What is the maximum dose of suboxone or subutex when you have severe pain?

I have a question about suboxone. How long does it take for 1 tablet to dissolve under my tongue?

A tablet will take longer than the strips. I’ve had tablets in my mouth for 15 minutes (both the suboxone and subutex versions). I prefer the suboxone strips because you can do a buccal administration and forget about it. You won’t swallow it and there’s less saliva that might wash it away.

120 mg. My Dr has brought me up to 10 mg. of Subs. But I still don't think it's enough. I've been off the oxys for 9 days. Will things approve the longer I take the Subs?

What are you hoping to achieve with suboxone?

1) prevent cravings: once a day is fine at that dose.
2) pain management: cut the strip into four or six, and take every 6 or 4 hours respectively, up to the max daily dose your dr has prescribed.

In either case discuss your goals with suboxone with your provider and share these ideas with him.

I’m interested to know how you decide to go from here and your outcome - please keep me updated.

I am taking Subs for both pain management and cravings. I am going to start counseling next month. I just want to know I'm on the right dose. Would eventually want to lower the mgs of the subs for pain management. I went to my pain management Dr to get of pain meds. I just thought I'd feel better.

I'm taking the pills and not the strips because the pills are generic and lower in cost. But I thought I'd feel better and I'm having a hard time when to take them during the day.

Sorry, I just saw your first reply. Your goal is both pain management and cravings. Okay...

So, I’d ask your dr if you can take smaller doses more often throughout the day to manage pain. Perhaps 2-4mg every 4-6 hours. This will not work not help with pain, but manage cravings as well. Two birds with one stone.

And yes, counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy, groups sessions, NA/AA are very good tools to add to your toolbox while you are enjoying the benefits of suboxone.

Good luck with the discussion with your suboxone doctor. I hope it goes well and you achieve your goal of both pain management and cravings.

It’s the insurance companies that encourage putting ppl in a different class of meds (methadone, fentanyl, suboxone) for pain. No wonder people are taking illicit drugs. If a chronic pain PT gets used to this med then the doc cuts them off they have almost no where else to turn. Wrong class of med for pain.

Not sure what the answer is, but insurance companies should stop flip-flopping with patient's medications and cutting off dr arms. I would never take any of those for pain, good luck trying to get off. NOT! Those meds are for treatment of drug addiction not pain management - two different things.

The max by law is 4 8/2mg a day. That's the max Legally. Hope that helps.

I agree a hundred percent with what you have said. I'm now so miserable, because I believed in my doctor. No pain relief what so ever. Placebo effect, truly disgusting that doctors would treat their patients this way. I have had neck surgery from a bad car accident & also suffer from osteoarthritis of lower back and hips!!! I agreed to try this subutex. NOW I AM A ADDICTED. Nothing like putting my faith in my doctor to only have it be slammed back at me!!!! Live in pain every day, sure isn't quality living like I had before. Can't trust everyone and everybody isn't f***ing lying about there issues!!! Pissed in MI.

Max is 4 8-2s a day by law in the US. I will warn you that this dose is unnecessary and the less of this crap you have to take to get by ok is all I would do. Seems like there's a point where they just make you have a headache and no apatite,so the less is best. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear about your car accident.
That is what eventually caused me to go to a pain management Dr. I became addicted to pain killers going to the Dr for 7 years. A month ago I knew I had to make a change and asked my Dr to change me to Subs. My pain level has gone down almost to nothing and I'm much clear headed and becoming a better me. Please let me k ow how your doing. Take care

I think its important to recognize the difference between dependence and addiction.

You can be dependent on the pain medicine regardless if you are taking the drug as prescribed or if you are taking "a little bit more," or abusing them.

Addiction—or compulsive drug use despite harmful consequences—is characterized by an inability to stop using a drug; failure to meet work, social, or family obligations; and, sometimes (depending on the drug), tolerance and withdrawal. The latter reflect physical dependence in which the body adapts to the drug, requiring more of it to achieve a certain effect (tolerance) and eliciting drug-specific physical or mental symptoms if drug use is abruptly ceased (withdrawal). Physical dependence can happen with the chronic use of many drugs—including many prescription drugs, even if taken as instructed.

Thus, physical dependence in and of itself does not constitute addiction, but it often accompanies addiction. This distinction can be difficult to discern, particularly with prescribed pain medications, for which the need for increasing dosages can represent tolerance or a worsening underlying problem, as opposed to the beginning of abuse or addiction.

4 doses of 8/2 mg is the legal limit. I don't think this is a good candidate for pain control. It's highly addictive, more so than Perks or hydro codon. This is really not a great pain reliever. More for addicts. Methadone is even preferred for pain, the withdrawal is about the same. Suboxone may be worse that Methadone withdrawal, which lasts for up to 35-40 days,as opposed to oxycodone, where withdrawal lasts no longer than 7dsys and is way better for pain. Suboxone isn't a better option or less dangerous, just more addictive. God bless you.

My old insurance company paid for 120 monthly, that 4 ×daily

However this yr they cut it down to 3 times daily and stated it will soon be just twice daily. I do believe that one can overdose on this medication, for the simple reason of trying to find the high pain pills gave them, and I am talking about addicts. I am an addict but this medication is the last step of getting the help on needs.

6 is WAY TOO MUCH to take on a daily basis. You need to talk to your Dr Suboxone can make you sicker than all get out, especially if you are still looking for a high that the pain pills gave you. Please BE CAREFUL!!!
