Metformin (glycomet) 500 Mg Dosage Adjustment (Top voted first)
UpdatedI am a 74-year-old male. I have had type 2 diabetes since the year 2012 and I have been taking Glycomet from the very beginning. I first started off slow with 250 mg twice a day, then went to 500 mg twice a day. One after lunch and one after dinner. As of late when I am taking 500 mg after breakfast, after two hours or so I am finding that I am experiencing mild hypoglycemia. Hence my doctor (brother) suggested me to take 250 mg after breakfast, 500 mg after lunch and 250 mg after dinner. That is dividing the same 1000 mg per day into three dosages. 250/500/250 per day. Is it a good proposition? He says that if I'm eating a small portion of food for breakfast, a little bit at lunch and a small amount of food at dinner time, these dosages will take care of the glucose levels. Is it true? Can any knowledgeable gentleman explain and advise, please?

Well, I'm not a gentleman, being female and all, but yes, some people do need to split their doses up more to gain a better balance. For example, I take blood pressure and heart medications that I have to split up and take several times a day, because just taking them once didn't keep my health issues under control.
As long as the medication isn't time released, you can split the pills and try them as you were advised by the doctor. But you should still keep an eye on your blood sugar and look into other options, if it keeps dropping low.
The FDA warns that this medication may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and flatulence.
What does your normal diet consist of?
I am a vegetarian. For breakfast, i take 3 idlis and for lunch i take little rice with dhal, curry and rasam and curd and again at 8 o clock in the night i take two chapthis or dosa etc. Anything in little quantities. Between meals i dont take anything. By the way as you have stated that you are a hypertensive, I would like an advise. I take Betacard 50 mg since 40 years and Amlodipine 5 mg since 20 years. Of late when i suddenly get up from the chair after sitting for long, i feel a little bit dizzy. Then it subsides in 2 or 3 minutes. Somebody told me that is called hypotension and said Amlodipine may be the culprit. So can i take this amlodipine in the evening instead of taking both the hypertensive drugs at a time?
Update to my original post:
My blood sugar levels are always under control. But I have been pointed out by many that I am becoming thin and lean since sometime. 3 months back my weight was 63kg and now it is 64.5kg. I never had any symptoms of diabetes. My doc asked me to skip the nighttime dose. I feel if I take glycomet sr 500, it will take care of me during the night also. Can I change to glycomet sr 500 instead of glycomet 500 plain?
