I've been prescribed fentanyl 50mg pain patches and i was just wondering if it's okay to cut one in half an chew on it?

Because of such rampant abuse of OxyContin the FDA made the decision to not allow the drug to be made into a generic form. I guess the patch will be taken off the market next. The FDA is currently deciding if Lortab, Vicodin and the other hydrocodone drugs will be raised to a higher schedule and refills will not be allowed along with no phone or fax requests.
I have been on 100mcg of Fentynal for about 10 years. I am currently tapering off the medication to see where I stand with pain etc. I was also a police officer for 13 years and injured in the line of duty, hence early retirement. I thought I had about seen and heard of everything, but chewing a patch is just crazy. This drug was created for terminally ill cancer patients. How it became used for chronic pain, which I suffer from, I don't know. I don't care if a 1000 people said they chewed it and didn't die, it's crazy, crazy and desperate to do. Addiction is a Diease. People remember that. Don't feed this Diease with ideas of "safely" chewing these patches. THEY ARE STRONGER THAN MORPHINE!!!! A lot of people have given what I call very questionable advice. If you care, don't give them ways to make this drug easier to abuse. To dispose of it, your supposed to fold it in half and flush down the commode. Pets can die if they get ahold of a used patch. Be smart, don't start this horrifying practice and don't give out info on how to abuse this medication. A lot of "educated" people giving their two cents, but with the misspelled words and poor grammar I question their authenticity.

Jenny.....what you say is right.

The fact that drugs like Fentanyl may soon no longer be available is due to the abuse of the drugs, not that Dr's will not prescribe them.
When you go to the ER, signs are posted saying that narcotics will not be given. This is due to abuse.
What I would like to know is, would Dr's continue to prescribe Fentanyl to patients who are not using the drug properly. I doubt it
Why do people choose to risk their lives by not using the drug as directed when there are other choices that could make pain more tolerable
To say that one would not overdose by taking the drug in a way not recommended is ludicrous, it happens all the time to those who said, never happen to me I know what I am doing, I have researched done my homework...right!
I hope that medication is always going to be available for those who need it. It is sad that because people abuse meds those who need it are going to suffer.

OMGosh please do not (in my opinion) put a half of Fentanyl in your mouth. (mine are 50mg) When I was taking my Aunt S. to the Cardiologist at 11a.m; showering first, the humidity in the summer makes my patches not stay on as well. It fell off & was caught by the drain. I was so aggravated I just stuck it in my mouth. When we arrived at Dr. Williams in Auburn I became so sleepy and told Aunt S. I was going to the car to take a nap. Well when she got out there to go home she couldn't revive me. I was turning blue...the doctors and nurses rushed out there from the clinic and couldn't find a pulse; called 911 an ambulance came. The next thing I knew I was waking up in the emergency room "w/acute accidental opiate overdose." They used the paddles twice to bring me back. I learned my lesson for something I thought was so innocent. That is my story. And my opinion...

Deep South........Thank you for posting your experience. You may have saved someone's life.

I wear a 100 mcg/hr and a 25 mcg/hr patch. I am so careful on handling and disposing of them. The manufacturer told me there is enough residual medication in a used patch to seriously harm someone, possibly fataly injur a child.
All my grandchildren have been told about Nana's medication and that it is very dangerous. If they ever see one that possibly came off in the pool or anywhere to never touch it but to get an adult.
How sad that people can have no respect for themselves that they can put themselves in danger. Please get help, talk to your Dr or anyone. Do not use these patches in any other way than directed

I can't believe you would even admit to being a nurse after all the stupidity you posted on this comment!!! any nurse would know that it is possible to die from touching any transdermal medication if they have an unknown allergy to it. So if you want to critisize for bad advise, you should critisize YOURSELF!!!!!! it sounds to me like you are the one with an addiction problem and probably take your patients pain medication and make them suffer so you can get high!! people like you make me sick!!! I know I am commenting on a post that was done 3 yrs ago but I still had to comment and get this off my chest!!!!! Please do EVERYONE a favor and keep the comments to YOURSELF!!!!!!!!

Ur stupid aymee 25 mcg is 0.025 mg....I am a real nurse and I took math in school. There are 1000 mcg in a milligram. Please for gods sake do not listen to this stupid chick. Don't chew any patch, no amount is safe.

