Lorazepam And Benzo Dependence
UpdatedI am a healthy woman in my 60's and I am struggling with anxiety. I have found great relief taking small amounts (1 mg / day) of Lorezepam but am concerned about possibilities of addiction. Please advise, all input is good input. Thank you , Shelly

Unless you are abusing such a medication and taking more than prescribed, you may become dependent upon it, but not usually addicted.
The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and irritability.
How long have you been taking it? Are you on any other medications?
It is the withdrawal factor that is so frightening. Your doctor will warn you addiction and overlook withdrawal. People over the age of 60 should always be careful with any of the benzodiazepines as they're not meant for long term use. For many losing that prescribing practitioner can cause potential serious problems
I am always afraid of my posts going to the holding tank so I keep my replies short, sometimes forgetting a word or misspelling one. I found Lorazepam so terrible for anxiety I threw away one years worth. Tried to successfully switch from Alprazolam and did a really bad job, almost died
I have been able to use Clonapin successfully, never more than 1, 1mg tablet a day since my 20's. I am now 53. Even such a small dose of ANY benzo fosters dependency. I had to go without it once for over a month and felt extremely nervous, and had horrible insomnia. Benzos are the answer for anxiety as long as you keep the dose down and always have a Doctor!
Hi shelly
For a short period Ativan does help with anxiety. But they are highly addicting. If given by your PCP see a Psychiatrist who can monitor your anxiety and a therapist. There are safer medications to help with anxiety and panic disorder.
Good Luck
Re: MyaVT (# 4)
Benzodiazepines are successful for short term anxiety. They are not the only medications though. Lexapro and Cymbalta may also work even with a small amt. Your body builds a tolerance which when stopped still causes extreme withdrawal symptoms.
