Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 20)

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?
I got put on Levothyroxine as my thyroid has not been working for many years, but the symptoms were ignored by GP.....I have recently chucked the lot in the bin, I have completely lost my appetite and at only 7 1/2 stone I cannot afford anymore weight loss, my hair is falling out and I have been suffering terrible depression. I got the funny feeling in my head every morning but it only lasted an hour or so. I don't think this drug is ideal for an awful lot of people, but is given because its cheap......gonna take my chances with the heart problems I previously had!
I unfortunatley have side effects you guys have too. I've only been on this two weeks. My question is if you don't take these meds what's the major repercussions that any of you have incurred?
I was originally diagnosed with Grave's disease (hereditary hyperthyroidism) back in 1985. I took the radioactive iodine treatment in 1988 (3 years treating with meds). I never had to take any meds again until 2001. At that time I was diagnosed hypo. I have been on meds ever since. My weight gain of 50 lbs never dropped. My meds have recently been increased to 175mcg. One difference, I requested "Synthroid" instead of generic. While I'm not losing the weight, I do have more energy. I never felt any of the other symptome many of you mention.
Try the brand name and see how you feel. I've heard many people feel better on that.
Good luck to you all
hey I was just looking up info on hypothyroidism and memory and saw your response. I'm 18 and diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 2 months ago. I've been taking 50mg of levothyroxine and am starting synthroid tomorrow. I'm studying to be a doctor and realized my memory is often foggy after reading textbooks, and was wondering after 1 year if you feel that your memory has improved at all? thank you
I have gone up from 125 to 137. My head feels weird.
My thyroid is way underactive so the dr. adjusted it.
I have no appetite, and I feel very anti-social, and very depressed.
I have been on Levothroxine for three weeks. The first two weeks, I felt light headed, foggy and nauseated. A friend of mine (who also takes Levothroxine) told me to schedule my eating properly while taking it, especially the first meal of the day. This week, I made a point to eat breakfast exactly an hour after taking it and I feel great! My stomach has tolerated the medicine fine for seven days now, the nauseating feeling went away. The light headedness and the foggy or 'drunk' feelings are now gone. I'm already feeling improvements in my energy levels and my desire to do things. My couch potato time has cut in half. My attention span is improving daily. My appetite has slightly increased, yet I have lost three pounds this week. Before the doctors found my thyroid problem, I was inactive, lethargic, depressed, and blah for quite a few years. I blamed it on age. I'm 46 and feeling alive again. I hope this continues, and I hope you all can get here too! Try scheduling three meals a day consistantly, with your first meal being within an hour of taking it. It did wonders for me.
Thanks for the info, Linda. I'll give Armour a try. I heard about it a few years ago, but was told it was no longer available.
I have been trying for 18 months to take levothyroxine as my T4 was 4.7 but the only plus side is I'm slightly less sleepy!!. The itchyness and shakes are bad but the palpitations are the worst. I take about half my prescribed dose to try to minimise the ghastly effects. My GP thinks I'm a crazy lady and puts my the AF on my ecg down to 'just one of those things'. If anyone has any suggestions it'd be good to hear them.
I AM going off my thryroid medicine and going on the natural one Armour, I am going through breast cancer and would like to get off as many scripts as I can. The Levothrosine had me losing hair and just feeling weird and always cold. I will let u know how the Armour works.
I was feeling great and my primary doctor put me on levothroxine. Ater two weeks I began to feel very bloated and pressure under my right rib and center ab. I told my doctor and she said that it wouldn't cause those symptoms so I continued to take it and began feeling depressed, so called foggy, mood swings and the pressure under my ribcage got a lot worse. I took myself off and after two weeks feel myself again, but still have bloating and some pressure under my right ribcage. I'm seeing another doctor next week and will take it from there.
You should all try Armour. Recently a dr actuallly lied to me and told me that the government shut down armour and I would have to take Levothyroxine. It is making me sick. Armour is gentle, steady, no ups and downs,no side effects. It is not a chemical. Try it,...I am going to get back on it, with or without this particular doctor.
Started levothyroxine in August after RAI treatment for Graves in April. Feeling much better and have not had any side effects other than increased hair loss. After reading Victoria's post, I will be contacting my physician next week so see if there is something else I can take. The idea of wearing a wig is not pleasant but I guess would be better than the way I felt prior to RAI.
I read that one of the side effects of taking thyroid medicine is hair loss. I've been on levothyroxine for a few years and now have bald spots on my head. My sides are completely gone. I keep the top longer to hide it, but if this keeps up, I'll have to wear a wig. A friend of mine, who also takes the drug, is now wearing a wig because of the same problem. I tried to go off the meds, but after a week and a half, I was feeling too exhausted to function well. Is anyone experiencing excessive hair loss? (I haven't read through the several pages here) If you know of any natural remedy or replacement for levothyroxine, please let me know.
hi, i recently had a total thyroidectomy sept 29 this yr, and have to take levothyroxin sodium every day... my dosage has been upped to 200 a day now and i seem to be ok on it... i regularly have bloods done to check it as i do also for my calcium levels... i did feel dizzy in the begining but not for long...i used to get tingling and numbing in my face and fingers but apparently that was due to my calcium levels being too low, but im ok now thanks to calcium (sandocal 400) on a daily basis. .ive started having is palpataions and an anxiety rush, they dont last long but i do have more energy and can cope with more during the day than i could b4 the op.... i find walking helps me to cope with any extra energy , but i dont feel tired like i used to which is brill as i always felt tired and lathargic for years... i have however, not been as hungry..and am actually eating less...hope this helps anyone. cat
I have been taking 75MCG of Levothroxin for about a week and had a severe allergic reaction after 1 hour of being in bed. I have had allergic reactions rarely in the past and the real cause has not precisely been determined. Usually I take 2 Benedryl and within 15-30 minutes hives and tightness in breathing and tingling in ears subsides. But not this time. My tongue and roof and bottom of my mouth swelled so bad I could hardly speak. After 30 minutes of taking Benedryl I used a EpiPen shot. This took more than a few minutes to arrest the increasing pressure and swelling. After 6 hours of sleeping I still feel swelling in my tongue and mouth. I will call my Dr. today.
