Id say yes do and then id pray to god you have a painful rash form in your mouth so that your doctor finds out you are abusing them and so you are forced to stop abusing them because he kicks your pain med abusing ass out his office door....it is people that ask stupid questions like this and take their narcotic pain meds irresponibly that hurt the peoples chances that need it and will obv know you DO NOT chew on your fent patch unless you are abusing them or being irresponsibe. If the patch on your skin isnt working well enough tell your doctor....if it is and you just want to make yourself feel high then shame on you and learn to bake cookies or color in your coloring book. STOP ABUSING MEDICATIONS. PILLS ARE FOR YOUR MOUTH AND PATCHES ARE FOR YOUR SKIN!!! STOP ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS LIKE THIS OR WHETHER YOU CAN SMOKE THEM OR NOT!!!!!!!!! GRRRRR....moron!!

thats a lot of hostility in that answer. gawd, I hope you aren't raising kids. Your tolerance level is zero.

yeah, but you've gotta pass yourself off as a very large animal to get it! And most vets are pretty good about spotting a fake horse.

"fell off & was caught by the drain. I was so aggravated I just stuck it in my mouth."
HUH? What an odd reaction to aggravation! From the drain to your mouth?
Something just doesn't ring true there.

minigirl, I would say, go back to Dr. or get a new one...the patches are not agreeing with you. Not having medical background, I can't say the dosage/tolerance issue is of a concern. Just today I was perscribed the Fentanyl 25 MCG, after nearly 10 years on various pain meds (percosets to oxycodones). The patches take 24 hrs to take effect; but, if I start getting rashes, that'll be enough for me to stop.

After reading all 16 pages of replies, I've learned 2 things. One: When you reply, you have to refer to person you're replying to because it just goes in as comment on the last page!
Two: nobody mentioned fact that fair-haired, particularly redheads, feel pain an average of 25% more than other people. It's a fact resulting from studies, yet few doctors acknowledge/know this. I've been 'under-medicated' by most doctors, and now w/the abuse of 'pill mills', getting pain medication to be close to normal is just not possible. My goal is 'tolerable' pain. Just today got script for Fentanyl 25. Takes 24 hours to feel effect; so I can't respond to effectiveness; but, as to the 'cutting/chewing'...it's not always about abuse or getting the buzz...sometimes it's just about wanting maximum relief from the debilitating effects of chronic pain. I've got my 'list of ailments' and they're all legit/proved; but, getting a doctor to respond w/sufficient pain medication has become impossible. You don't have to go to 'the street'. You can go to another country via the web.

Yes I was and yes I have more pain then I bet any of you so called know it all's. I take this way cause this is the only way to get complete relieve but if you wear it you will still be in pain. I do not feel high - nor am I an addict. So you don't know me. You don't know my pain.
Walk in my shoes for one day with my pain and you would wanna kill yourself. That's all I have to say.

I'm so glad somebody (you) spoke true on this matter. It makes me so incredibly angry that people misuse medication especially pain medicine. The pain management offices and Drs now start treating everybody like their just drug seekers because of the people that abuse narcotics. We the people that actually have real pain need this medicine but we must first jump through hoops and prove ourselves innocent and legitametly really are in pain and in need of help. And to have the Gaul to get on one of these message boards and ask crap questions like how to chew a narcotic because you're not supposed to is comparable to a rapist asking if it's ok to wear condoms or not on a message board for people to post that have indeed been raped. So al of you addicts stick to your street drugs and ask your low life dealers these types of questions. Leave this for the important questions for people that actually need medicine.

@ sick of addicts, I so agree with you. I have been following this subject from the start. I'm on 75 mcg/hr, new one every 72 hrs with Percocet for break through pain.

What I don't "get" is no one saying that there is no such thing as "complete" pain relief. My pain Dr. explained this to me at the start of my treatment. For chronic pain you have to use a pain pump for max relief and then you're pretty much reduced to no life besides lying in bed and drooling on yourself. Anyone getting this type of pain meds know the most you hope for is "some" relief, enough to have some sort of life. Yes, it takes time when you start the patches for it to get in your system and start fooling your brain, the Dr gives you the bk up pills to get you through the start. These meds are not a "cure" as some seem to think, just a tool to get through the day. Yes they can be dangerous even when used correctly, and as to the stupid stuff I read on here, I can only shake my head. I have been on the same dose with spinal IV's and P.T. for 5 yrs. My goal is to stay at that dose although I am building a natural tolerance to the drugs. Addicts, on the other hand, always want more.

