Lyrica And Stomach Issues
UpdatedMy fiance was in a car accident on December 3, 2013. Following the accident, he had extreme back pain, but nothing showed up on an X-Ray. For some reason, that we couldn't really understand, his doctor prescribed him Lyrica (100mg, 3x/day). He has never been on any medication like this -he is 26 years old. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
He was on Lyrica for about a month, before he started developing serious stomach pain. The center of his abdomen would hurt so bad that he would be doubled over in excruciating pain. This was joined with extreme nausea and lightheadedness, along with cold chills. His doctor ordered a CT Scan to look at his gallbladder, and it was normal. Last Wednesday we were in the ER with this pain, and they ordered an X-Ray, as well as an ultrasound - all which were normal. They sent him home on Sucralfate, and Pantoprozole saying he had a stomach ulcer. He hasn't taken any Lyrica since last Monday, because he's only been on his two stomach medications. At the end of last month, his doctor also said his blood sugar was unusually high, and put him on a pre-diabetes medication.
He has been on a clear liquids diet now for about a week, and the stomach pain still persists. Last night was almost another ER trip, because the pain was so intense.
Could this be at all related to Lyrica?

I'm more inclined to think that it might be related to the car accident. I'm not a doctor, but speaking from experience, I went through a very similar thing and after years on pain management, I discovered it was never my back, at all, it was my stomach, it had been injured in the car wreck and slowly gotten worse, until I developed gastritis. To sum it up simply, it's almost like your entire stomach turns into one giant ulcer and it's very, very painful.
The Pantoprazole is one of the medications commonly prescribed to treat it, but it may take 3 or 4 months for it to heal up. The FDA lists this medication as being a PPI, it reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach and may cause side effects, such as nausea, stomach pain, headache and flatulence. Sucralfate is very similar and may also help.
However, if he does have gastritis, or even just an ulcer, then a liquid diet isn't good. He needs to eat actual food, so his stomach acid has something else to work on, other than just the lining of his stomach. The recommended diet is bland, with very little spice, no alcohol, no caffeine and nothing acidic.
Has he consulted a gastroenterologist? That would be the best thing to do to get the correct diagnosis and treatment options.
