Is Mylan Lorazepam Discontinued? (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My pharmacy told me that they can't buy mylan any more and they do not know if it is discontinued or not.

Since Qualitest lorazepam was discontinued, Mylan is the only lorazepam that works (less effective than Qualitest) but works with less side effects than others (Watson, leading pharma, actavis: don't work causing serious side effects).

Any alternatives, or another generic lorazepam that works ok? Lorazepam is the only sedative that works for me for anxiety and stiffness due to side effects of levothyroxine. Other medicine such as clonazepam, alprazolam (xanax), cymbalta, zoloft, lexapro, etc do not work.

Lol... I hear you Richard. That was all stuff I knew as well. As in the Watson business. I'm not getting any younger myself. Ha!

Re: Doc21 (# 204) Expand Referenced Message

Wyeth kept making it for Biovail for a while, even after selling the marketing rights. I think in Pennsylvania. Then the production moved to Germany, where it was made for Biovail (which became Bausch somewhere around this time) where it was made for them by Meda (which became a subsidiary of Mylan, and Mylan no longer exists as a company now). Now it's made in-house by Bausch in Manitoba, Canada. Same imprint and formula I suppose, but the manufacturing site has changed a number of times.

Bausch is one of the most unethical companies on Earth.

Lol- make that "Watson", not Wyeth......not sure why I have "Wyeth" on the brain of late...apparently for a few posts I've been saying "Wyeth" when I meant "Watson"....senior moments...

Re: Doc21 (# 204) Expand Referenced Message

My Actavis still reads "Wyeth"...and all the info I stated was not my opinion, it was stated to me by a reputable pharmacist who has been in the business for over 25 years and confirmed by a fellow pharmacist who has been so internationally for 3 decades.

Re: Richard H (# 202) Expand Referenced Message

That's not correct. Wyeth sold Ativan to Biovail around 2004/05. They turned it into a generic. They kept the same mold. They removed Wyeth on the back and replaced it with BP. They sold it to Bausch which kept it the same. The formula has never been the same since Biovail. And quite frankly Aurobindo works better then brand. Leading has had different formula since last year. If you get the right one it works relatively well. Aurobindo is the brand to find these days hands down. Peace y'all!

There is a company that will test generic medications and takes input from patients on which they should test. They have been involved in finding some of the biggest medication problems recently (like with Zantac and metformin).

You can request they look into lorazepam here:

Actually...it was the Wyeth brand that was sold to Teva....now marketed as "Actavis"...Teva kept the molds- thats why you still see 'Wyeth' imprinted on their Actavis lorazepam......this occurred back in 2013 or so according to my pharmacist.

The Actavis brand was sold to Teva. They are keeping the Actavis name but are really owned by Teva.

Re: Marcus (# 195) Expand Referenced Message

My Dr wrote for name brand and the price was outrageous. Even with an approved pre authorization the co pay was still over a $1000. Are they really that much better?

I was just thinking, as I was trying to very quickly swallow my $33 Ativan tablet before it melted on me to make sure it got down, that there has got to be some way to incentivize one generic manufacturer to make a decent lorazepam product.

So, I thought why not go to mylan.com and just write a nice note. I know it probably won't help, but why not? It's the middle of the night, and I can't sleep, so why not?

Well I went to Mylan.com and found out Mylan no longer exists and is part of some space-age sounding monstrosity called Viatris.

What is it with pharmaceutical companies constantly buying each other?

Here's what they say:

"Mylan is now part of Viatris, a new global healthcare company committed to empowering people to live healthier at every stage of life. We encourage you to learn more about our commitment to increasing access to quality medicines for patients when and where they need them."

I'm sure.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else on the brand name (Bausch/Valeant) noticed that the tablets sometimes almost instantly melt? I noticed this both when they were made in Germany and now also with the Canadian made.

I have oropharyngeal dysphagia, and you would think fast dissolving would be easier to swallow, but it's actually not. And it makes me wonder if I'm getting it all down.

I had batches where they stayed hard no matter how long I left them in my mouth and the ones like now where it's melting as soon as it hits my tongue before I can get water, and I swallow a slurry. (I swallow a slurry in a hurry.)

To be clear, these are not sublingual. There are no sublingual forms available in the US. It just seems to be a variation. I was actually looking at getting gel caps to put them in because with my dysphagia I get smaller particles stuck on my upper esophagus and have to clear my throat constantly. Harder normal tablets I do fine with.

Re: Marcus (# 193) Expand Referenced Message

When Teva bought Watson....they also bought the molds, that's why you still see the 'watson' imprint. Unfortunately, they didn't keep the same formula...Teva markets it in my area as Actavis.....in New Jersey.

Re: Marcus (# 192) Expand Referenced Message

I meant to say Qualitest instead of Vintage. I think they were the same thing.

And actually I did well on the original Watson, back when it was made in California. Watson got bought so many times over I can't remember what happened to it. I know there are still some pills that have the Watson imprint, but it's not the same thing.

Can you imagine any other industry doing this? This is just a stock market game, like they're selling pork belly commodities or something.

We're the ones who feel it because these are neurologic agents. It probably exists across all pharmaceuticals but would be less noticeable for a lot of other issues.

Re: Henry (# 191) Expand Referenced Message

The tablets look identical.

Please don't take my word for it that it's worse, though. It may work just as well. People who know me think I am way too sensitive to these things and notice things other people wouldn't. So I could be wrong or it could be other factors going on in my life.

I agree about Bausch, though.

I did fine on Vintage and on Mylan. And they cost less per bottle than Bausch does per pill.

Re: Marcus (# 189) Expand Referenced Message

Marcus is there any difference in the appearance of the German vs Canadian made? Different markings or maybe slightly different color? I hate surprises and my CVS pharmacy are such jerks to deal with I won't bother asking them. Thanks

Re: Marcus (# 189) Expand Referenced Message

Oh sh@t! I take the brand (Bausch) but they don't dispense in mauf bottles. I haven't noticed a change yet but that could very well be because warehouses have a lot of stock (2mg tab). Thanks for the heads up, that REALLY sucks to hear. Bausch are such greedy aholes! They charge sooo much for the brand and now reported its no better than the 2¢ generics. I hate corporations.

Re: Marcus (# 188) Expand Referenced Message

I've been having some difficulty since they switched the name brand over to the Canadian made manufacturing site. Not sure if you all get yours in a manufacturer's bottle like I do, but it's been made in Canada since my last fill. Before that it was made in Germany.

I've been having withdrawal symptoms and had to take extra medication for a while and increased my beta blocker. I had some of the German left and used up what I had left for two weeks, and during that time didn't need any extra and was on my normal dose of beta blocker.

Been back on the Canadian manufactured again and back to needing extra beta blocker and having to take an extra dose of the Ativan which doesn't even seem to help.