I have no sympathy for rec users, they have done nothing but make it harder for the legit people to get the help they need. There is a new and sure to kill you drug now hitting the streets that will get rid of a lot of the addicts. It's coming from Russia where it's said it was developed for just that purpose. It's called "krockodile" as it eats your flesh away and that is what your skin looks like before you croak. You can eat it, smoke it, IV it, with the same results. You will feel high, but there is no turning it back, no cure or way to reverse the effects once it gets a hold of you. So I dont think that our gov will do much about it, as I said it gets rid of a problem. The addicts will be getting a one way ticket. It's also very reasonably priced. Just Google Krockadile or Kroc and you will see what I mean.

Sweet dreams......

Are either of you aware that addiction is a disease not a choice? Whatever the addiction is to, doesn't matter, it's a defect in the mind that causes some to never feel they have enough of whatever they're addicted to.
yes, it's reflected in the treatment available to those that really need pain treatments and certainly does make it difficult for us; but, please, have we completely lost our compassion for those with illnesses other than our own? Is mental illness still considered a 'weakness'? We're all of the same species. We all have our flaws. Unless you're perfect, keep those stones in your pocket if you can't consider a more compassionate response.

Never better said Doc. I suffered some severe life changing injuries that led to many surgeries and very severe chronic pain. Eventually leading to my being prescribed fentanyal patch for pain. This medication is strong and very dangerous if misused. I am careful to ensure there aren't any damages to the patch as this medicine is many times more powerful than morphine, hydrocodone or oxycodone, diluaded, and the list goes on. If you OD on this stuff you may be way beyond help before help is called for you. This medication is prescribed usually to patients who are already opiod tolerant, so please listen to Doc Med and DON'T be stupid and take a chance where the odds greatly favor your own demise by the misuse of this medicine. Please think! Take care....

I've been going to a Pain Management Center for almost 11 years. In thebeginning I was on 5mg Pcocet 8 per day, plus 3 40mg Oxycontin per day. Eventually b'cuz of all the kids abusing the oxy the DEA cracked down & I was switched from the Oxy to the Fen Patch, a larger dose & changed it every 2 days instead of every 3 days. Eventually I lost my insurance & went to 8 percocet per & eventually 3 morphine 15mg per day. Then this past January the DEA was coming down hard again so I was cut to 4 Percocet a day & 3 Morphine 30mg. After all these years of being on a good combo they cut me way down b'cuz of the DEA. So last month I was in for my bi-monthly visit & they told me Now the DEA says I'm not allowed to be on the Percocet & Morphine! So they took away the Morphine & put me on a teeny tiny dose of Fent patch & I can only change it ever 3 days. I'm in severe pain, have withdrawl symptoms from going off the Morphine which Proves the damn patch isn't strong enough! So Hell Yeah I'm gonna wear the patch for 2 days & take it off & chew the rest of what's left in it! I'm so sick of being in pain b'cuz the DEA is cutting out the pain meds for those who really need it. I know it sounds like I used to be on a lot of pain meds but THEY WORKED & helped me lead a semi-normal life & still be able to work. I Never once abused my meds until I was desperate & forced to get some relief so I could work by chewing the 2 day old patch.

Gail. You understand that Fentanyl is 700 times stronger than Morphine. That is likely why the Dr started you on a small dose. Since the strength is not enough can you not go to the Dr and tell him? The Dr would likely increase it. I have been
wearing 150 mcg /hr for the past 7 years. It helps and I take a lighter pain med, oxycontin for breakthrough.

Gail, please ask your Dr to increase your Fentanyl patch instead of chewing them, please.

I'm prescribed the fentanyl 100 mcg/h patch. I wear it for 72 hours as prescribed, but I find after 48 hours it stops working, and when I remove it on the third day the is still a large amount of gel still in the patch. Is this normal? Or is my body just not absorbing it correctly? I just started 3 weeks ago and wanted to really give it a Chance before I mention it to him on my next appointment. Any opinions or advice?

Lisa...what do you mean by it stops working? Did your Dr start you on that dose? If so what did you take before the fentanyl for pain

When I remove the patches there i some product left on the patches. That is why proper use handling and disposal is important. What brand of Fentanyl do you use?

I would mention any concerns you have with your Dr. I have been wearing patches for almost 8 years now.
