Metoprolol & Hair Loss (Page 4) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking 200 mg. a day for about 4 years. I thought it was a coincidence that I've lost 50% of my hair during this time because I am also going through menopause. I just found out that it is possible the hair loss is caused by metoprolol, so my doctor just wrote me a RX for a different drug. Will my hair grow back? It was very long, down to my waist, but I've been cutting it to compensate for the thinness. I just touch my head and lose a few hairs! Any ideas?

Wow! I have been taking the Metoprolol Succinate for about 7 years now. I was becoming alarmed because I noticed so many long strands of hair in the sink when I would comb it out after shampooing. Thought maybe it was just age related, or maybe from another medication. Now it all makes sense after reading these many posts. When I mentioned it to my dr he put me on a high dose of vitamin D once a week, said that was probably reason for hair loss. Not much difference, I still am losing a lot of hair when I wash or brush it. I will definitely mention this to him and see if I can take something else for rapid pulse and high BP!

Metoprolol is a Beta Blocker. Ace Inhibitors are another family I believe. Just sharing. I also have been having hair loss mentioned by others and Metoprolol is the only medication I take. Has to be it!!

Hi my dermatologist prescribed me a
topical oil which is a scalp oil that I use twice a day on my patchy spots.
I am also taking antibiotics once a day and I am using a prescribed shampoo once a week.
Just recently she also told me to use men's Rogaine foam 5% which will help your hair growth much quicker. I placed it on the patchy spots and I'm noticing significant hair growth with everything I am using.
Hope this helps!

Good Morning DJS, no worries.
I do not think I told you the name of my prescription that I'm taking.
Derma-smoothe is a scalp oil topical that I rub into my scalp twice a day.
I use a shampoo name Clobetasol once a week.
And I take an antibiotic pill every day.
Ask your dermatologist about it.
Hope this helps.

I've been on Rthymol sr (propafenone) 325mg 2x daily...for three years now. I am in my mid sixties. I have PAF (paroxysmal / lone AFib. Only my first episode ever eas debilitating...a few during the three years since which have not been. I started losing my hair about six weeks into starting it. I have lost close to 75% if my hair. All this time I was pretty much told it was my hypothyroid imbalance. Which is actually in a good range but the hair loss continues. After doing my own research...I come to learn that Rythmol has beta blocker properties which explains s the hair loss. I have started using a laser comb and taking Biotin....too early to see results. Now that I know what is causing my hair loss I am ready to take control. Will be seeing a new doctor and I plan on getting a reduce dose. I have felt from the beginning that my dose is too high. I hate drugs and so want off this train. I know my triggers...sleep deprivation, stress, anxiety. My diet is impeccable...I stay away from processed chemical foods....MSG and it's proxy names....are nanotubes triggers for arrythmias. I am a lavto-ovo vegetarian and most days full vegetarian. I'm depressed over this hair loss, fed up with the ears ringing and buzzing, the crazy dreams and in the last two years have aged rapidly...my face looks emaciated. My weight average is 130. There is a noticeable difference in my skin overall. These side effects have caused me anxiety and the concern for what this drug had done to my white bl ct and over all health. Oh and here's the kicker....early on when I asked the cardio doctor if it was safe to continue with all my supplements with the Rythmol ...she said, "if you're concerned don't take them." Red Flag! I immediately made an appointment with a Holistic medical doctor. He recommended supplements that you would expect a Cardiologist to recommend. Needed to vent...thanks for this forum.

I wish I had a good doctor like you seem to have! He followed your case. My doctor said my hair loss was due to obesity!

While you're at it Tonyia, you should also get a thyroid function blood test. An overactive thyroid can also cause hair loss, along with many other symptoms. If you are either thin or overweight, thyroids can cause that, and women are way more suspectible to thyroid problems than men are. I also read that women in the midwest, especially the Chicago area, have higher incidences of thyroid problems. (And no one has figured out why yet.) Good luck to you!

yes Lisinopril caused me severe hair loss. I was ok on 10mg but it wasn't reducing my blood pressure so the doctor pushed me up to 40 mg. I had large bald spots (3) int two months. Metoprolol 25mg also caused severe hir loss

Thanks, I have had multiple thryroid tests so I think that I am ok but am now on a lower dose of Lisinopril which doesn't sound much better, and am still having hair loss also.. . I have now started taking Protandim and will continue to monitor my results since it may help me altogether with the bp and getting rid of all of the meds. I know that many others are struggling with this stuff so I will try to remember to come back and post my results in a few months:) I am very hopeful as my bp is the "heriditary" kind because they cold never find an actual cause and I have had it since I was 23 and am now 36. (and it was stroke level when it "popped up"). Good luck to you all!!

I just re-read my old posts on this subject, along with all the new ones. I feel so bad for all of you who have hair loss due to these blood pressure/heart medicines. Both Metoprolol and Lisinopril cause hair loss to some degree or another. You all are so young to be going through this--and still none of us know what to do to regrow our hair!

We can't stop taking medications without risking stroke and/or death. Having beautiful hair again is not worth risking our lives. I hope you all agree with that.

I keep hoping someone will post a solution! or find a doctor who figures out an alternative medication that won't make hair thin and fall out. IF anyone does, please announce his name and what the solution is!

Even on a low 10mg. dose of Lisinopril, my hair is still thinning, only at a slower rate. New hairs grow about 2-3" and then fall out. I take lots of vitamins, use gentle shampoo and rarely take a brush to my hair.

I must mention that I also have thyroid disease, but supposedly it is under control with meds.

April...some one posted that BIOTIN, a supplement, helped, I I think it does too...I experienced some regrowth when I was taking it but I ran out and never got anymore...of course at the time I didn't realize it might have been because of the biotin that I got the regrowth. I am now starting to take it and have changed my bp med, so hopefully I will start seeing no more loss and with any luck, will see new growth. I will try to keep posting as there is progress!!
