What are the possible side effects of taking Metformin?

I am suffering from diabetes. I take Glycomet GP1, one tab morning and one at evening. My sugar level mentain120 in fasting and 150 after food. Should I continue this or add some thing ? I usually take 2 to 3 peg whisky twice in a week, I want to know the side effect of lequor on this drug .
