Metoprolol For Light Headedness, Dizzy Spells Low Blood Pressure?

Hi,

Last Christmas 12/2012 i fainted in a store and went to my GP because well fainting in a store. After ordering some tests thyroid panel (normal), sugar test (not diabetic), cholesterol (less than 150). He sent me to a cardiologist after seeing something slightly off kilter (something on the left axis?) The cardiologist said it was within normal but did prescribe Metoprolol 25mg tartrate 2x a day. He also said to eat a bag of chips on occasion, increase my salt intake and drink caffiene.

My questions are:

1. is it normal to prescribe it to a person with low blood pressure Nov 28, 2012 it was 114/99 (i had a cold when this was taken) to 113/59 on Mar 23, 2013.

2. why would he prescribe this when it is normally used for people with high blood pressure?

3. Is it ok to take with multivitamins, glucosamine (joint stuff) and fishoil?

A little more about myself, i'm 5'4" and 34 years old, i run 2 miles a day, non smoker, don't drink. I do get dizzy spells from changing position like lying on my stomach to standing or from just getting up from a chair.

Metoprolol is a beta blocker and these medications actually have more than one medical use, they don't just lower blood pressure. By their very nature, they have an effect on circulation and cardiac function. Thus, if he the cardiologist thought he saw something odd, even though it was within normal limits, it was prescribed as a protection factor for your cardiac health.

And yes, it is okay to take with those supplements, as a matter of fact, most cardiac specialists encourage their patients to add such supplements to improve their overall health and quality of life.

Since the doctor recommended you increase your sodium intake and drink caffeine, it's possible that he thinks your dizzy spells and fainting were due to low blood pressure. So, he's trying to get you to balance that back out, while still being able to take the medication for its protective factor.

The dizzy spells when changing position like that is called orthostatic hypotension and, in most cases, it's caused by the fluid volume in your body being too low, which causes your blood pressure to drop suddenly, when you move quickly.

You can help lessen that by moving slower when changing positions.

Additionally, since it may be due to a low fluid volume, which would also explain your sodium being low, you can try to increase your fluid intake each day. That would actually be better and safer solution than just increasing your sodium. (As long as your doctor hasn't given you a reason to restrict your fluid intake!)

You said you run 2 miles a day, so it would be very easy for you to get dehydrated if you aren't taking in enough fluids.

How much liquid do you drink daily?

Normally, everyone should take in at least 64ounces, with more added if you're very active, or the weather is very hot and dry.
