Is Atorvastatin ( Lipitor) 40 Mg Monthly Evaluation Prescrib (Top voted first)
UpdatedI was placed on Liptor 40 mg with refills for last 3 months last doctor visit 2 weeks ago was told to continue and come back for blood tests in December. When I went to get refill this month was told by pharmacy they had to wait for doctor approval to refill. I called doctor office and got refill to last until my next visit. My question is wouldn’t the doctor have told me that there’s a change in how he is prescribing medication to insure that I have enough between appointments.

This is a followup to my post. Apparently because of the holiday (Veterans), my prescription was not processed until 4 days after I called the doctor's office for refill. He didn't change prescription but made it a 90 day prescription with refills rather than a monthly refill. Again, I would like to know how does doctor determine how the Liptor is effecting cholestrol
If you are out of refills, the pharmacy will always require your doctor's approval, before they can fill it, again, for you. In some cases, if it is not a controlled substance and is a medication that is life-sustaining, they can give you a few days worth to get you through, until your doctor authorizes a full refill, but there is nothing else your pharmacy can do.
Additionally, your doctor may not always remember how many fills you have left, so it is best to remind them how much you have left, when you are in for your appointments. Sometimes, doctors are very busy, so they may not always remember every detail about each individual patient.
As to determining how it is affecting your cholesterol, that would usually be through the blood work that your doctor wants you to have done next month.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle pain.
I hope I don't seem to be short with you, or rude. I am just trying to explain how things work with your pharmacy and doctor's office. For example, I am a heart patient, and if I run out, since my medications are life-sustaining, the pharmacy will usually give me about 3 days worth, until my Cardiologist contacts them, confirms a refill, and knows I have set up an appointment. I usually try to avoid such a scenario and contact his office, or set up an appointment, before I am out.
And if there is a holiday coming up, always plan ahead by calling or contacting your pharmacy early!!! Doctors are almost always crazy busy on a holiday, because everyone wants to get in, before that day.
How high was your cholesterol? Have you also made dietary changes?

Thanks for your input, I was just surprised that the first prescription had been written, without a refill pass 90 days, as I always discuss prescriptions with doctor at every appointment ( he makes me come in every 3 months to check). I purposely ask him if he is checking the different levels of LDL (good versus bad). After listening to several comments, I think the office personnel had forgotten to verify how the prescription was to be set up because of the timings between my appointment and refill ( both fell near holidays Halloween and Veterans with Election Day in between). I figured things worked on a 24/7 day but doctors office and pharmacy work on business day setup which eliminates a bunch of days.
I am leery of taking medication especially if there’s potential side effects. I didn’t know until recently that there’s a family tendency towards high blood pressure and cholesterol problems—I was only aware of heart conditions and chance of thyroid problems. I am physically more fit than my mother was, more like my father in that respect. But he had the high blood pressure and cholesterol problems and she had the heart, thyroid and diabetes type 2, so you see I am not sure ?? where to focus to maintain my health.
I am trying to lose about 10% of weight by keeping active ( daily walks standing more than sitting, food diary) . I was concerned about using a cholesterol medication especially since of the side effects of development of type 2 diabetes and heart problems but hopefully if I lose the weight as I am to do , it should help avoid that. I have to work again my body’s tendency to gain weight. I can’t really do high impact exercises because of the osteoarthritis in my knees but the walking helps to unstiff the joints and I move past the pain.
