Levothyroxine Is Satan (Page 11) (Top voted first)

Updated

I don't feel so confused anymore. Now I know all of you are going through the same thing. My doctor put me on 50mcg of Levothyroxine about a month ago and I have gain 8 pounds! I get short-breathed and winded REALLY easily when working out. I used to go to the gym for 2 hours, now I can't make it longer than 30 minutes. I wake up ALL the time with tingly fingers because my hands have fallen asleep. I have headaches, I feel 100 times more lazy than before...and it's supposed to help your energy, not drain it. I e-mailed my doctor today, this is not making me happy. Not to mention I now have an acne type rash that burns like hell on my chin and I've always had clear skin. If this drug is supposed to make you feel better it sure as sh*t isn't working for me. I feel like a fat lazy a$$ with an itchhy burning rash on my face... stay away from this drug, that's my suggestion. :(

"Thyroid hormones control metabolism, growth, body temperature, muscle strength, appetite, and the health of your heart, brain, kidneys, and reproductive system. Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that absorb iodine. The thyroid uses iodine to create the T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) hormones." Levo, synthroid Armour and the like are taken to replace the thyroid's natural hormones that are not doing their jobs due to hypo conditions or are inexistent due to rai or thyroidectomy. Levo, synthroid and the like have a huge multi faceted purpose and to say it is just to make our blood look good or has a simple task...and it must be "something else" that is going on is preposterous.

I agree with Jane. I have also been on this poison for 20 years and my weight has always been an issue too. This despite the fact that I work out for over an hour a day and eat a very balanced diet. This medication has caused my hair to fall out, depression, body aches, blurred vision, a non-existent libido, glucose uptake issues, mood swings, insomnia and salt cravings. As for the BS that you will die or have a stroke or whatever other nonsense the medical profession tells you, it is just not true. I went off of Levox for a year and felt fine. My TSH went up so I was put back on it, but this time it was a different generic and it was truly an evil experience. I was literally gaining weight daily and I felt like I was going to die. If you insist on being on thyroid meds or you truly do better on them, STAY WITH SYNTHROID. My son also has severe thyroid disease and yet after he was put on the generic, he fell into a depression so severe, he was diagnosed as bi-polar and the doctors wanted him on lithium. I knew better. I pulled him off of Levox and he stayed off of it for a year. He was still struggling with depression and so I paid the $150 for the 90 day supply of Synthroid and he improved dramatically. Within a week he was a different person. My own endo suggested that I get off of the drugs and try probiotics. I am done for good with any generic form of this drug, read what people say, it does everything it is supposed to cure and more.

Stop taking levo and demand to go on the non generic Synthroid. There is something particularly evil in the new batch of levo that has hit the market. The great news is that you should see those side effects go away, the bad news is that synthroid is rarely covered by insurance (do you think we are being used by the drug industry? Hmmm) good luck

I've been on Levothyroxine .75 mcg for about 2 years now. I am borderline hypothyroidism. I really hate the side effects. I have severe pain throughout my body, I can barely sleep during the night hours, I end up sleeping during the day. Before this medicine I had tons of energy and now barely any. I could go to bed around 12 am and wake up at 7 am refreshed and ready to take on the day, now go to bed if I can by 3 am and wake up around 7 am take the kid to school and crash almost all day long until I have to pick her up. I could drive my car without any pain while driving except during the cold days of the year, now in constant pain when I walk or drive. I can't lose weight. I've been trying to get down to a healthy 105 pounds from my current weight of 123-127 pounds ( I'm only 5 feet tall, so 105 is considered a healthy weight with 20% BMI which was normal for me). I used to control my body temp, now body is always freezing cold and my head is hot at the same time. I used to not get vertigo, but now I do. I really think this medicine is not helping me at all. I really think that I should quit taking this medication to see if it is the problem with my health. I really don't want to get a Permanent Handicapped Placard before I turn 40.

Patricia, did your doctor take you off the med or did you stop it on your own?

Jennyb - That is so horrible I am so sorry you had to go through all of that!! I am glad things are looking up for you though. I know ho frustrating those chin bumps can be.. I wish I could give you advice as to what to take but I had to stop taking levo to get them to go away :( Have you asked your doctor? If he says they're not from the levo tell him you know other people who have the same symptoms and you want something done about it.. I think there are other drugs for hypothyroidism you could try... maybe ask about those. I have a friend that has acne and uses proactive but I do not know if it would work on those bumps, I never tried it. I was borderline hypo so my doc just said stop taking it... im scared to go back now, ive been dieting and exercising daily to try and solve all my problems without meds, haha... good luck in your search though!! I hope everything works out for you!! I know how frustrating all this can be! hang in there :)

What kind of medicine did your dr change you to?

