Lisinopril 20mg Hctz/losartan 100mg Htcz

I have been taking 20 mg lisinopril with the diuretic and my blood pressure has been anywhere from 140?/90? To 150?/98 or so. Today my doctor switched me to losartan hctz100-25 mg. I'm worried the mg in losartan is so much higher than the lisinopril. Is this safe? Will this make my blood pressure drop to an unsafe level? I took the lisinopril this morning and he told me to start the losartan tomorrow morning. Is this okay?

Hello, Melissa! How are you?

That is a normal starting dose for Losartan, it may seem a lot higher than the dosage you were taking of Lisinopril, however, since it is in a different class of medications, it is actually only a little higher, which I'm guessing is due to the fact that your blood pressure readings were still high and need further lowering.

However, if you're unsure, feel free to double check with your doctor or pharmacist, you should never be afraid to approach them with your concerns.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.

Thank you so much! I started the Losartan the next morning and I haven't noticed any side effects or issues so far. I suppose I was worried because the mg was so high it would drop my blood pressure too low. My doctor said the lisinopril was no longer working and that's why he changed it. I go back in 2 weeks for a blood pressure check, so we will see how the Losartan is working.

Watch your sodium. Read your labels. I keep my sodium under 250mg for each meal if it's packaged. Also, all fast food restaurants have a website so you can see how much sodium is in their food. You'd be amaized how high it all is!
