Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 83)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Hello Norma I too have a lot of acid reflux, gas in stomach when eating anything, and it seems right after that is when I feel anxious,I'm trying to stay strong but this is the hardest thing I've ever endured
I am going to an endocrinologist next week for the first time. Can you tell me what to expect? Will they be taking blood tests, other tests, while I am there? What do they examine?
I have had a setback here recently and have been extremely anxious with some nausea and some stomach pain....lots of muscle spasms.... and I was told after an eye exam that all was normal but I had slightly bulging eyes, a sign of hyperthyroidism. I made that appointment because I had a few days of flashing light in my peripheral vision for ten to twenty minutes.
My sciatica and arthritis have been kicking up a level.
Hey Matt, yes they will do a few diagnostics on blood, saliva, and possibly have you to take home a u/a kit for the cortisol level. They will possibly scan the thyroid but they can actually do a feel evaluation with their hands and determine the swelling as well, but blood work will definitely confirm it.
Thanks, Monique, I am at 4 months off and have seen some really bad days lately out of nowhere. So I keep looking for answers.
Thanks Monique! I hope you have better days! I'm so disappointed because I was feeling better and then I got hit again ??
Monique, Did your endocrinologist visit result in any medication/supplemets or diet adjustment to help with anxiety and stomach problems?
And did he/she nix the idea that it was due to metoprolol use and withdrawal?
Hey no because my test results inconsistent, some showed high levels of cortisol others normal, the thyroid test were normal, but I do have to go back in December to repeat
Saw an endo for the first time today. He did not think my anxiety was due to over production from the adrenal glands, but is sending me to get my catecholamine level tests via blood to make sure.
However he thought 4 months of withdrawal from M was too long to continue experiencing anxiety and that the M probably had been masking the underlying high anxiety. Logical but wrong, I believe. If It did not return to the reduced anxiety level after going back on it, (which I did for a month) then how could that be masking it?
He asked me if I would consider taking a beta blocker again. They all ask that question and my answer is always the same.
Never.
Matt, my doctor implied the very same thing about my anxiety, but I honestly believe that most doctors don't have a clue what this drug does to those who have a sensitivity to it. It obviously has a strong effect on the central nervous system to one degree or another, but I have yet to hear a logical explanation from any doctor. All I know for certain is that I never had anxiety until I started having problems with Metoprolol. I've been off of it since June of last year, and I still have issues every now and then. Even a cup of coffee will trigger it, and I used to be able to drink an entire pot of coffee at one time.
It's been kind of quiet here lately. Hope everyone is doing well!
Very quiet, must be the election.
My blood test for catecholamine levels came back normal, so the problem has to be the M withdrawal, which continues. Everything else has been ruled out.
I am nearing five months off. Any new medicine I take now, especially blood pressure meds must be stopped because of very bad side effects. It may be my age but it seems as if, after M is stopped, everything has changed, especially drug sensitivity.
Yeah, I've noticed an increased sensitivity to most drugs, too. I'm doing okay, for the most part, but I still get bouts of anxiety and BP spikes on occasion. It usually lasts for about three days and then disappears, and it usually occurs about every six weeks or so. You'd think that I'd be completely over it after 17 or 18 months, but that hasn't been the case. Thankfully it isn't necessary to take any drugs for my blood pressure, though. Other than my occasional bouts, it's remained pretty normal.
Hello everyone. Quiet for the holidays?
Getting cold and dark up here in New England. Ice hockey weather.
I am approaching 5 months off this week and I am still not where I want to be. It is better, not as bad as the first two months, but not where I want to be. Still nausea, anxiety and malaise.
I especially notice the anxiety at wakening and in the afternoon when I lie down to rest. It comes in spurts and can be out and out fear at times.
Hope you are all healing. This is a tough battle.
