Medrol Pak Withdrawal Symptoms 3 Weeks Later? (Page 2)

Updated

Hello. I was prescribed a Medrol pak (6 days 4mg) for a sinus infection. I felt great while taking it. Finished up on 8/12. Couple days later started getting awful hot flashes Few days later jittery in the mornings and loads of anxiety. Then started having trouble sleeping...tossed and turned all night with waves of hot flashes. I'm 6 months postpartum and nursing a baby. Do you think these symptoms are withdrawal from the Medrol? It's right at 3 weeks now. I've had sweaty hands, jitters, racing heart. When will it end? What will help it?

I used Benadryl for awhile too...and tried melatonin. I also drank some herbal tea. Not much really helped.

I have been dealing with the insomnia since I started the pack on 10/1. I may have had 3 nights where I got more then 4-5 hours, otherwise, it's 1-3 hours in 30 minute spurts. I am also still dealing with the heart palpitations and increased bpm, causing it to jump to over 100 just walking across the room. Night sweats aren't helping. I have also started getting these 'head flashes', just as I'm falling asleep. (??) I really think if I could just get some sleep, things would improve.

Stefani, how are you doing now. Tomorrow will be three weeks after my last dose. I am now getting more sleep... some nights 7+ hours, then the next night 2-3. Still dealing with heart Palps and fast heartbeat. Had a stress test yesterday. Won't get those results til Nov. I am so frustrated!! Before the pack I was active, volunteering, working out.

Are you all losing weight? I have lost 15lbs since taking the pak and it keeps dropping. :(

Yes. I've lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks. I may get hungry, but I still have to make myself eat.

Ditto. I wonder if this is all related. I still don't know if I'm suffering postpartum anxiety or this is all from the damn Medrol. :(

Are you issues worse in the morning and then get better as the day goes on? Mornings are awful for me but I start to feel better after 5pm.

Yes, worse in the morning. On top of that, I'm doing physical therapy.

RacerD, I'm sure you are still dealing with the side effects. I'm glad my nausea is very minimal, (but i still feel unwell) and that my blood pressure is back to normal. My biggest problems are the heart Palps and the fast heartbeat with minimal exercise. (And, of course, my messed up sleep pattern) are you dealing with fast heartbeat as well?

Yes I've been feeling my heart beating and having heart palps. I even wore a Holter monitor and they found I was having PVCs. I was supposed to go get an echo but haven't scheduled it yet. My BP and heart rate are good though. My BP is actually a bit on the low side. So the numbers look good. It's just the feeling of it beating constantly that is driving me crazy.

Yup. I wore the Holter last Thursday-Friday, and had a nuclear stress test and echocardiogram last Monday. I won't get my results until Nov.

Oh wow...we have been down a similar path. Ugh. Did your Holter test show PVCs? The only think I haven't tested is my adrenal/cortisol levels. I'm having an ultrasound of my thyroid tomorrow.

Fedup, I really do think there must be a hormonal connection. How old are you? I'm 49 and definitely perimenopause. I think the steroid just made all the hormone stuff way worse. :(

Didn't get my results back yet on the Holter. I am 53, and also in perimenopause.

Were you having any anxiety/nervous type issues before? I wasn't really....not like this. Not the heart pounding, wired/tired, etc. I had my hormones tested and no estrogen or progesterone but I'm nursing. Nothing really changed except taking the Medrol. This happened to me about 3 years ago too coming off an IVF cycle and I had been on prednisone. I think it causes some sort of cortisol/adrenal/hormone issue. It took me 3 months to recover that time. Maybe the Lexapro is going to start helping. I got paranoid taking the Ativan and stopped it Saturday. Now I feel like I'm having some kickback from stopping it. So sick of this. Hope you start feeling better. I'm going on 9 weeks since I stopped taking it.

Never had anxiety issues before. I did decide, though, that I won't take any medication to help with the side effects, unless medically necessary to prevent health issues. I was prescribed bp pills, but didn't take them, I kept track of it, and it fell back to normal on its own. My Cardiologists said he probably wouldn't either, unless absolutely needed, since he believes these are still side effects.
Benedryl is working again for me, so I am getting some sleep. But, the hot flashes aren't helping. Today is 3 weeks since my last pill.

RacerD. How did your thyroid test go? I hope everything there is normal. My sleep is gerting better, and my heart Palps are getting better... just wish heart rate would too. Today is 22 days past my last pill.

I Will be going in on Monday to get my thyroid levels checked. I found out today that my stress test was normal. I won't get the rest of cardio results until next Friday. I really hope my heart rate improves by then.
Any change for the better for you, RacerD?

My thyroid came back with a small nodule that they want to biopsy which is not unusual. The endo doc said it shouldn't be causing me any symptoms so I don't blame it for what's going on. I'm still the same as far as heart palps, anxiety and sleep issues. :( I see a cardiologist next Friday to follow up on the recommended stress test and echo. This is ridiculous.

Glad your thyroid test came back ok... good luck with the biopsy. I've decided to have my levels tested again since my T4 was at the top of the normal range (overactive thyroid) during my last blood work two weeks ago. Will compare. I'm thinking everything is high because of these sleep issues!
Right now, I'm just dealing with these Palps/high heart rate and sleep issues. Which isn't helping my anxiety. (Oh, btw.. 'Concerned' was me.)
Good luck next Friday.
