Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 9)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Re: Juliya (# 2393) Expand Referenced Message

Also, I just picked up the ivabradine and it says take twice daily with food

2 questions:

I intermittent fast as a lifestyle and so I don’t see how I’m going to do this :( SO if I take one with food, how important is the 2nd dose with food, or vice versa

Also, how far apart do the doses need to be. The max time and the minimum amount of time you can take doses

I really don’t want to give up intermittent fasting. I’m so irritated at all of this and my body

Yeah, I was looking up medical journals on the afib side effects and then someone else told me that we have to remember that the medication was created for heart failure patients and most all studies were done with that criteria and another one ( I forget) and most likely those patients were prone to afib. I have asked quite a few people who are on it ( an IST group) and so far no one has had afib as a side effect. Some have had the light sensitivity though.
The consensus for the drug is that it really does help lower the sinus node output to speed things up. I’m just hoping I’ll be able to wean off at some point without it going back up. Most also say it had very little side effects especially compared to Beta blockers and traditional channel blockers. I guess it’s worth trying. Like you said I can always stop.

Ugh, I’m debating if I should get my hormones checked out or it’s just useless. This is all like you said l, our body repairing from the chaos metoprolol created.

I have had my hormones tested. Everything is normal aside from epinephrine and norepinephrine are elevated. Had a CT scan fir an adrenal tumor, but it was all clear. My vitamins on the other hand were WAY off. Elevated B12 levels, but I was severely deficient in Vitamin C , D and A. My vitamin C and D were almost non existent. I had to start taking liposomal Vitamin C and D because of the GI issues my body wasn’t absorbing them through food naturally.

I just looked it up. There is an adverse side effect of atrial fibrillation. But it’s only 8% and that’s VERY low. Other than that just dizziness, tiredness , and possible light sensitivity. If your doctor told you it’s safe and you need it. You could at least give it a try.

Re: RV (# 2387) Expand Referenced Message

I’ve been doing ok. I got the medication down to 100.00 bucks for a 2 month supply so I’m happy about that. I’m scared to try a new medication but I’m also hoping this will really help everything to settle down and then maybe I can wean off and be normal.

Juliya, do you think ivabradine will cause more issues or no because it was created for the sinus node and so specific. Most people I’ve asked who have been on it, have had no issues. I just don’t want to create MORE problems than what I’m dealing with. I’m so nervous to take it

Are you feeling better?

RV: sorry you had to go to the ER. That’s rough

I lost 40lbs. And I was only 120lbs to begin with. I am now up to 94lbs. So it’s a process but I am slowly starting to gain weight back.

Re: RV (# 2386) Expand Referenced Message

It’s not POTS. Metoprolol does not work on POTS patients. I was tested at John’s Hopkins with a tilt table test. Your body is just trying to regain homeostasis from the imbalance of glutamate and gaba. You’ll probably have all the symptoms of MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) too. They both have the same symptoms. You’re body is stressed because of the lack of gaba and is trying to rebuild. It will all eventually calm down.

Exactly this is so frustrating and now you have fairly been off metoprolol how difficult is it to get a proper diagnosis and the best possible treatment . How are you doing?

Re: RV (# 2384) Expand Referenced Message

Ugh! All of this is so frustrating.

So my prescription was approved by insurance and when I got the email it said it was 290.00 WITH insurance. Holy crap! That’s still a lot. And what if I hate it :( I’m so nervous to try it even though I’ve heard so many good things about it. I also just really want it to reset my rates. I really don’t want to be on meds long term

Juliya, did you ever get your hormones tested? I can’t remember if you did. Could this be hormone related?

Re: RV (# 2381) Expand Referenced Message

I just did a home test for this because I was wondering the same thing but mine doesn’t go up that high and sometimes not at all. Mostly when I’m doing things.

But how to test is wear an oximeter, lay in bed for 5 min and do not move and do not talk. Look at what the hr is. Then immediately stand up and do not move or talk. If the hr was goes up 30 plus bests and stays there for about 2 plus minutes . Then it could be POTS. Also after 2 minutes lay back down and be super still and if HR immediately drops back down the 30+ Beats it’s a good indicator you have POTS. I would request to be tested with dr

So IST should show up on ecg right? Or it doesnt ? How long are you planning to take this med? Are there any side effects like metoprolol had? did he say anything else apart from IST?

Did anyone of you had GI issues after starting/stopping metoprolol?

Re: RV (# 2376) Expand Referenced Message

IST doesn’t show up on an ecg. It’s a normal sinus rhythm just tachycardia. So besides the sinus tach ecg is normal. Its not a rhythm change.

I read most people take the medication for about 6 months to a year and then wean off to see if the sinus node has reset.

Ivabradine has little to no side effects which is the great thing about it. It directly only effects the sinus node to chill out. I’ve asked quite a few people in a group for SVT and all said they had no side effects and it’s really reduced their heart rate. They haven’t Weened off yet. Like juliya said it’s a very expensive drug and most insurance denies it but fortunately mine just approved it for one year.

Today when I was working ( not a strenuous job, I photograph newborns) my heart rate was 155. So ridiculous. I’m really hoping this med helps and doesn’t have side effects.

He is pulling all my records from the other ep so he’ll take a look and see if I have SVT. I don’t know if they’ve actually caught an episode or if I even have it. He also needs to connect to my loop recorder.

Re: Juliya (# 2377) Expand Referenced Message

Ugh I’m hoping they’ll approve it. I did see where it was 600.00 for the 60 pills he prescribed on the Walgreens summary but he’s not ready so I don’t know if my insurance has approved it yet. He said for me to cut the pill in half so maybe the pills will last longer. I hope they approve it as it does seem promising.

I have to go to his office to so they can link up to my loop recorder and then fill out a disclosure to have them get all my medical records from previous EP. He seems way more engaged to help figure this out and help me feel better: the other EP way more like you’re fine, see you in 4 months. Clearly living with a high heart rate is not fine nor does it feel good.

Hoping this works

How are you guys feeling today?

I’m still kind of nervous to start a new drug after the beta blocker but after reading and researching ivabradine seems to be ok

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2375) Expand Referenced Message

Oh that’s amazing!!!! It’s an expensive medication though! They tried switching me from metoprolol to that but my insurance wouldn’t cover it. It was $1,500.00 for a 90 day supply. So I had to opt out. It was way too expensive!
