Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 96)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Thank you so much for your answer, it really means a lot to me.

Did you try any detox methods while going through withdrawal? I'm considering taking activated charcoal and a detox bath this evening, but I am a bit unsure about how it will affect my symptoms...

Re: Piano (# 1902) Expand Referenced Message

I take L-theanine for anxiety, plus some magnesium. But take it one day at a time, check your blood pressure and heart rate while coming off of it. I'm almost out of it but not there yet. I say maybe a week or two more to see where my body is at. Also lemon balm during the night helps for sleeping.

I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but it seems like the withdrawal symptoms are gone. It took almost two weeks. I really hope I'm done with the withdrawals. Hugs for everyone struggling with metoprolol withdrawal.

I recently moved, and had to switch cardiologists. I have been taking 100mg flecainide twice daily along with 25 mg metoprolol succ. divided in half by two doses. 12.5mg. My new doc, wants me to stop the metoprolol by weaning off of it. Taking only half a day for a few days and then stopping entirely. Today was the first day, I tried not taking it in the morning. By 1pm I started feeling light headed, and sort of tingly. Checked my BP was 154 over 92. So I took half a pill. Still feeling strange. Not sure if it's the met. or just anxiety because I have read so much about stopping it. I do know I don't feel right. Called the Docs office, but they simply told me, to go to emergency if anything bad happens. Yeah, what does that mean? The nearest hospital does not accept my insurance. So I will only go, if it's a dire emergency. Unfortunately I don't know what I could consider an emergency. My heart rate has stayed low, just my BP has gone up.

Re: Kenny (# 1911) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Kenny. I don’t want to give you medical advice. I can just share my experience. I went from 25 mg to 19, 6.5 and 12.5 for 2 weeks. Then 6.5 twice a day for a month. Then 6.5 fir 2 weeks then off. I was only on it for 3 months. I also was not taking another medicine. My withdrawal symptoms weren’t related to high BP. Mostly horrible anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations. It may take a few days for a dosage to level off. Hope this helps. Ask as many questions as you need to

I took 25mg Metoprolol Tartate to calm me down before an interview, I only took it once during the day at 10:45 in the morning, I was fine for the day and then at 00:44 midnight I had palpitations and a SEVERE anxiety attack. The anxiety attack lasted for 3 hours. It’s been nearly 7 days since I took that horrible pill. And I’m still getting anxiety episodes, not as severe as before. I also have a burning sensation at the back of my head and neck and this sensation is CONSTANT 24/7. Can a single pill taken once cause this much mayhem?

Re: Thomas (# 1913) Expand Referenced Message

Well the pill does dilate your arteries so its possible that is can create other problems if a clot travels somewhere else while the arteries are dilated.

Re: Peggy (# 1912) Expand Referenced Message

The doctor said I should only tape off with a half dose, for two days. Today was the second day. Except for some slightly high BP and a little lightheadedness, I have managed so far. Tomorrow is the real test. I'm supposed to stop it entirely. I made it the past 24 hours without taking any, so hopefully tomorrow I will be ok. Just took the last half dose. Strangely my heart rate is still only in the fifties.

Mine was low for a month after I stopped. It remains in your system longer than they say. Hope you continue to do well.

I'm feeling slightly better now, but now I'm experiencing depersonalisation symptoms. The burning sensation in the back of my head has moved towards the top of my head, and is less intense now.

Re: Thomas (# 1917) Expand Referenced Message

I also get burning sensation but on right side of face. Also have scars coming out of nowhere on left side of head and some in other areas of head face. I did get the burning sensation on the back of my head on the past but not anymore.

Have been on Metoprolol 25MG for over a year. Had no problem starting med or any of the side effects described so far. However for some reason since the first of this year my blood pressure has been all over the place and my primary refered me to a Cardiologist who in turn said to stop Metoprolol 25 MG LOW DOSAGE TO SUCH A HIGHER DOSEand prescribed Labetalol HC 300 MG twice a day. Asked Pharmacist about withdrawal problems that I had concerns about and was told that they were the same class of med so should b ok. I was only taking 1 in am 1/2 at bedtime and was told to take wi food. After reading about all the problems that have happened I don’t know what’s to do! Especially going from The low dose of Metoprolol to a higher dose with Labetalol. Suggestions ?
