I took Loestrin for about 5 years until I got married and started a family. I am curious to know if anyone else had gall bladder disease/gallstones after taking Loestrin. After having my second child I discovered through an ultrasound that I had gallstones and I had my gall bladder removed.

There is really no definitive way to say what might have caused the problem.

Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones, because they can be caused by excess levels of estrogen, which increases the cholesterol levels in your bile and slows the movement of the gallbladder.

Therefore, you have two possible factors that could have affected it, the fact that you used hormonal contraception and your pregnancies, it could have been caused by either one or they both could have contributed to compound the problem.

Many women develop them after pregnancy. However, if you took the Lo-Estrin for about 5 years, and didn't have any problems, while on it, the chances of it contributing to the problem, which occurred several years later, when you have your second child is highly unlikely.

There is a much greater chance that it was the extra estrogen produced during pregnancy.
