Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 67)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

CJJ8S, JR, and Sandra how long were you on this nightmare drug and dose is my question? I was put on it in November 15, took 50mg metoprolol succinate er once a day for 3 months and had all kinds of problems. Then switched Docs only to find my problems were an allergic reaction to meds? New Doc wanted me to take lisinopril, nope 1 day and tongue swelled, so she said try amlodipine, not good either, feet felt like lead bricks. I ended up in ER with anxiety attack (never had this before) and I said NO to BP meds. What happened is I tried to flush the drug out of my body with TONS of water and my sodium level bottomed out. So now that I am off all meds I pray to be done with this soon. It is 5 weeks and I am still not me back to me!

JR I am so glad to hear you are doing better. It gives me hope that these last two days are just a minor set back. Hang in there Sandra and Lauren. Prayers for all!

Yes I have headaches since stopping Metoprolol 5 weeks ago. I am dealing all the withdrawal symptoms without any meds, it is tough! I feel for all those posting on here, the anxiety was the worst, it has stopped for me after 4 weeks. Dealing with headaches and still have itchy skin. Hang tough and get through this poison!

I'm feeling okay. I am feeling slightly better but still getting lightheaded if I clean house or walk to much. I can get up now tho which is improvement. Anxiety still there. Yesterday I had to drive out of town and got caught in a storm and my heart rate had to be 200 from being so anxious. Anyone still getting lightheaded and fast heartrate after 3 months off?

I switched from Metoprolol cold turkey to a calcium channel blocker because I had every side effect in the literature. It is hell, anxiety, helpless feeling, jittery, but I am riding it out. Heart rate is ok, a tad high, and having a wrist cuff to monitor progress helps. If you are going to taper off of a BB like Metoprolol, be advised, it is not easy. Knowing that it is going to be rough and riding the wave and being mentally prepared for it, helps. Don't rely on physicians for a complete knowledge base. I have learned the hard way that only you know your physiology.... use physicians as a navigator, not your pilot.

JR-i was literally on a sliver when I stopped. Its still affecting me unfornutely. I was on 12.5 for 1 1/2 years then got down to a sliver when I stopped. Crazy that its still bothering me.

Allison- if you were on 12.5 mgs you might have it easier than most of us . They had me on 200mgs for 10 months. But the most common things are lightheadedness , anxiety, palpitations, tremors in the beginning and others but your on a realy low dose so you may experience alot less than alot of us

I still have fast heart rate . Just this morning it happened and the anxiety went up . But its slowly getting better . I think we get more alarmed because we are expecting to bet better by now but seems like it may take longer than we thought. I also quit taking lexapro a week ago

Oh for sure Sandra....my heart rate does that also but if you keep track you will see it just drops a bit more every one or 2 weeks if you continue to push yourself. I think it's our hearts trying to just readjust. I'm willing to bet that a few months ago you weren't even able to think about helping with yard work? Mine still raises here and there but I know it's gonna get better.
