Metoprolol: Do The Side Effects Improve Eventually? (Top voted first)
UpdatedI started Metoprolol this Monday after the cardiologist prescribed it because of being in the ER with extremely fast heartbeats. After a heart ultrasound, chest xray, blood tests, and wearing a holter moniter, they found there was nothing wrong with my actual heart other than the fact that I have a mild heart arrhythmia which they believe was brought out by a virus I also had. Now that I have started the medicine, I have had dizziness, nausea, sever mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety. The cardiologists' nurse said these were all normal, but it seems a little excessive to me. I am on the lowest possible dose (25MG) minus the possibility of cutting the pill in half and I take it once a day. I do not have high blood pressure and am young and not overweight (5ft and 105lbs). Has anyone else had all these side effects, do they go away?
i have been taking metoporol for over two months and my legs and feet are severly swollen stopped the med two days ago how long before symptoms disappear?
I also stopped the medicine after the hospital gave it to me because of my heart beating too fast. Took it for about 2 weeks then stopped. Idk if this is a side effect but my chest area where my heart is pains sometimes along side my back.
I was recenlty in the hospitsal for a fast heartbeat....they prescribed me metoprolol also and since talking it I have just not been right....all the things you said plus loss of appetite along with no interest in things I usually enjoy. Not sure its the medicine but sure seems like it.
My heart doctor took me off metoprolol yesterday. How long does it take for the side effects to finally leave your system. Cough and breathing problems in addition to other things.
Stopped taking metoprolol succ 25mg slow release. How long before I should see some improvement? The cardiologist stopped without weaning. Could there be side effects for stopping abruptly. Having horrible pains and discomfort in body.
I went to the emergency room to shortness of breath and fast heartbeat. The cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol 25g. I got dizzy loss appetite the rate got faster..
I got off the medication and prayed God healed me! the medication is dangerous
I started back at the gym for cardio exercise, that's the best way to treat it.
I was put on Metoporol due to an irregular heart beat and slightly elevated bp...after taking it for. 5days I stopped taking it...the side effects were HORRIBLE ...so far it's been 36 hours and the withdrawals aren't as bad...I'm mad that I even started it...my advice go the natural way and lower your bp and heart rate..
I was on Metoprolol 25mg for 4 yrs. I didn't notice anything different at the beginning of taking this medication, besides educing my palpatations. I had numerous test done and my cardiologist could find nothing wrong besides PVCs. In the last year of taking it my heart rate was always below 60 I had vertigo all the time!! Numbness in my hands, anxiety so severe I thought I was losing my mind!! I found a new cardiologist who had me stop cold turkey and within 3 days all of those symptoms have disappeared!! Now the side effects of stopping are not to good either. I first had a rapid heart rate and more PVCs, it's been a month now but I'm starting to feel better. Metoprolol is a horrible medication and I wouldn't recommend it to any one!!
I sure agree with you on this. I took it for two days and got off. The side effects were really bad!! Severe stomach bloating, chest pains, depressed mood, etc......
This medication has changed my life for the better. Just because your body didn't agree with it doesn't make it "horrible" or that it "should be taken off the market". I used to have very high heart rate (tachycardia) even when resting and after going on metoprolol I now have normal heart rate. I've been on it for 9 years now and have no side effects. So see, just because it didn't work for you or caused you side effects doesn't mean the drug should be taken off the market.
I stopped it a week ago due to terrible dizziness. I'm not right yet. I hope it doesn't take months to get better. I feel like a zombie.
Two weeks on 50 mg Metoprolol and I feel dizzy upon waking from sleep, lightheaded, concentration problems. Pulse markedly lowered, but high blood pressure barely improved. Still at 140 to 160 / 85 to 90. Misery without the benefits. I will find other BP treatment as pharmaceuticals are a joke!
Those are all normal side effects that Metoprolol can cause and they will usually last approximately 4 to 6 weeks, while your body adjusts to the medication. After that, they should start to taper off in severity.
If they don't, then you should make sure to let your doctor know, so that you can try other treatment options.

No they didn't go away. I'm changing meds I have to work can't work with these
I'm 25 years old, prescribed Metropolol do too fast heart rate. Started at 25mg now at 100mg. The cardiologists have done tests and have found nothing wrong. Still experiencing fast heart rate and palpitations.
I know this post is several years old, but I am SOOOO happy to have found this. This is me exactly. Had superfast heartbeats (diagnosed with SVT - Supraventricular Tachycardia) after a bout with the flu. Caridologist found nothing wrong after EKG and Echo and put me on Metoprolol XL - 25 mg. I am super sensitive to meds and ended up cutting it in half. Been on it for almost a week and I just feel weird - very tired: mornings are the worse - and my anxiety is higher than usual. I hope it eases after a couple of weeks.
I recently had a severe bout of vertigo and spent some time in the hospital. When i came home they prescribed Metoprolol tart 25 mg. I started having severe vision problems. When I would read all the letters became jumbled. At first I thought it was a result of my vertigo, then tonight I took another Metroplol and finally made the connection. They say not to stop this medicine suddenly, but I can't see myself taking any more of it. I am going to call my doctor in the morning. As I write this I have to close my left eye to make sense of the keyboard.
