how this medication can affect their patients. My GI doctor said that this medication is very harsh and she would not have prescribed it. She initially stated that my symptoms could be side effects from the medication, but she doesn't think I should still be experiencing these side effects.

I look forward to not experiencing that woosy/spacey/lightheaded feeling coupled with the shakes.

I really would like to hear from others who went through this and are doing better, but I guess if they are doing better they would not continue posting on this site. Those of us still going through could surely use the encouragement.

Hi All,

I don't think anyone can forget what this medication put them through. Just remember healing comes from within.

Change your diet. Stick to natural remedies.

You will eventually see the results. I still have the weird sensation. It feels like my face is stretched at times but i get on because sometimes its not there. And i only had this after flagyl. I live in the UK and getting referrals can be tough.

I took 500 mg of metradinazole 3 times a day for a week. I have never had depression or anxiety till after taking this medicine. It's been a week since the last pill and I have been severely depressed. I can't sleep at night because of my anxiety and have no appetite. I have lost 12 pounds in the last week and a half.