Mrbogit- I have five herniated discs in my cervical vertebrae, a pinched nerve that effects my left arm (which causes numbness yet is nice enough to give me severe pain with it), I also have a broken hip and a fractured femur right below the neck of the femur at the hip joint. Because of these injuries I will be in increasingly more pain as I get older. I am only 27 with the spine of a 40 year old due to a horrific MVA. Also, on top of my pain being excruciating, it also causes severe muscle spasms, which causes my pain to increase even more. There are days when I can't even get out of bed, let alone move around. I was on Vicodin 10s for 6-7 years and have built a tolerance to it, so recently my doctor prescribed me Percocet 10/325's up to 5 times a day. I take it with Baclofen, a muscle relaxer, which when taken together helps me function and be able to take care of myself and my home. I am a nurse and I need to be able to function and I have found that these help me. I may be called an addict but if I am so be it. I do not abuse my medications, I take them as directed, I don't buy or sell them on the streets, and I most definitely do not get any "high" from my medications. Well I hope this helps you in some way. I wish everyone on here good luck at getting through the pain that they are in. I don't condone any illegal activities to procure these medications, please find a doctor that will help you, look for one until you find one that will help you with your pain. I know that I am destined for a lifetime of pain and suffering due to my injuries. I wouldn't wish this situation on anyone, not even my worst enemies. My prayers are with all of you, whether you are "addicts" or not.

Hey Jenny, I'm a nurse and I don't know if ur from the USA or not but, hydrocodone was made a schedule 2 narcotic on January 13 of 2013. So now the dea has made it harder on real chronic pain patients but what really is causing trouble for the people who need the meds is the new ISTOP law which has just caused the whole government control over scripts to just explode...I don't want to bore you with the details, if ur interested in knowing more just google it or message me back. I hope this helps, this message is not intended to say ur stupid or anything, I just wanted to share some info that I am very knowledgable about.

People like you are the reason why the Death is. Making life Hell for sick disabled people living in chronic pain. If the medicine is a pach it is made to stick on your body. Not chew up. In Florida now you cannot even find a pharmacy to fill a legal prescription for pain medicine. And it because people like you chew the medicine and overdose and die. So thanks for making my life hell. And for that last post the DEA wants the FDA to move Hydrocodone To a scheduled 2 but It hasn't happened yet because a doctor Can not give you refills on a Scheduled 2 and thay are doing that now. But if the DEA Keeps Getting Their Way No Body Will Get Pain Medicine. In Florida It's Almost Impossible To Get A pharmacy To Fill A legal Prescription because of Fear from the DEA.

do you have trouble eating and having a bowl movement....im an addict and have been using K8s and fent. for a while. when I run out of the dilaudid I have to use the fent....and I cant eat at all...and feel full all the time...the sight of food makes me sick. If you could tell me if you have these same problems with the fent and any possible solutions?!?!?!?

Educate urself...please. there is a huge difference between being an addict and being dependent. Yes, sure your body builds up tolerance, but this does not make u an addict. There ar addicts who take the drug for the high who are no longer in pain etc.who will do anything to get the high....those who are dependent are dependent on the drug to relieve pain and make an attempt to live a normal life....look it up..Dependent vs Addict.....dependents don't seek highs, they seek relief....

I wish people like you would go to jail. Because of people like you it makes it harder for the sick disabled people living in chronic pain to get The medication They need. Please get some help with your addiction. And your supposed to take prescription medicine the way you doctor tells you to. So why don't you ask you doctor if you should eat a patch. Or snort a pill. Or smoke it. He will love to tell you a thing or two

Don't you worry about HOW ANYONE "Else", Bedides YOURSELF , takes THEIR Meds!! How other ppl take Their Meds has Nothing to do with IF other ppl get what They Need for Their Pain And IF by chance Your Dr will NOT give To you what Meds You Want = has Nothing to do with HOW others take theirs !!

Hey dope head if They were ment to be chewed on it would say so. I got a good idea why Don't you and him go eat a months supply i one day. The Only people that chew on fentanyl Is To Get High. And It's Problematic in the ER Room I work In Everyday Or night I'm working we Have So many People That Overdose from Not taking Medication the way It's supposed to be. So snort Your oxycontin chew on the fentanyl And hopefully when you OD We Can Save Your Life
