Is There A Generic Alternative
UpdatedIs there a blood pressure medicine alternative to Benicar. I would like to find a cheaper alternative.
lisinopril/HCTZ (Prinzide®, Zestoretic®). Just found it today on the web.
Unfortunately there will not be a generic available until 2016 when the patent for this drug expires.
I just bought generic benicar. came from India... you can also get it from Austraila. and Canada. benicar is expencive... its worth it if it helps..I just hope it has all the active ingrediants, not a phony placebo.
To "Bill" regarding your posting on 10/10 and finding a generic Benicar overseas...have you had time to try this version out and is so, do you feel it is a viable substitute for the American manufactured version? I look forward to your reply and feedback!
Jerry, I am also looking for a great alternative to Benicar HCT. I was on this previously and it worked great for me, but since it so expensive, was prescribed Isinopril. Just got off the Isinopril as it caused such severe coughing that it caused blood vessels behind my eyes to burst. My husband and sister just stopped the Isinopril due to the coughing issue and none of us would recommend it. You can easily confirm this just by reading the responses of all the people who are adversely affected by it.
Two years ago I was looking for something less expensive, and my insurance company suggested an ACE inhibitor. This is a different class of drug than Benicar.....and it caused a horrible chronic cough for me. This lasted over a year until I realized that the cough was caused by the med. It then took another 6 months for it to go away. You should know this is a possibility before jumping into it...
My name is Tom and I stopped taking lisinopril after a week. I developed a dry cough. I dont know why doctors are prescribing this medication? This medication should be banned, in my opinion. I am taking Benicar for almost a year without any problem. But I can't afford 150 plus dollars a month for a month's supply. So, I am looking into alternative.
I also used to take lisinopril which was sold as prinivil, but the coughing was horrible, I felt as if my lungs were bleeding. This went on for months and I didn't know it was the medication causing it. The doctor put me on diovan, which worked very well, but it is not cheap either. My new insurance company would not cover diovan, so I am stuck with paying the high cost for Benicar.
John, I take Benicar and know how expensive it can get. I looked for alternatives but nothing quite works like Benicar. I did find a solution! Go to Benicar(dot)com and click the saving money link on the bottom left. Their program makes it SO MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE! Plus this is a program directly from the manufacturer of Benicar so there are no hoops to jump through. Hope this helps.
the generic "metalazone" is not on my insurance list, what would be a medical generic as a substitute.
The best substitute for Benicar HCT for me is Hyzaar!! Available in a generic!! No cough like the Lisinipril which I was also on... With luck it will be the best for you! I did my research!!
If lisinopril makes you cough contact your Doctor and tell them this could be used as a reason to have your insurance company cover Benicar for you. I know of plenty of people who use lisinopril and have no side effects so it is a good alternative when insurance will not cover Benicar
I took Sam's advice and went to Benicar.com. I was able to lower my copay to $25 a month. I called them, signed up, called the pharmacy with the numbers they gave me and DONE :)
Benicar 20 mg was working great for me. Because of the price, I asked to try Losartan, which is supposed to be similiar. My doctor prescribed 100 mg. I took one pill and was climbing the walls, with heart palpatations, too. I am wondering if the doseage was too strong. Speaking of Lisinopril, my husband could not take it because of the coughing. I don't dare take it with respitory issue.
Reputable Canadian pharmacies get the med from India and ship it to you from Europe or Singapore. Normally costs about $100 for 90 tabs. It takes about 3 weeks to get it after placing the order. The company I have used is Planet Drugs.
I am still taking Benicar, but am troubled by what I am reading about it causing stomach issues, in light of I started having reflux and stomach issues a couple of months ago. Anyone have any info on this? thx
lisinopril/HCT is not the same type of drug as Benicar HCT. I tried it, because it is cheaper and because of the side effects of Benicar, but as it is not a beta blocker, my lungs filled with fluid. I was coughing all the time.
what month in 2016.. I need it ASAP

Agreed. I had a horrible time with Lisinopril - the persistent cough drove me nuts.
Benecar prescription generic on the market now. Olmesartan-HTCZ. I've been taking for almost a month. 20-12.5 Good BP readings just like on brand name Benecar. Doc & my pharmacist said exact same active ingredients. Until 1/1 I'm in donut hole for my Medicare drug plan. Paid $55. Should be cheaper 1/1 when new drug year starts
Mylan generic replacement is in production as of 10/26/2016. But I believe it has not yet been released for prescription purposes or added to insurance formularies.
Why would u buy that and encourage others to do the same? You're not even sure yourself if it's the correct drug. NEVER buy drugs from a foreign country!
Benicar has always worked really well for me. Pharmacy changed me to the generic last month. My BP has been gradually going up. Today it's pretty bad, along with head and neck ache. Anyone else have problems with this new generic?
I take benicar and I in the donut hole ,so I just got 90 olmessartan-hctz 20-12.5mg ....I Pais 24.00 for 90 pills ..big difference. .just took one so I'll see ..hope it's as good as benicar. .
On Medicare but in donut hole till 1/1/17 so Benecar HCT is costing me about $170 till January. Then $40. Doc trying me on 2 generics Hydro...in the AM & Amlodipine in PM, but experiencing gradual swelling of lower limbs & it was bad last night. BP shot up this morning. Barely ok now. Waiting for P.A to call back! Soon I hope?
From what I am reading Oct 2016. A lot probably depends on if the manufacturer (Daiichi Sankyo) tries to fight it. I've seen this happen before and lawyers drag it out for several years.
True, I also have taken this discount directly from the manufacturer. Point to keep in mind is that the discount is effective only as long as you are covered by your employer insurance (as in my case). Once you retire and have to go on Medicare that discount directly from the manufacturer no longer is available. All the conditions are spelled out on the benicar.com website.
I found after extensive searching that october 2016 is soonest benicar patent expires. So sometime after that generics could become available. If company isnt bought out by another or formulation chnade to maintain patent
