Levothyroxine Is Satan (Page 8)

I don't feel so confused anymore. Now I know all of you are going through the same thing. My doctor put me on 50mcg of Levothyroxine about a month ago and I have gain 8 pounds! I get short-breathed and winded REALLY easily when working out. I used to go to the gym for 2 hours, now I can't make it longer than 30 minutes. I wake up ALL the time with tingly fingers because my hands have fallen asleep. I have headaches, I feel 100 times more lazy than before...and it's supposed to help your energy, not drain it. I e-mailed my doctor today, this is not making me happy. Not to mention I now have an acne type rash that burns like hell on my chin and I've always had clear skin. If this drug is supposed to make you feel better it sure as sh*t isn't working for me. I feel like a fat lazy a$$ with an itchhy burning rash on my face... stay away from this drug, that's my suggestion. :(
Hi Clive, exactly the same problem. I was on the same pills also. My doc wouldn't take my word for it even though I knew these problems started when I started treatment. I decided to come off these pills 4/5 weeks ago and my problems have started to go but I think it will take a bit more time to adjust and for this spot problem to completely disappear... It's so tough to get a doctor to listen and it made me realise that you really have to take your own route and trial a few options. Do not let a doc bully you into taking the pills or scare you into trying your own method. Also beware of reading too much on here. I went a bit crazy by reading everyone else’s stories. Good Luck and remember you know your body better than anyone!
Well I've been on Levo and for the last couple of months on Eltroxin a different version since April 2009 all 50 mcg. I have had a rash on my forehead like little white spots in a cluster which when squeezed excrete a little hard stuff. I've also had little areas of dry spotty skin about 2 centimetres in diameter on my body. Also lots of spots on my back. I know it's the meds but lately I've also had a tired feeling in the afternoons which was the original symptom of my Hypothyroidism. I have now had a boil appear which is something I have never had in my life before. I have stopped the meds and will wait and see how it goes. My TSH levels were OK on the meds. I am going to see my GP after Xmas to perhaps try something else. I am a male 62 year old.
Steph:
I have been taking Synthroid since 2002 and have gained a total of 45 pounds! I would love to know more about the organic natural path you are taking that cured you. I only have half a thyroid so I feel doomed to take something for the rest of my life. Hopefully natural at least.
Glad to see a positive response here. Every post is negative. I was worried about negative side affects. I have been on Levo for about 2 weeks now, I feel like I have more energy. Not crashing in the middle of the day or at night. My face is also more clear now than before. I always had break outs due to the hormones being out of wack and I noticed a change in my face within a week. Hoping the weight comes off, all of these stories make me nervous. I think my appetite has changed. I do not crave as much as I did before and when I do eat , I am lucky to finish one plate of food, let a lone a 2nd helping.
I'm currently off of it so that I can do the RAI Ablation and am having heart issues being off of it. I am concerned that if you go totally off of any thyroid medicine it might be detrimental to your health, since thyroid problems affect your heart. Is it possible for you to see a holistic doctor and see if they can find something natural for you. That is what I intend to do after I'm done with the RAI Ablation. I, too, am a runner and am concerned about all the things you mentioned. Do not want to stop running. I love it. Can't run right now without Levo bcuz of exhaustion and heart issues. I hope you find something that works soon. Good luck!
I have been on 100 mcg levothyroxine for a couple years now. I used to run half marathons and have always been extremely active. Fast forward to now-extreme pain in muscles, hurts to walk, bone pain, can feel I've lost bone mass, depression, extreme foggiess, actual confusion at times, vision problems, have to take a pill to fall asleep, bloat, look pregnant, always had a fantastic slim body, now 25 lbs overweight. The worst has been anxiety especially horrible in social situations. I used to have joy and would love to socialize. Finally when my dr started in with the antidepressants and actually laughed about my confusion and suggested I am far too young at 40 for dementia I realized I may be dealing with a total bonehead! Started taking the pill every other day and for the past 3 have taken none. Feel my body and soul returning to me. Would rather go back to my original problem thinning hair and buy a wig than live the absolute hell levothyroxine has caused my life. I pray I can just get off this and return to being a wife and mother to 6 kids. I have no idea if this is dangerous to completely stop but feeling the fog lift I'm scared as hell to take any!!
My mother in law takes armour and loves it.. Had been on Levothyroxine, and put on weight even tho resting hardly any calories. Went on armor and list weight and has had no problems. She loves it. I've just barely had my thyroid taken out due to thyroid cancer, I was put on 150mcg of Levothyroxine for a four weeks after surgery...the let three days it seemed to kick in and all the symptoms i see everybody getting FROM Levothyroxine i had pre-Levo and were going away. My meds have been switched now as I'm awaiting RAI ablation... And the exhaustion is ball...i can't wait to get back on regular thyroid medicine...altho, when endocrine specialist surgeon and my nuclear medicine doctor tell me it is time to find an endocrinologist, i will be looking for one that does holistic medicine...I'm hoping to try something natural...especially after reading all these comments.
