Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 69)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Sharon I was on it for about 5 months , the whole time I was on it I had a hard time breathing, sore joints, heart rate , swollen ankles, I've been off now for three weeks and feel terrible! Good luck keep us posted
Hi danny judt wanted to ask you when did you finally start feeling better . I have been off for close to 6 months off and still not all there yet .
JR- what kind of effects are you still having? Today I am very lightheaded and dizzy, heart rate a little high, and having some muscle twitches going on. Im off 5 1/2 mo. How longwere you on and what mg?
Sandra- i have the same symptoms but also anxiety randomly. It feels like my nervous system is still off . Also hate the fatigue i get when i try to do hard activities. Some times i am normal sometimes i get super tired just washing my car. I was on the M for 10 months and i was at 200mgs
Thats exactly what it feels like. Like our nervous system needs to reset! Im still so sensitive to any meds that go into my body. Any idea what we can do to "reset" our system? My anxiety is still there too. I was only on 6mg for 1 1/2 yrs.
Sandra-believe me if i knew i would have told everyone, but from reading this chat I think its a matter of time. Some people are quicker and some take longer.
JR- look up Alpha Lipoic Acid. I have been told it can help the nervous system to heal. I am gonna try it.
For what it's worth, I've been off Metoprolol for over a year now, and while I generally feel pretty good most of the time, I still get a bout of weird stuff every now and then. It comes rather sporadically, but I would venture to say that on average I get a two or three-day bout every three to four weeks, at which time I'll come down with fatigue, heart palps, nausea, dizziness, increased heart rate, anxiety, and just not feeling well. I've been tested for numerous things time and time again, but the tests always come out normal. I'm really beginning to wonder if my nervous system has been permanently maimed by this crap.
Bad day today, first time in almost 2 weeks. Very disheartening. Same EXACT symptoms Jimbo just described. I took some potassium and that helped quite a bit for a few hours, dampened the m-syndrome as I now call it, but then it came slamming back about 30 mins ago. Just took more potassium. Somehow I have to get thru this workday so I can get home. Came on out of the blue thos am while I was at science museum with my Nanny Kid. Their baby is coming in around a week. I am so worried about being able to do my job with this crap going on. I am struggling as it is with a 3 year old. And his mom is now here all the time. So shocking how this comes and goes. I am really bummed. For those of you just starting this journey, you AREN'T crazy, we are here for you. We will continue to fight the good fight together.
Today is just as bad, I am at work trying to act normal. This is especially hard now that my Mom Boss is home on maternity leave for the next 12 weeks. Not sure HOW I'm going to get thru this M-Sydrome episode. I sure hope it goes away quickly and I don't end up with a couple weeks of crap. Same exact symptoms Jimbo lists. Hate this. SO hard to remain hopeful and positive.
Hang in there Lauren! I am at work today trying to stay positive also. Feeling lightheaded and heart rate is high. The heat doesnt help. Im on day 5 of this cycle.
Hello Guys my name is Monique I'm new to the forum I am now day 24 off M I took for 1 1/2 month doc put me on it ,had high heart rate after not getting any sleep the night before to find out I had sleep apnea, did echo, ekg, halter everything normal, but this has been the hardest 2 months of my life, the ANXIETY which spikes it's seems for the most part whenever it wants, shakyness, palpitations, racing heart I'm so scared this will never go away,I've been doing one a days, magnesium 200,I Theanine at times, nobody understands me when I tell them what's going on in my family they all say well the medicine should be out of u by now,but I don't think so,I'm so tired of being depressed and crying everyday
Hi Monique, you are NOT crazy and you are NOT alone. You will find it comforting and informative to read thru these posts from beginning to end. We have all figured out that we are among those whose systems take months or even years to reset from this very damaging drug. Don't give up, don't give in. You WILL get better. You may need to tweak your diet, and make sure to drink plenty of clean water, and eat lots of protein. Some of us have found supplements that seem to help, it seems to be hit or miss. We are all here for you!
Thanks u so much for replying I couldn't enjoy my bday last week,I woke up went to the washroom just felt my heart racing for nothing,so I stayed in home all day..I pray to God it doesn't take years to heal
A quick 800 mg of magnesium will settle that heart rate down, keep some with you at all times. I missed Christmas completely last year, it's been a real struggle. Definitely read thru all the posts here. Others will chime in over the next few days . Chin up!
Hey Monique,
Hang in there, the first 3 months are the worst but like Lauren said you WILL get better. I am almost 6 months off and still get hit with symptoms but they are very slowly getting weaker when they do hit. My good weeks are getting longer which is what you have to look forward too! How are u JR? Prayers for all

Monique I so understand what your going thru! I'm going on week 4, everyone tells me also that it shouldn't be in my system, I was furious with my husband who said its in my Head! It's so depressing I have felt a little better the last couple of days but it comes in waves, I find this forum very helpful to know I'm not crazy! I hope you feel better soon!
Hello Norma yes ur right in waves, thanks for the response, and I do feel so much better when I read this forum and speak with people who truly understand
I took metroprolol for a year and a half. 25mg for a year and the dosage was increased to 50mg for 6 months. After losing 70lbs with diet and exercise I started experiencing dizziness when standing. I was also sweating excessively when working out. After expressing my concerns to my doctor, he told me to cut back to 25mg again. I did so for a week while monitoring my blood pressure and heart rate. With improved numbers I was told I could stop taking the drug. Since coming off I have felt extremely fatigued and experience headaches daily. I did not have any adverse reactions while taking the drug, on the contrary I believe it helped my anxiety, it lowered my blood pressure and heart rate and I didn't experience headaches nearly as often as I had previously. After reading most of the posts on this blog, I am hoping that I will not have to wait months or even years to stop feeling so tired.
