Metformin Hcl 500 Mg Side Effects (Top voted first)
UpdatedCan I use Metformin for weight reduction? I wanted to know about the side effects of Metformin...
hi,
does metformin increase the amount of some kind of hormones the ovary secretes? i'm taking the medicine for half a month now. ultrasound shows i have polycystic ovaries- probably the cause why i have very little amount of bleeding during menstruation.
it seems my metabolism increases. i am having loose bowel movement twice a day everyday- well, almost everyday. is this normal? should i worry?
is acne a side effect of the medicine too?
thanks!
I take Metformin ER 500mg each day. I get my drug on a 90 day program from Walmart. I have noticed that nearly every day on this last prescription there is at least one undissolved tablet in my stool. Also I have noted that when I test my sugar level that it has been all over the place, and before it held pretty close to the same numbers and if it was high I could generally figure out why, because I keep a pretty good food journal. Also my last A1C test jumped from 6.5 to 7.3. Should these tablets be coming through my system undissolved? It is nearly time to have the prescription refilled, and also in another month I will have another A1C test. I will be talking with my MD about this next month.
I take Meformin hcl 500 mg 2 times daily...my blood sugar levels are great...my last A1c was 7..before was 8.4...am thrilled that came down that much...as to loose stools well I have them occassionaly...but I no longer have to take Miralax to have bowel movement!!!! my bowels move regularly and are soft without laxative. Gas, bloating, really bad loose stools were a problem at first but my body has adjusted and side effects are really slowing down...also losing weight slowly...much needed!!!! I also take Lantus insulin and Novolin R daily but have cut my intake almost in half after going on the Metaformin....I have been on it since November 2014....am well pleased with the results.....have to watch for low sugar and have bottomed a couple times....I hope this helps you out...be patient and give your body time to adjust...
I just started Metformin HCL ER 500mg 2 times a day two days ago. I have been experiencing cramps, nausea, diarea, fatigue, excesive sleeping and foggyness. Is this common and when should this start resolving.
I am suppose to take 3 times a dy is this normal? Or does it seem a bit much?
Was prescribed Metformin HCL ER 750 mg. and Atorvastatin 20 mg. two weeks ago for high cholesterol and am about 20 pounds overweight. I am disabled with many anatomical problems due to MVA which already make walking, physical activity difficult and am on pain medication for many years now. I'm having gastrointestinal bloating, increased bowel movement, gas, and increased pain in shoulder, neck and ankles making it very hard to move around. Have also noticed vision problems all since taking these meds. How do I know which one is causing problems or is it both? My Doctor just said to stop taking the statin and we will try something else.
I wouldn't count on using an anti-diabetic drug for weight loss. Your best bet is a healthy change in eating habits and regular exercise. A pill won't lose the weight for you. Sorry to sound blunt, but it would be ignorant to think otherwise.
As far as side effects go...the most common adverse effect of metformin is gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and increased flatulence; metformin is more commonly associated with gastrointestinal side-effects than most other anti-diabetic drugs. The most serious potential side-effect of metformin use is lactic acidosis; this complication is very rare, and the vast majority of these cases seem to be related to comorbid conditions such as impaired liver or kidney function, rather than to the metformin itself.
Metformin has also been reported to decrease the blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone in patients with hypothyroidism, and, in men, lutenizing hormone and testosterone. The clinical significance of these changes is still unknown.

Will metformin 500 mg have an effect with a Positive or negative drug. Test, like for a job
No.
Sometimes Metformin is used to assist with weight loss but mostly with people who have a strong history of diabetes or who are insulin resistant. Metformin sometimes assists our body to function the way it should. some how it seems to be having positive affects on womens health by regulating periods and sometimes helping to increase there fertility. many women with PCOS are using this medication as it helps reg their cycle, relieve pms and lose weight all big factors that help to increase fertility.
I have gone for a sugar test and my sugar level has gone up to 17.5. My doctor has now recommend to take metformin tablet before breakfast and dinner. Will it do something good to my fatty stomach? Worried.
Metformin can also cause memory loss. I took metformin for diabetes and now have memory loss.
Hi Lewis,
Yes, those appear to be common adverse effects from Metformin. The thing with prescription drugs is that they all have side effects. They are the reason you experience such conditions and I can only say they will most likely be there until you stop taking it. I don't think your body can adapt to something that causes it any sort of trauma, and therefore you may not become more tolerant to these effects over time.
When prescribed appropriately, metformin is noted to cause few adverse effects. That said, the dosage may be something you need to discuss more with your doctor. A smaller dose should, in turn, lead to less side effects.
I am not a doctor; just basing my opinion on research I have done.

My sugar has been very high for several years. 250-350. When it would get down to 200, I would have symptoms of low blood sugar. The Dr. put me on metformin, 500mg, twice daily. I've been eating 3 meals a day, and peanut butter or peanut butter and crackers as snacks. I've been on it about a week and feel absolutely miserable. Nausea, weak, sleepy, gas, and vomiting a little bit. How long do these side affects last and how serious are they? My sugar stays more consistently below 200, but I feel like death warmed over and absolutely useless because I cannot accomplish anything! Any advice or suggestions?
I am presently taking janumet 100/1000 with my evening meal, however I still have to take 1000 mg of metformin plus bitter melon in order for my glucose level to between 120 and 135. Cannot eat but a tablespoon of carbs. Is this too much metformin?
Does metformin cause you to have a b-12 and vitamin d deficiency?
