Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 16) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...
You are having adverse side effects. Does your doctor know? If so, do they believe you? If they do not believe you, QUICKLY move on to another DR. or even ER-the side effects are never the same for anyone. Some are permanent, some are a few weeks, few months-there is NO WAY to tell. I am permanent as my dr. did not listen and I became more and more ill. I have been living in constant pain for over 4 years-on drugs that I would NEVER dream I would ever have been on....The FDA just put a warning on these drugs for perip. neuropathy being a side effect and permanent.
Mel, how long were you on Metronidazole, if that is in fact what you were on. I'd like to know because I also have PN symptoms and your post scared me and made me feel hopeless. Please reply soon. Thank you! Any other explanation of your experience would also be of help. :)
I was prescribed Flagyl 250mg x3 for 3 days for bacterial infection in stomach...i did not know the side effected before taking the medicines..and after 3 days they were the worst side effects...for continous 2-3 weeks i had dizziness, unsteadiness, increase in my blood pressure..muscle fatigue...but then called my doctor and he asked me to take magnesium orotate(at night) and benfotiamine(300mg)...these both helped me to cope up with fatigue and muscle pain..pls talk to your doctor before you take these vitamins...also try to avoid this medication(flagyl)..as soon as you know about the side effects..its almost 3 weeks and I am still weak and fatigues..hope all the side effecte go in next couple of days..but pls see your doctor as soon as you can to get over this medication,,,but my doctor did not agree that all the side effects were due to Flagyl,,,but reading them online...I am 100% confirmed its all Flagyl,,,this is poison,,,stay away....
As of tomorrow, it will be exactly 3 months since I have stopped the Augmentin. Things have gotten A LOT better, but are still not 100%. Taking the Cholestyramine to detoxify has helped a great deal! I also take loads of vitamins and try to drink lots of water. From what I've read in other forums, it generally takes 4-6 months to feel 100% back to normal. The panic I was experiencing is completely gone....the derealization/depersonalization- both gone. The only thing left over is the depression- and it has gotten wwaaaaay better- I just get mild waves of it every other day or so. I think for me, that will be the last thing to go. Another annoying thing that has happened is that I have been breaking out all over my chin- I hadn't had a zit in 10 years. That is because my body is desperately trying to detoxify of this poison- it's a side effect of the detoxification. Anyway, please hang in there- you will be FINE. It seems like you are permanently damaged, but that is absolutely not true- I have to tell myself this everyday. The body has an incredible ability to heal itself. I am SO MUCH better than I was last month- there really is no comparison to how I felt last month. I am almost back to normal- I'd say I'm 90% better. I tried to leave you my email address on my last post, but this site wouldn't let me... ugh. Take care!
Hi DCLC, I reread your posts and your story is very close to mine even the time period. It was a year since my last dose July 2nd. of this year. I too have weeks of thinking it's gone and weeks or months to where I feel hopeless with the weird sensations in my arms and legs, mostly legs. Could you please tell me how you are doing now? Thanks! I hope you are doing well. :)
dgirl, I'm so glad to hear that you are doing so much better. I hope to find the Cholestyramine you speak of. It would be nice if we could exchange emails on here. I believe there is a way if done through the administrator but have no idea how to. Sounds like you are doing all of the right things and it's paying off. Thanks for giving me hope with your story. :)
I'm so sorry to hear that you've gone through so much with this so called medicine, DCLC. Since it was over the holiday weekend last year when I took it, I called the pharmacist who told me that it was probably the high heat that was affecting me this way and that I shouldn't stop taking it. This was before the tingling and heavy leg feelings. I only took a few more doses after that phone call. However, looking back I wonder if I had only listened to my body and stopped then would I be experiencing such turmoil now. I too wish there was a group of us who could somehow sue the pharmaceutical company. I sure would be willing. This medication should be taken off of the market!!! Some doctors get me mad. If they had to take the stuff or their family members and they had these types of nerve damage from it, they wouldn't be saying it's not from the drug. At this point I don't trust antibiotics in general or other pain drugs. We're guinea pigs and they don't know or care what effects these have on one's body or mind. Especially long term. Okay I've done my ranting. Please know that I'm here to talk to. Even if it's to get some of your frustration out. :) ... and thanks for replying and sharing, I appreciate it.
Cipro & flagyl can cause permanent damage, get off that poison asap. Look up new fda warning about cipro!
Will update as the days go by.
I was prescribed a 10 day course of Flagyl by my dentist for a gum infection . On the 3rd day I started having pain in both legs and my lower back. I did not stop because I feared the gum infection would not go away. Now I am seriously considering stopping I. I still have 2 more days left.My legs still hurt and it's very uncomfortable. I am worried about any damage.
hello everyone, im 26 and around june/ july became ill with various infections, so i had been on 4 diffrent course of antibiotics and medications, as i had not got better i was referred to hospital to gets scans done e.t.c aand as a final descison from the doctor i needed a stronger dose of antibiotics and a longer course, metronidazole as one and it was intended as a 14 day course. I wanted to be better so bad that i would have taken anything but if i knew how i was gonna feel after taking this awful drug i would definitely have reconsidered, 2 months have passed since finishing my course and for these two months i have really bad muscle weakness in my right leg which developed into ankle pain also. Now its seems to be progressing to my other leg and my arms are shaking. i have severe anxiety a prob i never had before. i struggle to hold my 7 month old baby and the dizziness i have suffered makes getting around with my baby and 2 year old toddler a miserable, dangerous and painful experience. Having a new baby this year was meant to be a joyous occasion but i have had nothing to smile about these days as the uncomfortable sensations and mental feelings im experiencing are just getting worse, i will be seeing a doctor soon and i hope to get answers or receive some kind of hope that this is only a tempory phase and over time i will feel better. fingers crossed. As for everyone else i feel your pain and know how awful this is, i hope you all get answers and dont have to live with this forever . .. Christina
Hi Christina, I'm so sorry to hear your story. I don't know about you, but I feel like a victim of this poison they call medication. I can't imagine having to take care of a baby or small children feeling as you do. If I were you and you I would go to a well researched naturopath, one that has dealt with toxic poisoning. I'm trying to save enough money to do that myself but it's been over a year for me so I hope it's not too late. I'll be praying for you. Keep me posted as to how you are doing. Hugs
hey Ive taking metronidazole for a week and I took the last dose about 4 days ago on 9/21/2013 now but now im itching uncontrollable in my lady area....what should I be do should I be worried and should I be going to the er or the doc?
