Oh my goodness...I am a mother of two. 5 and 10 years old. I think stress was the leading cause of my heart acting "crazy". Just general stress. I have had an irregular heartbeat from childhood. Landed in the ER with terrible ekgs. Doctor put me on metoprolol 25 mg. twice daily until I see the heart doc. Before hair was falling out a tad...mind you I am a hairdresser, but this is terrible! Been on metoprolol 1 month and I am going bald in the front, fast. I am 31 years old. :( ## You should contact your doctor immediately, this is actually listed a serious side effect of Metoprolol, it is usually signifies more serious ones occurring and you will probably need to be switched to a different medication. I only have moderately high blood pressure sometimes. My question is should I take the metoprolol er even when my blood pressure is normal? I have asked this question twice to my provider, and have never felt answered. ## Metoprolol is a beta blocker, that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure. And yes, you should continue to take the medication, exactly as prescribed, even if you get a normal reading. The only time you should change this, is when your doctor has advised you to do so. There are 2 reasons for this: 1) You have no way of knowing when your blood pressure is going to go up, you can't possibly monitor it all the time, so there is no way to only use a medication for this on an as needed basis. 2) These medications take awhile to reach their full effectiveness...

Been on this for a month and heart is still racing at times. Sometimes it's ok, on the slow side, but like tonight it's 105 beats per minute. This happens almost every day at some time during the day. ## What is your normal heart rate? What are you doing that has been causing it to go up, if anything? Have you been smoking, taking in caffeine, or etc? Even if you are on a medication, there are certain times your heart rate will still go up, whether or not it's a problem depends on why it is occurring. If you've been active, it's going to elevate your heart rate, which is actually what you want to occur at such times. If you've been drinking caffeinated coffee, or sodas, it is going to cause your heart rate to elevate.

United Healthcare is raising the copay on this ptescription and recommending Metoprolol tartrate, . arvedilol or atenolol. Titled subject is $45 in 2012 vice $3. for alternatives. Are the alternatives safe, same side-effect, and would my doctor have to change the prescription with my supplier? ## Yes, they all pretty much have the possibility of causing the same side effects. However, the Carvedilol is known to cause them far less often than the other options you mentioned. And yes, your doctor would have to give you a new prescription, because a pharmacy can't just change it, without their approval. Here are more details on these medications: Are there any other questions or comments?

Have 46 BPM at rest; now cut 25mg Metoprolo tablet in half to lower dose as prescribed by cardio doc. had ascending aortic aneurysm repair, and aortic valve replaced (bovine) in 2003. What is going on here? I do exercise quite regularly, but 46 kinds of has me concerned, even though I am still able to exercise. Any answers, thanks. ## Well, there is really no way for anyone to say what's going on from just the limited information in your post. There are several issues that could cause this and only your doctor is going to be able to help you get to the root of the problem. The Metoprolol might be working too well and making your heart beat to slowly. I've had that happen with several medications myself. How long have you been on the lowered dosage? Has there been any improvement?

is there any difference between Metoprolol Tarta 50mg and Metoprolol Succ ER 50 mg? ## The succinate and tartrate just refer to the specific chemical salt that the manufactured used in their process to create the drug, however, if they are both ER, then they are the same and will work in the same manner. The ER stands for extended release, so is not a time released formulation, then there could be a difference, because a regular release formulation won't allow for the same blood pressure or cardiac control, throughout the day. Are there any other comments or questions?

I am 31, my Dr. diagnosed my with a leak in my heart back in April. He suggested that I take Metorpolol tartrate 25mg twice a day. Its a small round pill, scored in the middle for splitting with M18 on the other side. I have just decided to take it and with in two weeks I have lost 20% of my hair. I had long thick dark hair and now it is already thin and I can almost see right through it. I really want to stop taking this medicine. I have experienced some sharp pains across my head, lots of nausea, and sleepyness and difficulty focusing and many other complications. Has anyone else had these problems? ## I was recently put on this same pill (Mylan version) 1 month ago. I have seen hair around my sides come out, tiredness, cold feet & dizziness. I take a pill twice a day. Is each pill 50 mg, or combined they equal 50mg? ## Hi Connie, What is the imprint on the pills that you take? There are 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg pills available. Based on your description I can only assume that they are 50mg, but would need to look up the imprint for verification. If you are taking this medication for high blood pressure, the usual dosage for metoprolol is extremely patient specific and should be individualized. The typical initial dosage of metoprolol is 100 mg daily in a single or divided dose as determined by your health care provider. The dose may then be increased weekly until the goal blood pressure is achieved. The dosage range for metoprolol is 100-450 mg per day. You should consult with your doctor to determine which dose of metoprolol ...

He sleeps all afternoon, has fainted more than once, has excessive sweating sometimes, loss of coordination when walking down stairs, and severe dizziness after getting out of a car or laying down. He went to the emergency room, got every test and was pronounced healthy. I am really mad that the nurse practioner or doctors in the er did not connect his fainting with this drug. I am demanding they take him off of it. Can Metoprolol cause heart failure? ## My husband had congestive heart failure, and doctor did tests. He had to N>Y>Pres.Hospital, for Aortic Valve replacement, and triple By-Pass. ## I was having chest pains. Went through stress test, then it was recommended I go through cardiac catheterization. No major blockage was found, so no stent was put it. But, I was sent home with prescriptions for Crestor, Plavix and Metoprolol. I have known I had high cholesterol for many years, but refused to treat it because of my intolerance for drugs. Diet has not affected it, I lost 80 lbs and changed the way I ate and my cholesterol level did not change. I was fuzzy from the procedure so I didn't catch everything the physician said. Follow-up in a couple of weeks. I am not sure why the Meto...
