Loss of bone mineral density is known to occur with long-term use of Levothyroxine and the FDA does include a warning regarding this in the monograph. While the warning does state that it occurs primarily in women, especially those who are post menopausal, it does not state that it is strictly limited to females.

The issuance of a warning about bone mineral density loss is intended to include the problems that can occur with your skeletal anatomy, since that specifically concerns your bones.

However, having had a problem with the medication, which cause other health conditions, you should report this to the FDA and can do so at the following number:

Are there any other questions or concerns?

I can relate to the tingling in numbness it started in on the top of my head after partial removal of thyroid (left lobe was remove) it went away I believe a week after surgery and than started coming and going briefly in 2007,when all symptoms of not being able to sleep for almost 6 or 7days and the feeling of having fallen to my left without moving at all I started on lunesta 2mg helped for a week ,So I stopped and in 2008,2009 2010, had the same prob again and again in 2011 started in April started again with ambien this time and the side effects for both lunesta and ambien are anxiety and panic attacks ,in March of 2009 I was beyond exhaustion could not get out of the bed had to force myself to eat walk function so Doc started me on levothyroxine when he compared my blood work with (and get this) Dr Lim who is a endocrinologist she did not even compare my test with the other test that the surgeon who removed my left thyroid or my primary doc, I've been on levothyxroxine for 2 yrs and the numbness and tingling moved to the center of my brain and mybrain keeps trying to find the faces of people I think about or beyond what it should normally be doing it wont stop or shut off when THINKING OF anything a feeling strong feeling of despair or sadness would come on than the crying spells started and after seeing chiropractor it went away and came back but the pain was now through out my body nerve pressure with pain and ache were shooting down my spine into my arms wrist ankles seen chio again cause right side of the back of my neck felt stiff and the feelings were back and the crying got worse , So I stopped eating cookies chocolate cookies diet sodas eating more veggies and stopped eating cheese and stopped the meds simivistatin for cholesterol which side effects include restless leg syndrome and it did . The tingling and numbness came back after a few days of being gone and stopped two 1/2 days ago .I believe the levo is causing this as it is the only thing I am still taking other then the enalapril for high blood meds .I wonder why the FDA hasn't made sure these side effects are not on the pamphlets that come with the medicine .My personal opinion is our bodies are not made to break down synthetic drugs only natural herbs from the earth I believe this is one of the contributors to cancer and stomach disorders and some birth defects /Chemicals are in everything and why does everything have to have chemicals

I did alot of research into what Levothyroxine really does to the body. It rips most of the phosphorous out of your bones as well as calcium. It rips out your vitamins D an E. It rips out your potassium and magnesium, too. It causes brittle bones, dry skin, hair to fall out, muscle cramps and a whole range of other stuff. And no, they will NEVER tell you any of this. I had to dig deep to find this out. As I am now suffering alot of these effects from it. They also will never tell you that Hashimoto's is caused by a wheat intolerance. Those of us with Hashi's, we cannot digest or breakdown wheat in our digestive systems. The body thinks wheat looks alot like the thyroid gland, so it attacks it and gives you Hashimoto's. The more wheat based products you eat like pasta and bread, the more you have Hashimoto's and higher thyroid levels. They will never tell you this and and never tell you to simply stop eating wheat based products. They want everyone on drugs. The drug companies make trillions. And doctors have no interest in making you well because they get kickbacks from the drug companies and a healthy patient means no business. The healthier you are, the less you will go to the doctor.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO WHAT I HAVE SAID IN A EARLIER COMMENT.I HAVE CONTACTED A ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON TO PERFORM A SURGICAL PROCEDURE ON MY LUMBAR AREA.BUT BECAUSE OF THE LOW BONE DENSITY,AS WAS NOTED IN A NUMBER OF BONE SCANS OVER THE YEARS.SINCE TAKING LEVOTHYROXINE.I COULD NOT HAVE THE PROCEDURE DONE.IF ONE HAS OSTEOPOROSIS OR POROSITY OF THE BONE,WHAT PURPOSE WOULD IT SERVE SINCE THE TITANIUM PLATE AND RODS AND SCREWS WOULDN`T HOLD AND WOULD CAUSE EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND SUFFERING.

I read that the intake of Levothyroxine after longterm use causes "Breast Cancer"...and the deteriation of the "Bone". And my Doctor prescribed this medication for me for "Hypothyroidism".

So....Now I'm looking for a way out from taking this medication. I am aware that there are various medicines out there for Hypothyroidism....but the question still remains...."Are they Safe?"....because Levothyroxine isn"t.

Hello all, I have too recently been put on Levo.. I, however, am on the opposite end. "Hyperthyroidism".. I am 6'2 and super think.. barely 165 lbs.. with a metabolism out of this world... I finally went to the Doc and was put on 50 mcg of Levo.. 4 weeks after, my dosage was bumped up to 75 mcg.. before taking the meds, I was having plenty of heart palpitation, trouble sleeping, etc.. the usual! SO far, the meds have been working, albeit I have only been on for a few months! Maybe the Levo works differently with Hypo then it does with Hyper?!? Just a thought..

I feel "strange" after taking the L-Thyroxine. My thinking has been foggy for years, my appetite has increased. I have been taking it for many years. My bones are not well and my spine and ribs are in pain. The doctor has said that it is the L-Thyroxine that is doing it. So today I didn't take it and my thinking isn't so bad. I hope staying off it will help my pain and the brain fog!

My recommendation is that you switch to Armour thyroid. I was so sick on Levo that I thought I was about to die. I fired my Endo and got another one who put me on Armour and, as I have written elsewhere, my symptoms disappeared within half an hour (after 2 1/2 years of feeling ill).
Basically you are probably T3 deficient but unless your doc is prepared to measure this you are never going to know. Keep reading and Googling, you will understand the whole thing eventually.

Re: Rosita (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

Don't stop taking this med cold turkey! You will have Major Problems! I did this yrs. ago with Levoxyl; because I ran out of it! After 3 days, I was ready for the loony bin! confused, heart palpitations, etc. I called my Pharmacy up and they told me they would give me 3 pills (not free of course) and that they'd call my Dr. over the fone and get a refill for me! They warned me NEVER to stop this Medication!!!

You should go to the book store and buy volume 1 and 2 of "Stop the thyroid madness" so that you can get off of that poison as soon as possible. I had my thyroid removed seven years ago. After surgery I was put on levothyroxine. I stayed on it for one month and stopped after I learned what that crap was doing to me.

Re: LAHs (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

I asked my former dr. for a script for armour; he had never heard of it! My insurance would not pay for it and the local phramacies didn't carry it!
NYState law has it you can't get a paper script! it has to be called or faxed in to your choice of a pharmacy! thanks to our gov.
