Metoprolol Tartrate Side Effects

I was put on metoprolol about 3 weeks ago for hypertension and an ascending aortic aneurysm. I also have PVCs. I take 25 MG every 12 hours. My BP is better but not great. Some readings are normal and most are high (130/90-5 range) I have noticed more heart palpitations since taking it instead of less. I am having intermittent episodes of chest tightness and breathing being more labored. Also have a cough. Feels like a mild asthma attack. In the past, I would get exertional asthma with heavy exercise or laughing. My sleep is worse for waking up with a cough, palpitations, anxiety, or chest heaviness. I also have been hoarse and have a tickle in the back of my throat (postnasal drip?) Are these typical side effects? Do they warrant a reduction in my dosage? I see my cardiologist on Monday but I am afraid he won't take my concerns seriously. I don't want to be on any medication but I understand I need them now. I feel anxious most of the time when I feel like this. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Those can be normal side effects of Metoprolol, as listed by the FDA, but you should inform your cardiologist, because once that cough starts, it usually doesn't go away and can continue to get worse.

You will most likely need to switch to a different medication. This one is frequently the first choice to treat such conditions, but there are other options available.

Thanks for the reply. My cardiologist didn't seem concerned and said my lungs sound fine and the medicine I am taking shouldn't effect the lungs. I disagree. I know how I feel. I reduced my night dose to half and did a little better. No change in my pressure readings with the change. I think I will eventually try to get down to half in the morning too as long as my pressure stays well. I see my cardiac surgeon for a follow up to monitor my aneurysm in September. Hopefully he will consider my side effects more than the cardiologist did. Is the cough really permanent? ?? Should I advise my PCP?

I have been taking metoprolol tartrate 25 mg 1/2 morning and evening for 5 days. Well I've been burning in my upper back and down my chest bone. I'm also having really weird vision problems. Also I've had no appetite for 4 days and severe diarrhea. I stopped taking it this morning because the ER doctor said I should. How long will it have these side effects? I have really fast heart rate.

I started taking 50 metoproll a week ago for rapid hb and palpatarions my heartbeat is doing well at around 60 bpm but I still have a few palpatations every day, is this normal.?

I stopped taking Metoprolol Tart when I started to itch all over my torso & arms. I took it for 4 weeks, the itching started after one week, but at first I didn't associate the itching with the drug, after some elimination of all other things, that was the only thing different. I looked up the side effects and there it was, "itching". I am still itching after nearly 4 months since I stopped taking it. I told my doctor that I wasn't going to take it any more, and went back onto my previous BP medication which works just fine. I have a small Aortic Valve leakage which is causing a slight arythmia of my heart. I will take my chances, I am just over 80 years old so am not worrying about my heart, but the itching drives me crazy at times. My doctor says it may take 6 months to go away, but I don't think she really knows.
