Can taking Allopurinol cause a diabetic to develop kidney problems?
Allopurinol has been known to cause kidney failure as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, kidney insufficiency, and confusion, according to FDA reports.
Ref: Medline Plus Allopurinol
However, diabetes and many other medications can also cause kidney problems, so there is really no way to say for sure what has caused kidney issues.
What was the doctor's opinion?
Carolyn, have those all been prescribed for him by his doctor? He should take what they have prescribed, and not make any changes, without their approval.
My father had a quadruple by-pass and kidney failure, should he continue taking allopurinol along with these medications:
coumadin, lipitor, lisinopil, metrplolol and pholso?