Hi, It might be a yeast infection which sometimes a person gets after antibiotics. But only a doctor would know unless you've had one before and can tell. I would pick up some good probiotics to take because as you probably already know an antibiotic kills the good bacteria along with the bad which affects the flora of the stomach and also the privates as in yeast infection. An antifungal for yeast infection can be picked up at your pharmacy. Hope all goes well.
Thank you for your concern to warn me. But I did finish it...... (being in Thailand, it's a bit like pick your poison....., I was worried the infection would flare up again if I discontinued, iin a tropical climate here bacteria grows extremely fast and I really did not want them to give me anything stronger) Amazingly on Sunday morning which was still 2 days before finishing.I had no more pain , was a bit weak, but managed to stand up and sing in church, and it seemed all less at night which was always the worst. Now I am ok but my stomach is still a little funny. Strangely during the course I did not like eating except creamy stuff, like pasta carbonara , which seemed to minimize the upset stomach. no acidy sauces
Drinking lots of water seemed to minimize the bad sick feeling. In backtracking what could have aggravated the symptoms was that I had a bad cough and took cough medicine Levotrop around the same time and it most likely contained alcohol. Now that the ordeal is over I am taking greek yoghurt and extra vitamins and trying to eat healthy. I am considering detox when stronger. I am off coffee. I will NEVER take metrodinazole again for sure.
Thank you DLC and Whatif for your concern. I did finish the course as being in Thailand , knowing them they will be forced to prescribe stronger meds,as bacteria here multiplies rapidly. in backtracking what really aggravated the symptoms was that I was taking coughsyrup, levotrop at around the same time, whicn most likely contained alcohol.Amazingly Sunday I had no more pain and was able to stand up and sing, so I just finished them.It seemed to help to drink lots of water in between.also strangely enough creamy foods like pasta carbonara helped to minimize the upset stomach and stomachpain, that came with it. I am ok now, just a bit weak at times. Taking Greek yoghurt and extra vitamins and trying to eat healthy.I am considering when I am stronger. After this ordeal I will surely NEVER take metrodinazole again!
I'm assuming this reply was for me, thank you I"m going to just go back to the docotor and get a Follow up because I'm something like a worry wart and I have to put my mind at ease but thanks so much I'll give an update when I find out wha'ts going on.
You're welcome and yes it was for you. Do let me know when you have some news. :) and thank you for your reply.
Hello my confuzing story begins with a tooth ache and infection. The Dentist would not see me until the infection is arrested. Fine, one week of taking Amoxicillin subdued the infection and two teeth where extracted. The following couple of days was very painful, to my eye, temple, ear, throat, jaw and cheek bone. I couldnt get to the Dentist on the weekend so i went to urgent care. There they gave me pain meds, and IV antibiotics, while i waited for the blood work results. The blood work came back negative for any signs of infection (Clue#1). I was then advised to go to the hospital where again i was looked over by a different Dr who stated "Well i dont see any signs of infection (clue #2) , but we treat this very aggressively because if the infection gets to your heart it will be a bigger problem!" Then i was put on a home IV for three days with IV Metronidazole, oral Cephalexin and pain meds. I continuoslly got sicker and sicker (Clue#3) but had no pain from the tooth extraction sites. After 3 days they gave me a 24 hr dose of IV metro, with some oral ones to take home and start taking 2X a day the next day until finished, along with Cephalexin 4X a day as well. The dentist would not see me until the (supposed) infection was arrested again. I got sicker and sicker in other ways, blisters in my mouth, dizzy, blurred vision, hot cold spells, urgent bowel movements, itchy rash all over torso, frequent urgent naps like i was going to faint if i didnt lay down emediately. Loss of appetite, confusion, depression, tremors, constant itch around rectum, rapid shortness of breath. I thought i was fighting off an infection, and these where the results of that fight. I started my own research as i was spiraling downward and questioning all my symptoms. I pushed to see another DR as i still could not get to see my family one. This Dr pointed out i was having an allergic reaction to the drugs and stop taking them now! I then went to the dentist who said that all of my initial symptoms are that of Dry Socket! If they didnt see signs of infection, then why treat you? Now a week later i still am wiped out, exausted, get dizzy, confused, short of breath, and feel like my whole body is filled up with goo, and chronically tired. I feel beat up from the inside out! What does this stuff do to you if you never need it in the first place?
Please get help ASAP for the side effects you are having from the Cipro. I am over 4 years living in chronic pain from permanent side effects that the Drs. would NOT take seriously at all. After a month, I could not walk, sit up, open eye, nothing-the stomach pain was unreal in the evening. The weakness continues to worsen to this day. Do take liquid magnesium as it might help get rid of any Cipro that is left in the body as people that take magnesium do not get results from these meds as the magnesium some how blocks it--it reads in the insert. I took it way too late but did tell a woman to take it and after three months the pain was gone and she just is left with some foot pain which is little compared to where she was...I know it is frightening to hear but your reaction is serious and MUST be taken that way and there is no cure..just action to see if it will go away...
