Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 17)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I've been weening off Metoprolol for about a month now. I went to 75% of original dose for about 3 weeks. During that time the only real withdrawal I noticed was mildly rapid heart rate at times and a whooshing sound in my ears, and perhaps some irritability. When those side effects stopped I stepped it down another 25%, so now I am at 50% original dose. The uncomfortable withdrawal effects aren't as bad this drop as they were the first. I am taking my time, not sure how long it will take to fully recover, but looking forward to being off!

well I have been off the (M) for two months now and I am still waking up with palpitations on and off.. Cant sleep and trying to figure out if something is triggering this? Now I feel as if wow maybe I have something wrong with me but I know a doctor will only prescribe more drugs or whatever.. But at least the palps go down rather quickly but then the heart rate remains a bit elevated .. I drink sea salt in water and taking all kinds of supplements for the heart.. Taurine, Magnesium, L theanine, Olive Leaf, L carnitine, hawthorne,.. I am trying to have a life but when I do the side effects return.... Its very frustrating although I have to believe I am getter better. maybe I have lost patience.. Its been a year of weaning and two months off and although there is progress Its still frustrating... I also do energy healing work and meditations.. getting very tired of it all. I keep wondering if its this drug or something else I am missing... I so want to exercise and walk but still afraid although I try and do a bit of something when I feel okay.... I am also having stomach issues which who knows if its the drug or something new? thank you

Bee, I'd give excersize a try. During my withdrawal period, excersize would give me 1-2 hours of relief afterwards. I would start with walking. Once, I got chased by a wasp and ran like crazy home. My heart rate went up like never before. Unexpectedly, I felt so good afterwards. My cardiologist said vigorous excersize helps.

BEE: are you doing anything to heal your gut? Take some probiotics. I was having some major stomach issues and severe anxiety and started taking Diatemaceous Earth and apple cider vinegar and my stomach healed very quickly.
I am now down to 25% of the original dose of Metoprolol and eager to be done, but taking it slow. I am sleeping better, and am actually quite fatigued but I am just assuming it will take time for my body to readjust. I didn't have palpitations with this drop, I'll post results again after I drop the final 25% down to zero.

Hi
Yes I am drinking apple cidar vinegar and dandelion tea and chanca piedra herbal tea for the gut and expelling stones and drinking beet root .. I also drink lemons .. I haven't done the milk thistle but I used to take probiotics but haven't done that in awhile. I just don't want to take too many things ... I believe my gut is getting cleaned out but it seems as if it takes awhile... but will look again into the probiotics.

I will start walking again Joyce.......I am just so afraid of my heart rate going bonkers as it still does at times for no reason at all. I could just be sitting around and it goes up for no reason and then I am very uncomfortable and cant sleep even with taking the L theanine and magnesium and Hawthorn.. I have a really good resting heart rate so when it goes up just sitting it is very uncomfortable and it is hard to get it down.... Oh; and I also drink a lot of water...

thank you ..

Hi again.
I also wanted to say that I was walking a lot for about two years.. Atleast 2 miles a day but I had to stop back last Sept. due to all of these side effects.. I will now resume again..
I also have a pretty good diet.. I had lost 35lb. but put some back on.. trying to get rid of ten now.......I am 60 years old and have been a vegetarian for 15 years. No red meat or even chicken or turkey as I don't really like those things. I usually stick with veggies, eggplant, some pasta, quinoa, egg whites, sometimes eggs, Beans, chilli, salads, oatmeal, veggie burgers, etc.etc. I do eat fish and of course I do cheat but not a lot.. I don't eat junk food, processed food or fast food.. and yes I do cheat but its with no salt taco chips .. I do eat some dairy but not a lot. No milk, some cheese and most of my food is organic.. one reason I was puzzed as to why I had high blood pressure but I am assuming I was eating too many carbs and was overweight and not walking and since I was 58 years old I figured its part of aging process. I also was having a lot of stress at that time.. I am learning to deal with the stress now although that is difficult for me.. I also feel like I do have high anxiety at times...
thank you

I watch my salt intake and stick to celtic sea salt..

thank You

Bee, where I'm from, some heart centers have a consultation where they monitor you while excersizing and can help you develop a plan. You need to know your target heart rate so you don't over do it. I monitored my heart rate when I started working out in a hospital gym. I didn't have heart issues while excersizing. Most of my heart issues happened when going or being in a resting state.

Btw Bee, I had horrible heart palpitations when sleeping. The only way I could stop it was to sleep straight on my back. I don't recall how long it took, but I don't have them anymore. One of the signs I knew I was getting better was the ability to sleep on my side. :) Congratulations on weaning off...I really hope you continue to get better each day.

