Linzess, Then Other Meds With Breakfast (Top voted first)
UpdatedJust prescribed Linzess for pain med related constipation, to be taken every day in place of my previous regimen. Reading the other postings, I am somewhat afraid to take it. Nevertheless, I would take my levothyrox 1/2 hour before the Linzess, then would take my other meds with a meal. Will the Linzess "wash out" the other meds?? Also, is "unanticipated bowel leakage" a possibility with Linzess?

Hi Molly,
Sorry to hear about the constipation from pain meds. Looking at others feedback on Linzess it's easy to get discouraged and not want to take it. However it is also important to understand that these meds tend to affect each person differently, whereas patients who don't have any serious issues with it would be less likely to feel inclined to post about their experience on it, unless they felt the need, like most people do when they have a bad experience. So that's just something to keep in mind as well when you're looking at reviews.
Concerning the idea of Linzess "washing out" the other meds - I haven't actually heard of this happening, but theoretically I imagine that it may be possible if the other meds are taken at the same time and don't get a chance to be properly absorbed/metabolized before being excreted. Although, it may just come down to adjusting your dosing regimen after discussing this with your doctor, if it did ever become a problem.
Lastly, the US National Institute of Health does list "diarrhea" as a possible side effect of Linzess (Linaclotide), in which case the possibility of "unanticipated bowel leakage" may be more likely. Never the less, my guess is that most people would probably know intuitively (hopefully moments ahead of time) when or if you needed to rush to the bathroom sooner than later.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your reply to my post about Linzess. Have spoken to my husband's MD, who says to take it one half hour before other meds with breakfast. After 5 days, have had minimal results. Diarrhea would be a blessing at this point!!
He does take acidophilus and eat yogurt with probiotics daily. He also a two time cancer survivor, and is on a puréed diet. Everything he gets goes through the blender. Have increased his vegetables > fruits due to his preference. So far, so good! Thanks for your response and suggestions.
On 06/01/2016 my husband was hospitalized with a small bowel obstruction. I believe it was related to the withdrawal of all other bowel management protocol and initiation of 290 mg. of Linzess by the physician. This was even after a follow-up visit with the MD, where he said to "give it a couple of weeks".
My husband now uses ALL of the previous bowel management protocol in addition to the LInzess, as was prescribed by the covering gastroenterologist prior to his discharge.
@Molly,
I hope your husband is doing a lot better today. Just wanted to say thanks for the update and taking the time to post back on how things are going.
Also, was wondering if your husband has given any thought to supplementing with digestive enzymes and/or probiotics to help stimulate & support the metabolic process for getting rid of the bowel obstruction? I'm not saying this is a cure-all, but I have had success with such protocols in the past - sometimes too much success LOL
Another thought I had would be to look at his diet and see where, if any changes could be made that encourage normal bowel movements - i.e. implementing more fresh fruits/veggies/fiber/etc..?