Sometimes having the dosage adjusted makes the difference. A co-worker developed the rash but later found out it was because she was allergic to the dye that may not be present in generic or brand names. Go back to your doctors. I cant say much because i have been on it for only four days; but I'm in need of a solution due to the symptoms of hypothyroid and I cant wear weaves or wigs anymore!
Thats how my docter is, he doesnt know much about it. I asked if there was a natural way to help me, such as that armour thyroid stuff ive read about. He was NO help at all. Docters what do they no lol. Good luck, and maybe in few weeks you will feel great, and glad you done it, but i think you should gradualy wean yourself off it, but its up to you. All the best sid :-)
Thank you for your advice! I will do what I feel is right. I was only on 25mg so I am just cutting them out all together. I hope this is the right decision. It's all about trial and error though isn't it! That's life. If I start to feel rubbish I'll try one every other day. I'm not listening to my doctor though as she clearly doesn't know enough about the meds to comment.
Hi sid, if you a bit scared of coming off them completly, just try taking one evry other day, and see how you feel. Maybe you need to wean yourself off them slowly. I take sea kelp, spirulina and a few other supplements for my menopause. Also ive cut out carbohidrates and most dairy products. I eat a lot of fruit and veg now, and drink a lot of water. Good luck sid and remember only you know how your body feels, not the docters, they just hand out pills and think evrybodys needs the same treatment, we are all diffrent, anyway enough of my babbling on, take care, and do it your way xx :-)
Thanks for the advice. I feel a bit alone with my decision as I haven't come across many forums of people coming of meds... I am 26 and felt a little tired and withdrawn at times but since taking the meds has been a pain for me from day 1 but after a year of thinking I have no choice I have no decided to give it a go without. I have told my doctor and she said it's my decision but to be careful. I have made a journal to keep track of my mood, weight etc... I just want to feel me again and I haven't done for some time. Do you recommend any diets, supplements? I REALLY could do with some tips. I am already pretty healthy and do regular exercise. Thanks, Sid.
Hi sidney. My daughter whos been on levo for over 15 years has decided, after whats happened to me, to only take hers every other day and she says she feels better for it. But every case is different. You have to decide whats best for YOU. Inform your docter if u do decide to cut down or stop. I only took it for 4 days, so wasnt very long, not like you. Ive gota have blood test in another 6 months, so hopefully with my diet and taking supplements its gona be ok by then, but im so glad i
stopped taking them. I hope whatever you decide it will be the right decision.:-)
Hi, I have just come across your comment. I've been taking these meds for exactly a year and decided to come off them now. How are you getting on? I'm kind of scared but sick of the problems these pills have caused me... acne, insomnia etc...Trouble for me is that I have autoimmune issues so I guess eventually I'll be forced into being medicated?
Anna so sorry to hear that you are feeling so bad. I understand how you feel. I was on levo only 4 days and i feel its done same to me. I came off it, but still feel weird. Its bought me on my period as well and ive not had one for 3 months and really heavy too. I dont feel same as i did before like you, but the docter said it should be out my system within 24 hours. Wish id never took them in first place. Im trying to self help with my diet and stuff and am now afraid to take any medication after this.
Hi Jennifer, how did it mess you up chemically? It did the same to me too. I lost almost all feelings of emotion, including for my boyfriend who I was so excited about and lost interest in just about everything in life. It has turned my lively, passionat,e caring, funny personality into a very boring and dull. I have the same symptoms as someone taking an SSRI antidepressant. I have been off this drug for 3 weeks now, but most of my feelings still havent returned. Anyone else experience this?
Yes it does make ur body worse in my opinion , I messed up my whole body chemistry. And I gained tons of weight....no more
I understand this, drink more water and eat as much organically as you can. Too much meat that has hormones and processed foods was my problem I am off of Levo for over a year now ans TSH is lower than when I started it. WATER FIRST..
I am unsubscribing to this site as I no longer need help with Low thyroid.
Cant beleve ive had to come home from work today coz i feel so disintoriated and weird. I stopped taking levothyroxine yesturday after only taking them 4 days becoz of bad side effects. I couldnt wait for it to get out my systom, but now i think that its done something to aggrivate my whole body. I just feel so bad. I just wish id never took it in first place.
I know , I couldnt take it anymore...I eat healthy and lol for alternatives to the pill..it made me bloated, lost tons of hair..tons...and just stopped...haven't been to doctor in awhile...so gonna wait it out...good luck !!!
