Is Depakote The Same As Neurontin?

Is depakote similar to neurontin? Can an individual just abruptly stop taking this mood stabilizer because they feel they don't need it without replacing it with something else? Does this cause weight gain?

They both treat the same types of conditions and no, you shouldn't stop either one abruptly, because it could create the risk of seizures.

Stopping one doesn't usually cause weight gain, but it can be a side effect of taking them. Other side effects may include nausea, mood swings and dry mouth.

Just needing to know if Depakote and Neurontin work basically the same? I realize neither should be stopped abruptly. But, my question is, do they both work in the same ways?

These are two different compounds that work in two entirely different ways. Neurontin works on nerve pain for a variety of different diseases. Depakote was given to me for migraine and cluster headaches. Both work somewhat on depression. Look them up on the Internet for complete details. What I have found over the past 20 years is that medication is very often prescribed off label and used in combination with other drugs to help with various diseases that traditional medications don't help. I never take any medication without throughly researching it completely with side effects and drug interactions fully understood. If you see different doctors please be honest with them and tell them every drug you take even otc as well as vitamins and minerals. In this day and age everyone must become an educated consumer. It's all out there on the Internet and easy to find. Best of luck.

I have taken both medications as mood stabilizers for bipolar 1. Their original uses were for seizure control.

Hello my name is Andy. I have non stop cramps and spasming from my hips to my toes. I have CMT and have been taking Tegretol for 14 years. For the last year it's not working right and I have to take massive doses, even up to 13 200 mg pills a day every single day. I'm sick and intoxicated. Are there any pills that are similar to Tegretol that would help CMT? I have no quality of life. I am high all the time and very sick just so that I can use half of my body and move my legs and muscles and walk. I don't know what to do. I need a new drug.
