Levothyroxine Is Satan (Page 2) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI don't feel so confused anymore. Now I know all of you are going through the same thing. My doctor put me on 50mcg of Levothyroxine about a month ago and I have gain 8 pounds! I get short-breathed and winded REALLY easily when working out. I used to go to the gym for 2 hours, now I can't make it longer than 30 minutes. I wake up ALL the time with tingly fingers because my hands have fallen asleep. I have headaches, I feel 100 times more lazy than before...and it's supposed to help your energy, not drain it. I e-mailed my doctor today, this is not making me happy. Not to mention I now have an acne type rash that burns like hell on my chin and I've always had clear skin. If this drug is supposed to make you feel better it sure as sh*t isn't working for me. I feel like a fat lazy a$$ with an itchhy burning rash on my face... stay away from this drug, that's my suggestion. :(
Synthroid and Levothyroxine are the same thing! Synthroid is a brand name for Levo. Google "Stop the thyroid Madness" and educate yourself about
Armour Thyroid and what it can do for you.
I have posted this before but I will say it again. Get off this toxic junk and get onto an NDT, I am on Armour Thyroid and it was like going from night to day. 1 grain of Armour gives you 60mcg of T4, and 1/2 grain, 30mcg etc etc. So if you were on 100 mcg Levo (a widely used dose) you need to go on 1 1/2 grains of Armour. (which would be 90mcg so if you were marginally medicated at 100mcg, round it up to 1 3/4 grains. You will also get the very necessary T3, T2 and T1 if you are on an NDT and they will be in a reasonable ratio. I do not know why Levo is not pulled from the shelves, I feel very sorry for people on it.
If the brand name Synthroid works for you and you decide to stay on it, have your doctor do a pre-authorization to your insurance company so you can get Synthroid for about the same price as the generic or hopefully only slightly higher. My pharmacist friend says that she highly recommends Synthroid over the generic, lots of problems with the generics on this medication. I'm allergic to the one of the binders in the generic myself.
You are lucky that Synthroid works so well for you. Unfortunately many of us are not helped at all by Synthroid; in fact, we dont get better, we get worse and doctors dont believe it; they think its all in our heads. We are the ones who need recognition that we are not crazy and Armour Thyroid.
I stopped it on my own after reading the side effects that many people were having. It was causing me more harm than good.
So now I have been taking levo for about a month and I feel better and im not short of breath anymore, but I still keep getting wierd episodes of chin acne and they hurt! It went away for a couple weeks and now its back. I hope this will stop because I work at a makeup counter and the acne makes the products look bad.
I have been on low dose of Levo for over 3 years. I have weaned myself off a few times because of severe knee pains and feeling bad in general. Dr. would scare me back on. I wish I had never started it. this time I quit and have been off for 2 months, feeling better but also improved my nutrition vis Jon Gabriele method. It is free. Also now taking an antioxidant. In a few more months I will attend a health fair to get blood work and get it sent to me. Seeing this made me more confident. His opinion on TSH levels was an eyeopener.

Me again, I have now been on 50 mcg of Levo for just over 3 months, the tingling and numbness in my left hand predominately has now got worse and I have been diagnosed as having Carpel tunnel syndrome. I am due to have my next blood test in February 2012. I have read that CTS can be caused by hypothyroidism, why
I don't know. I still feel better with the treatment I am seeing an orthopaedic surgeon in a few weeks or months .
I weaned myself off of Levo about 1.5 years ago even tho the local MD told me I might have heart attack or stroke. Went to Mayo Clinic and DR. there said not true. I had so many side effects and no weight loss with Levo. I feel better without it. I have improved my diet with more vegetables and fruits, too. (See Forks over Knives) documentary on Netflix I will go to a health fair and get blood tests eventually and read the tests myself.
I am doing well, been off of Levo for a year. I have my tsh down lower than what it was when I started Levo. I am on no meds. I drink more water, at least 2 quarts a day and drink 1 Ensure or the generic from Walgreens. Eating more plant based foods and go lightly on meat and dairy. I feel like a new person.
Been on Levo for 2 years had similar experiences and was ready to give up.Last 4 days been good, nearly, my old self. Look up Alkaline v Acid on the net, loads of sites, that are very informative, too much acidity due to stress, diet etc, investigate for yourself and give it a go its worth it.
Wow. The mention of the chin rash really got me because I had that also!! Was on Levo. for 8 months and got fed up with it. 20 lb weight gain. Brain Fog. Generally just feeling lousy as all heck. Have stopped now for 5 days and am slowing coming back to life. The bloat is already starting to exit, just like the tide going out. I never had a fat stomach until taking this drug. I don't know what the exact metabolic mechanisms are that shifted, but they have not been good nor advantageous in any way other than bringing a borderline TSH reading over the line into "normal" range. I'm not going back on it no matter what any doctor says.
I found out 2002 I had hyperthyroidism, was being treated with many different medications none helped.I finally was told 2 years later id have to have surgery to remove my thyriod glands. I was told id be off medicine and would start feeling better, instead I ended up with hypothyroidism and I am currently taking levothyroxin been on medicine for 2 years I've had no adverse reaction no weight gain pimples etc this medicine has really helped me a lot so id say stick with it and u will start feeling better!
Yes I know the feeling , you may also wanna get tested for adrenal fatigue, it has the same symptoms as hypothyroidism, I think my doc mistakenly thought it was thyroid, when it wasn't. I stopped months ago and never wanna go back on it...
Yes it does make ur body worse in my opinion , I messed up my whole body chemistry. And I gained tons of weight....no more
Hi, I have just come across your comment. I've been taking these meds for exactly a year and decided to come off them now. How are you getting on? I'm kind of scared but sick of the problems these pills have caused me... acne, insomnia etc...Trouble for me is that I have autoimmune issues so I guess eventually I'll be forced into being medicated?
I'm currently off of it so that I can do the RAI Ablation and am having heart issues being off of it. I am concerned that if you go totally off of any thyroid medicine it might be detrimental to your health, since thyroid problems affect your heart. Is it possible for you to see a holistic doctor and see if they can find something natural for you. That is what I intend to do after I'm done with the RAI Ablation. I, too, am a runner and am concerned about all the things you mentioned. Do not want to stop running. I love it. Can't run right now without Levo bcuz of exhaustion and heart issues. I hope you find something that works soon. Good luck!
Hi Clive, exactly the same problem. I was on the same pills also. My doc wouldn't take my word for it even though I knew these problems started when I started treatment. I decided to come off these pills 4/5 weeks ago and my problems have started to go but I think it will take a bit more time to adjust and for this spot problem to completely disappear... It's so tough to get a doctor to listen and it made me realise that you really have to take your own route and trial a few options. Do not let a doc bully you into taking the pills or scare you into trying your own method. Also beware of reading too much on here. I went a bit crazy by reading everyone else’s stories. Good Luck and remember you know your body better than anyone!
Would love to know what organic treatment you are doing instead of taking lexothyroxine. Hate the weight gain....
Hi I really feel for you. I have put on nearly 2 stone and its a heavy battle to even keep this weight of a whopping 12 stone.
I was heavily insulted on Sunday, by a friend whom I had not seen for 2 years who did not recognise me. He said, my God how come you got so fat!!
That was the end and I have stopped taking my 100mg of levothyroxine for good.
I am at the minute only eating enough food for a 9 month child.
I am in God's hands as this isn't a life, its a horror story called I am trapped in an alien body.