Hi! I am a 54 year old woman that lives today Cancer free and Thyroid free. I had some questions about my health and decided to take them to my Dr's office. Well in 2009 I was out with a friend watching 4 wheelers in the hills when I came back with a case of celluitis from a bad mouthed wood ant or some such, upon seeing a Dr I received an antibiotic, he noticed I had a dark coloration on my left ankle. I was told to go and get a doppler scan on my leg which led to getting put on blood thinners due to 4 clots . I had a damaged valve in my ankle two clots in the calf and one behind my knee. I put up with the warfarin for a little over a year then changed to fish oil.

I went to my MD and she said "what do I want to do"?, after I told her my Grandmother on my Mom's side had hypothyroid. I told her I wanted the full thyroid test not the two column but all four. The test came back both times in the mild hyper range. I was confused but read online till I was darn near blind to understand what was going on. The MD wanted to know what I wanted to do next , I said see an Endocrinologist . I really do not know what was going through the MD's mind. I am telling everyone this because I was recently asked by my Endocrinologist how long have you felt off or out of sorts? . I thought maybe 2 1/2 years but upon further reflection I figured most of my adult life. This last November 2013 I was diagnosed with a severe thyroid condition. The right side was visibly swollen and felt like someone was laying their hand on my throat. The left side felt tight . I had been winded and tired, the last 15 years I have weighed the most I have ever. (205) Before the 205 I weighed 135 ,140, 145, 155 and you know the rest.

I went through the hoops the MD the radiology test the Endocrinologist and the referal to the Surgeon. I have been very lucky. Since my clot issues I have been fighting through a ocean of paperwork and got on SSI after two years of DR visits and verifications. I was told I must prop my left leg up every three hours and I have yet to find a job where this is permissible. I WILL RE-INVENT MYSELF!

When I met the surgeon I was glad he was one who looked at you, listened to you and answered you as well as reassured you. The thought of the Endocrinologist was "I could try to biopsy your thyroid but it would be like several stabs in the dark." I could put you on medication but in 6 months you will be back for surgery ." " I generally don't like to see the swelling get past 2 1/2 ,see by 3cm you are looking at cancer creeping in." When we do the surgery we will biopsy the nodules (2) I had) and go from there.

I was to stay 1 night and go home and did just that. I made ice water my friend. I chewed things smaller for a couple of weeks. I still get a little dry throat or horse if I talk to much . Now 4 weeks out of surgery with no cancer per the biopsy. I was a wreck for a week over that one.

The family has a scattered history I have a small pea sized spot in my left breast closer to the center of my chest ,my older brother has had skin cancer my grandmother breast cancer my uncle prostate cancer. I have been given a chance to rethink and redo my life.

I am currently on the Levothoxrine started it at 125mcg and at two weeks after surgery the Endocrinologist moved it to 137mcg. This change was due to the fact that I am overweight and do not need to gain anymore still too soon to tell how it will work. I have menopause and it is most likely playing havok with things as well. I notice massive hunger in the morning after the 1hr wait taking the pill. Night time I get the heat rushes not too different from before the surgery. I am now considered Hypothyroid. I have no Thyroid. I am Synthetic Woman! LOL! I sure hope the weight will come off and I can feel something that resembles normal. I can breath better and do not get as winded. Thank God! for small advances.

Verwon:
You said, "Not everyone experiences them"
It would be a good idea if someone did the statistics on just what percentage of patients do have the debilitating side effects of Levothyroxine, but, of course, big pharma would squelch that project in it's infancy.
I personally think it should be pulled from the shelves, I have not met ONE person yet who feels reasonably normal on this drug. I even ask other people if they have friends with thyroid problems, are on Levothyroxine and do they have any complaints? The answers are a resounding YES and they describe them as completely debilitated.
Stop taking this poison and get on Armour Thyroid or any other NDT. ( Natural Desiccated Thyroid). Doctors must know this and yet it goes on and on for years - probably because doctors don't know enough about how to treat Thyroid problems.
But don't forget, Hillary Clinton's superbly educated doctor knew about it and Hillary did not get the toxic Levo, she got Armour!

I came across this site when researching whether or not I could take Nyquil with Levothyroxine. Apparently the answer is no, so I'm happy that I thought to check before taking it.

I've been on Levothyroxine for around 12 years for hypothyroidism. I'm blown away by all the replies because I've never experienced any problems on the drug, not even weight gain and it's kept my thyroid levels perfect for the entire time.

I told my doctor about this thread and while he said weight gain was a "possibility" he said it's not the norm and suggested that perhaps many of the symptoms others are experiencing are not due to Levothyroxine by itself but by other medications begun shortly before or shortly after Levothyroxine was first prescribed.

There is a LOT of information on the web regarding interactions between certain drugs - and Levothyroxine is a biggie.

I hope you all manage to find some relief from your symptoms!

I am so sorry, but it made me laugh when you said levothyroxine is satan could not help it. I too am on levothyroxin which i think is diffrent than levothyroxine.I was going to start taking garcinia cambogia to help me lose weight, but i find out people who are on levothyroxin cannot take garcinia. I never had a weight problem til i turned 40 and started taking levothyroxin among other medications. So i just hope you find the right medicine to help you one that does not have the kind of side effects you experienced previously.