Ivaliuana, congrats to you on the weaning process. Sounds like it's going well for you!

thanks Joyce.. I will def. sleep on my back .. and see how that goes..

I woke up two nights in a row with what felt like panic attacks while sleeping. heart rate went up but not too bad.... but couldn't get back to sleep.. I read something about adrenal rushes when getting off meds and eating certain foods and things. I am wondering if this stuff is having a hard time leaving my body or am I just having bad panic in my sleep? never heard of that.... I do have anxiety about some issues so I am doing the EFT tapping for that.............. could I have developed a panic disorder from this drug as I never had this before..

I notice that I stupidly drank a protein shake with stevia in it so going to stop doing that.. And on Sunday night I had some pizza and had palps. and then read that some pizza places put MSG in their pizza.. So I will be making my own pizza from now on....

Not sure about a center to go exercise.. and not sure what the cost would be.. no insurance blah blah. I so appreciate the help

Does the ACV really help with your blood pressure? I too have been taking the metoprolol 50mg, and would love to lower my dose and gradually wean off. I have tried drinking the ACV in warm lemon water but was concerned about reaction with my bp meds. I do notice palpitations some times, but not all the time. I drink alot of water and work out at 5 times a week trying to lose 10-15 lbs. My concern is the rapid heart rate that the bp meds seem to help. Has anyone tried acupuncture or acupressure?

If you try the ACV use the one that says Organic Braggs name with the "Mother' in it.. you can check for interactions online.......but I have taken ACV with water when I was on the Metoprolol.. and I don't even think I checked the interaction but do your own research.. check the internet and all before you mix certain things.. oh; and yes I do believe ACV can lower blood pressure...

Update.... well I have been off the (M) for two months now and I have no idea what I could have now? Still waking up some nights with palps when I go to bathroom and feel aweful and have pain sometimes in the body.. I do not want to go to the doctor so I am doing acupressure and still taking all of my vitamins and supplements for hbp and heart.. the palps go down but I can still feel the adrenal rush and then this aweful dreadful feeling with pain .. Could this medicine really be doing this? I am scared to find out if there is something wrong with me because what will they do ? Give me more drugs...? Oh; and I found some utube videos on kinseology for the heart and have been doing that also with some EFT tapping.

just confused as to could I still be detoxing??

thanks for listening and please don't want to heart any scary stories lol

Bee, I have news for you. It took me a year to really get to feeling better after getting off of M and it has been two years now and I still have some effects of getting off of the stuff. It is poison. I have give up that I will ever be myself again. I took it for four years and looks like it is going to take four years to get off of it

Ruby
wow thank you...............actually since I last posted I have been sleeping much better and if I wake up now I go right back to sleep without palps or anything.. but I do proceed with caution and there are snippets of the side effects but minimal.. Heck though I am taking a boatload of supplements and vitamins now.... I have also learned that some backstrap molasses, motherwort and hawthorn herbs stop racing heart and lower blood pressure too...............Its been such a nightmare for a year and two months......but I get still nervous about other side effects such as heart related things..
Many blessings!!!

Has anyone who was on Toprol 47.5 had sore muscles and joints? I asked my cardiologist if I could go off the Toprol to see if that's what it was. He said ok, so I've been off for almost a week now and was driving home tonight and had anxiety symptoms, racing heart, feeling weird, had to pull over. I also think my aches and pains have decreased a bit since being off it for only 4 days. How long will the heart racing go on for? I want to stay off it and go on to natural supps. Anyone had this happen?

I want to offer some hope to people who have been dealing with Metoprolol withdrawal. I've noticed many boards don't have any of the stories of people who have made it through! I was on it for 6 months and 1 week. It was torture from day 1! I had all of the typical symptoms while on it - extreme fatigue, headaches, muscle and joint pain, nausea, shortness of breath, and freezing cold hands and feet. When I started tapering off the drug I added a burning sensation and tingling from head to toe. It was so bad I couldn't sleep for several days. I saw a neurologist - she ruled out MS and other neurological disorders. I saw a rheumatologist - he ruled out lupus, arthritis and other autoimmune disorders. My PCP thinks it is all in my head and keeps trying to prescribe me Xanax. I am happy to report that after almost 8 weeks off of the medication the majority of my symptoms have faded. I still have some of the burning sensations in the joints in my legs, but it comes and goes, and the shortness of breath pops up every once in awhile. An ER doctor explained to me that metoprolol stores up in the liver and can take quite some time to fully flush out. I feel like I am slowly getting back to normal for the first time in quite some time. I hope others have the same experience!

Still sitting at 25% of the dose, still having palpitations and once in awhile it will skip a beat. I also noticed some very minor bloating in my legs. Not sure when to stop it altogether. Maybe ripping it off like a band aid would be best?
