Metoprolol For Bp, Added Lisinopril, Want 2 Reduce Metoprolol (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi, I am a 56 year old male in fairly good shape, prob 20 lbs overweight. I've been walking and biking lately trying to get healthier... i had bp slowly creeping up over the years..finally doc convinced me to start 25 mg Metoprolol er about 4 years ago ...didnt help bp...he said Metoprolol is not the best bp med but i was a bit anxious. he thought it would help both things. bp still 2 high so he changed to 50 mg about 3 years ago. bp even worse...doc retired. went to new doc 2 years ago he added 20 mg lisinopril and bp perfect ever since. now here is the twist...well on just Metoprolol i was having racing heart...for ex wake up from nightmare heart racing FAST...have to pace about for like 20 min....drink soda, finally burp and heart back to normal...i was always taking pulse always spiking...would have to focus to keep it down....once on lisinopril....NEVER have the racing heart again. now my new doc ...i asked could i cut back on Metoprolol...i am always tired TIRED....hair thinner, no energy, affects lots of things!....she said yes cut back to 25 mg even go down to 12.5. my question to you wise folks...is my bp good now due to lisinopril..or is it a combination of the 2 drugs i am on..if i cut back on Metoprolol will it go up? my heart never races now ...is that from the bp being normal and lisinopril, or combination?? i am a body aware, kinda anxious guy...doc said cut from 50 to 25... pharmacist said prob be ok...i called old doc at home today!!! and he said i will prob notice difference being body aware but i will be ok. all of this cutting back on Metoprolol is my idea.... cause i am so tired...i hate to mess things up just cause i want to cut back on this ...oh and pulse is always so slow now...was 54 when i check earlier...too slow i think.... i guess i wonder, when they added lisinopril why didn't he tell me to cut back or get off Metoprolol?? Will i be ok going from 50 to 25 mg?? Do you think i should just keep things the way they are or is it smart to want to cut back on Metoprolol?? I used to have so much energy now i never want to do anything...exhausted all the time...i wake up thinking i am so tired.. numb hands, aching joints, sleep like crap, etc.....thanks for any and all ideas...

Hello, Nyalan! How are you?
Generally, when lowering or discontinuing a blood pressure medication, you will experience a rebound effect, which can include some elevated blood pressure and heart rate. However, the Lisinopril should keep it from going to any dangerous levels. After that, you'll need to give it a little time to see where it levels back out, on just the Lisinopril. That's the only way to get an answer to your other question on whether it's at good levels due to the combo, or solely from the Lisinopril.
Typical side effects to the Linsinopril, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, hypotension and increased urination.
He didn't tell you to cut back, because at that point, he likely didn't want you to discontinue the Metoprolol. It is very common to prescribe multiple medications to get someone's blood pressure under control, then cut back later, once it's at normal levels.
When I first had congestive heart failure years ago, I was taking 7 of them, but have gradually been able to reduce to the point where I now only take 2.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Hi. thanks so much for writing. I am trying to exercise every day now...walked for 50 minutes tonight, I did cut back to 3/4 of a pill today and feel fine....bp was 115/77 and pulse is now 64...maybe my imagination but i wasnt as tired today, no nap! thanks again for helping me.
