Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 54)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

My EKGs have been good, just high BP and HR with some nausea and headache....and a general feeling of being tired...with spurts of anxiety.

They put me on a calcium channel blocker Cardizem. I started sleeping poorly, had anxiety and depression and when I could not sleep last night, I am off after 10 days of 120mg ER, so they felt I needed something else. I am on losartan 100 mg.

The Cardizem dropped the HR but my BP actually rose as I added weight, probably fluid retention. But I had insanely high anxiety on M towards the end of my twenty years and I had to get off.....and I do not want to risk another beta blocker now that the adrenalin has been unleashed. I need to get off as many meds as I can.

Hello Matt and yes I don't blame you for being cautious of beginning something new,Why does he want to start you on another heart pill anyway if you have no heart issues, and if you have blood pressure issues there are other pills that' aren't in the beta blocker family

My cardiologist just suggested I take cardevilol....I am worried about having the same overwhelming anxiety I had on metoprolol....should I start this or just wait out the withdrawal....please help...I was going insane on the metoprolol and I fear the same with any beta blocker....I am on Day 44 off M. They said that cardevilol is a selective beta blocker where metoprolol is a complete beta blocker. But if you go crazy overly anxious on one why wouldn't you go crazy on another?

Help!!!!!

CJ stomach upset is what?

Nausea or pain or acid reflux???

Is headache one of your symptoms and a warm flushed feeling at the top of your head, from the forehead up? Exactly where your brain is.

Sure, shortness of breath, very tired and larthargec, anxiety, malaise, stomach upset, pounding heart and just feel like crap. As time goes on the symptoms have morphed so what I experienced 2 months ago are a little different than now. I am at about 4 weeks of feeling normal and about 2-3 bad days, then the cycle starts over again. the good news is the normal periods are getting longer and the bad days shorter. Hang in there it will get better!

Norma, I was on it for 1 1/2 years at the smallest dose. We're still having shortness of breath long after being off?

Sandra the shortness of breath and tightness were awful for me, I thought I was going to die. How long were you on the M? I think that plays a big roll! How you have relief soon

Anyone still have a little chest tightness or shortness of breath after 7 months off? Tried to make an appointment with the doc today but they say if I have shortness of breath to go to the ER. But I've had this since I got on the beta well over 2 years ago so I'm not going to the ER. Doc won't even see me!

Thanks for the encouragement, CJ.

How long were you on M?

I am reading that it varies by length of time on the drug, amount of the drug you were taking and how well you metabolize drugs.

It is just so difficult seeing all this time pass, the weaning, the withdrawal period, etc.

Did you see improvement in stages or was it a little better every day.

I wish there was an easy way to cure this but unfortunately it is time that is the only fix. I remember reading from previous posts people saying it took them 8-12 months to finally feel normal and I thought if it takes that long I will never make it. I am now at 8 months off and finally feeling a little like my old self. the good stretches are getting longer and the bad days shorter. My prayers are with you all and take it one day at a time it does get better.

I was told I had anemia but have since gotten that taken care of. Thyroid has been checked. Everything seems ok. I am thinking of getting hormones checked since I have constant hot flashes too. It is likely it's something else but no one can find it!! I was on it for 1 1/2 years at a very small dose.

I am a little over 7 months off. Having more bad days than good now. I'm almost constantly light headedness and have been recently having heart palpitations. My sensitivity to any medicine is now so severe that I can't even take a vitamin. The beta blocker messed up my body. Bad. I am slipping into a deep depression and in denial that after all these months it's still the beta blocker. Every day I think I'm going to die and that there's somethinges very wrong with me. So frustrated.

It is Matt, Monique, somehow the letters got lopped off.

Yes, it was a dream and I woke up with my heart racing. I started on Cardizem 120 last week, but that does not seem to helping much. I am retired so I do not have to work, but this is worse and much longer than Anything I have experienced in my almost 70 years and I have had eight major operations and battled depression from chronic sciatic pain all my life.

I feel weak, chilled at times, nausea is always lurking. My sleep is sporadic and I never feel rested. My only relief is decaf green tea, which sometimes relieves nausea. I have cut out soda and coffee as many have suggested on this board. I have always been able to exercise my stress away, but now without, the littlest thing can stress me out.

Tomorrow comes a barium test to see if my cyst in my esophagus is blocking food and water. IF so, I have to have it removed endoscopically. I am not looking forward to another operation and stay in the hospital because they might just decide to give me a beta blocker and I would despise that.

Be well

Hello Ma,sorry to hear about all your troubles and yes I've also experienced same things,I'm almost at 3 months off now and so far since Saturday it's been ok,asides from when I first wake up and get out the bed I find my heart right slightly higher like 110-118 but goes back down shortly,it's been a long road for all of us,and when u were waking up palpitations were u having a dream, that' use to happen to me too?

Day 41, getting very discouraged in that I thought I would be having some improvement by now.

When the blood pressure is up, the heart rate is better, and vice versa.

I was woken up twice last night by palpitations and afraid to sleep during the day.

I feel as if I have missed the last 4 months of my life, the summer is over and I am afraid to move much except for trips to the doctor or hospital.

I also feel as if The medical profession has let me down. When they do not have an answer, they think a trip to a psychiatrist is the next step....it is all in your head.
I have had a triple bypass, but I could feel myself getting better and stronger with each passing day, the same with a hip replacement, but with this, it is the same every day...very monotonous and very scary.

I take my blood pressure and the diastolic is in a good, tight range, while the systolic is all over the place, depending on whether I am sitting or lying and it gets so high sometimes.

I hope others are doing better.

Well, I'd just like to say "you're welcome" for all the thanks here, but there was a time when I was pretty freaked out about my situation without knowing where to turn. It literally felt like hell on earth. If you look back to May of 2015, you'll see what I'm talking about. This was the only active website I found where I could find some realistic answers to my ailments, and I'm more than thankful to those along the way who gave me the help and support I received when I needed it the most. They're the ones that deserve all the credit, in my honest opinion. I still do, however, like to check in here on occasion just to see how everyone is doing, for if I can give anybody any help or advice or whatever, I'm more than happy to do so.
