Managing High Blood Pressure & Afib (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi, I am an Indian, age 78, 5'7" in height and weigh 60 kg. I'm a vegan, I do yoga and light exercise. All parameters pathological test reports normal except that I've been on high blood pressure medicine for over 20yrs. Previously I was taking atenolol 50mg and amlodipine 5mg, whereas my blood pressure was quite controlled. About 4 years back symptoms of Afib developed. Doc prescribed telma CT 40/6.25mg, metoprolol 50 + cilacar 10 and xeralto 20 in the morning and telma 40 in the evening. My BP still ranges around 150/95, no improvement in Afib - which repeats every month or so. Is it not a case of being over-medicated? Can I go back to just taking amlodipine? How do I get rid of Afib? Are there any changes you can suggest?

It is really hard to say, and it would be best to follow your doctor's instructions. The NIH warns that these medications may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, hypotension, palpitations, and increased urination.
What are your afib symptoms? How severe are they?
As to being vegan, what does your normal diet consist of? It is very important that you get proper nutrition, including protein, calcium, and potassium, if you don't it may aggravate such issues, and make them worse. I am only asking, because some people do not understand that if they are not eating meats, cheese, and etc., they have to replace the protein by other means, as well as the other nutrients. We can't just go with only a vegetable and carbohydrate diet.

Thanks mr Verwon
A fib usually comes at wee hours when I am asleep. The fast palpitations awaken me. Feel, restless, irritable and uncomfortable. Heart rate may even go to 140 or may come down to 50. Bp also comes down and fluctuates. This may last a couple of hours to about one day! Slowly becomes normal. May repeat in 2/3 weeks and sometimes in 2/3months. As for the recovery, I feel fit if it lasts for a couple of hours, but may be up to 3days if longer
I take milk, yoghurt, lentils, banana etc to compensate for protein etc. Usually don't take supplements.
I feel I have been prescribed more medicines than needed, do follow doctor's instructions. He has other reasons to console.
Reference my previous update.
Can someone with A Fib share his experiences with regard to medication, precautions and lifestyle etc that can help manage Afib to people like me. Is it really incurable? My doctor says you will have to learn to live with it..
