While both are commonly used to treat drug addiction, Subutex only contains the opiate Buprenorphine. However, Suboxone couples Buprenorphine with Naloxone, to neutralize other narcotics and help prevent their abuse, while someone is being treated with it.
The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Suboxone is the preferred drug for treatment, unless someone is pregnant, or allergic to the Naloxone.
