Metoprolol Tart 25mg - Mylan (Page 2)

Updated

I took Metoprolol Tart for 2 months, June - July 09 and my heart rate dropped drastically, admitted to hospital with chest pains, breathing difficulty, dizziness, disoriented, head ache, suicidal/homicidal thoughts, heart rate was 32 bpm. Doctor said it was metoprolol and took me off it (was told later should never go off cold turkey) and my heart rate got up above 50. I continued to have problems (have had high bp 140-160 over 80 for several years) tightness in chest, chest pains, persistant dry cough, dizziness, suicidal/homicidal thoughts, headaches, was referred to a pulmonary doctor and then another and was told I developed severe asthma from the beta blocker, also restrictive lung disease, neither have a cure and I continue to have chest pain and dizziness and dry cough and headaches, feeling out of breath. When I took the pills they were pink and now they are white from what the pharmacist told me the pills I was taking were voluntarily recalled and (that means they don't report to the FDA) then changed to the new white pills. I have been hospitalized again for chest pain and my heart checked out throughly and seems no heart problems but all lung problem. I still have high blood pressure but now only take lasic and potassium. I now have to take daily inhalers/breathing treatments. I use to enjoy hiking, fossil hunting, rock hounding, tennis, jogging and am now only able to walk about 500 feet without being out of breath. I also get horrible pains in my upper thighs and feel fatigued all the time. This sucks and the drug companies just consider us collateral damage.. They don't want to compensate for medical or pain or suffering. Attorneys won't take the claim for one reason or the other, it just makes me angry. I don't know if I'll ever be more well or if I will be dead in the next couple of years but I'm not going to give up without a fight. This drug does more harm than good and needs to be taken off the market!

I was hospitalized and the doctor took me off the medication, I DID NOT stop taking it on my own, the Cardiologist took me off it immediately, they should have known the risk, and taken me off it slowly. The pulmologist said the Asthma/Lung disease was caused from the drug, and there is no cure for either.

Now, I have read your case several of times and discuss it with my colleagues. I am going to be direct and not sugar coating anything, just being honest. You have place yourself in jeopardy by abruptly discontinue your medication. In any legal case no matter who it is, the plaintiff (you) will have to absorb some responsibility in the wrongdoing that occurred. You did not follow the correct protocol of decreasing the medication in a safely manner for termination. Instead of, you call the physician/s reporting your side effects and wanting to be discharge from the medication as soon as possible. The physician would have given the appropriate instructions for eliminating the medication safely. The physician will discuss your progress during the reduction of medication and to discover another medication w/less side effects and tolerable. Therefore, you have made it difficult for a lawyer to pursue a case against the manufactory of the medication because of your negligence and the assign fault for you would be 50-60% without looking your health records.
It’s unfortunate, a manufactory produce a medication to do something good but the side effects could produce other undesirable effects. Sometimes, the medical practitioners know there are nasty side effects of a medication but the medication is great to use for this type of disorder/s. They weigh out the greater good over a few side effects, those patients do not ask questions or do not inquire about their medication, and health will never know what hit them when it happens.
Now, is it possible those signs and symptoms are from the medication, yes? Everyone is effective differently. If you had taken great notes, follow the protocol of terminating the medication, correctly and been truly a part of your health team. Those lawyers would be knocking down your door.
What you can learn from this lesson incident? A. Keep fighting and something may link everything together. B. Be an active voice in your health care. C. Gather your health records and read them. Ask questions of the information you do not understand. D. In our society, vast amount of resources are available for the public to learn about the medical conditions, medications, tests, treatments, etc. E. Have all your medical practitioners meet each other and you at least twice a year if no disorders, illnesses, injuries. This time can be use to introduce everyone, the importance of communication between them and you, working as a team not individually and everyone is aware of each other’s goal. This gives you time to evaluate their willingness of working together and meeting your needs. Kick him or her off the team and find a replace if one does not meet your standards. F. Become a medical writer about your case and be prepare with your information for these meeting (if not, they will walk on top of you).G. Learn and understand medicine is a science and it is a hit or miss or try this and that. No one can give anyone a 100% result because it is impossible and a person can say, this medication has been successful with this illness or disorder and injury, which the research studies have revealed the success rate. If you think the physician/medical practitioners are bull crapping than ask them for ten articles to take home with you. You will be happy to wait and
sometimes ask to keep them on their toes. If you are not a writer, ask if you could use your tape recorder and have them sign your permission slip and let them make a copy for the record.

Always on every visit get a copy of your health records. It will be much easier now since it is on an electronical disc. You need the visitation notes.

Remember tell the doctor every side effect to feeling great.

Research every medication and illiness.

Seek out specialist who will speak to you in general not specific to your case. You can ask questions could it be possible these type of side effect could be seen and why?

Do not blindside a physician or anyone into a sucker punch then you will be knock out and no one will work with you.

yes reported to both the manufacturer and FDA, didn't have these issues before this drug and I'll not give up trying to get someone to take notice. There are too many people reporting problems, including death after use of this drug. I may never get someone to take my claim, but I'll still continue to voice my situation. Not everyone reacts to the same medications the same way, and I understand it will be difficult, but its very difficult living the way I am now. I'm exhausted, can't even laugh anymore without going into an asthmatic attack. Can't play with my grandchildren the way I want. Can't make love to my husband. It's not right and someone needs to take notice! If enough people come forward, contact the FDA and the manufacturer surely the will at least reevaluate this medication.

The reason that attorneys will not take the case is because with such a short duration of use and your symptoms, it is difficult to definitively tie it directly to the medication.

Most people don't suffer permanent ill effects after using a medication for such a short period of time, unless they suffered anaphylactic shock and organ failure.

While a doctor may have said you developed asthma from it, if there is no proof, then you don't have a leg to stand on for any type of claim or lawsuit.

Metoprolol isn't known to cause those types of conditions on a permanent basis. Rarely, there are times it can cause lowered heart rate, breathing difficulties and other issues as side effects, but they are usually solved by lowering the dosage or discontinuing the medication.

And yes, abruptly stopping it can cause rebound effects, such as elevated blood pressure and faster heart rate.

I am sorry to read of what has happened to you, but unfortunately, unless you have some way to prove that everything your experiencing was a direct result of using this medication, then there isn't much you can do.

Did you report your experience to the FDA and the manufacturer?

I have used Metoprolol myself and experienced some of the same issues, however, they all resolved themselves with discontinuation of the medication.

I now take Carvedilol, at the highest daily dose and have no problems with it.