Hello Matt good to hear from someone,my days were really GREAT,then a bad day when i went to my doctors appointment,I think cause I've set in the thought of bad news whenever I go,so I automatically became over anxious
Hello All, it's been quite awhile since I have checked in. I am about a year off this horrid drug, and I still have bad days like Jimbo out of the blue. I have become SUPER sensitive to what were previously helpful supplements, and any pharmaceutical. I wear a medical alert bracelet now to that effect. I still take natural tincture for hyperthyroid. I see the doctor every 7-8 weeks to check in. I wish I had never heard of M, I hate that my life and health have been hijacked by this garbage. Progress has been slow but relatively steady, altho the bad days feel like forever. One day I want to just live again without having to constantly wonder if the day will be easy or hard, or having to monitor every system inside me for a hint as to how the day will be. Kepp up the good fight folks!
I am still here too! Almost a year off as well. I was diagnosed a couple months ago with Crohns disease. Thanks to the beta blocker, i am now so sensitive to any medicine, just like Lauren. Any pills that i put in my mouth get me so lightheaded and dizzy and I just feel awful. It also remains in my system longer than a normal person. So the "chemo" type drug i have to take is pretty harsh. I know that I am over the withdrawal but the lasting effects from it suck!!
What tests did they run to check for crohn's disease? I had a barium swallow and endoscopy done and they told me I had gerd . I get inflammation in my stomach sometimes and heartburn. I also stopped taking lexapro for anxiety .
I had a colonoscopy done. And some bloodwork to check for inflammation.
Hello my name is Anthony Bryant, how about a month-and-a-half ago I started having heart palpitations, I was so scared I went into the ER 3 days in a row, they put me on beta blockers Metoprolol. This seemed to calm my heart down each time, but it's funny when they checked my heart out everything was normal EKG Echo for my heart, even my blood work and thyroid was fine, the doctors told me sometimes people's heart just beats off Rhythm sometimes, so they prescribe a pill form of Metoprolol, all together with the ER and the pills was one week on this drug. On my last two days of that week I took half a pill only. Then I completely got off upon my research I found out that magnesium citrate help me out dramatically it stopped my heart palpitations, but just being on that drug Metoprolol 4 that one week, I had some chest discomfort, night sweats lightheadedness, but it did go away, if anybody is dealing with heart palpitations and anxiety attacks please look for magnesium citrate, organic gmo-free. I hope this helps, Halleluyah
I have been taking Metoprolol Succinate ER 25mg once a day for the last 2 years for high blood pressure I am currently weening off of this drug. I've had side effects off and on during the 2 years. I do not like how this drug makes me feel or how it affects my heart. After some research on magnesium and the effects it has on enzymes and muscle functions in the body and how absolutely necessary it is for the body and heart I decided to give it a try. Just quickly: Magnesium relaxes muscles whereas calcium contracts them. Arteries have smooth muscles that line them so if there is a magnesium deficiency those arteries could narrow producing HBP. 80% of the U.S. population is magnesium deficient due to modern day farming techniques. My BP before starting magnesium therapy (orally Magnesium Glycinate- Doctors Best brand) about 120/80 to 136/88) I also take Lisinopril. Have taken Magnesium for 2 weeks and my blood pressure is too low at 90/68. After a week of weening off of Metoprolol 25mg down to 12.5mg, my BP is back at 124/84 and I haven't noticed and withdraw symptoms yet (thank God). Google or YouTube Magnesium Deficiency or Magnesium Dr. Carolyn Dean. I just thought this could help because it has helped me greatly! Also magnesium usually is not checked for in your normal blood panel like potassium, sodium, chloride and calcium is, it's separate specialized diagnostic to get that count. If it is checked for, it's a magnesium blood serum evaluation which is not accurate at all. I hope everyone can get well and get off of this stuff!
I am approaching 6 months off M and feeling better, not perfect, but better; however, over the past month or so, I have developed chest discomfort, a steady pressure in the chest, which seems constant.
Has anyone experienced a new symptom like this after such a long withdrawal?
