Amitriptyline is not a narcotic, nor is it subject to the Controlled Substances Act. It is an antidepressant. Amitriptyline is a fairly safe drug although it can (and usually does) cause EXTREME drowsiness. It should not be taken before driving, etc until you know how it will effect you. Most people continue to become drowsy after taking it so they take it before bedtime. The other most common side effect is constipation.

My doctor prescribed me Amitriptylin 25 MG it was not for depression, it was for a burning sensation that Ive been having due to some nerve problems , it worked very well for about two weeks, after two weeks I returned to the doctor and he upped my dose to 50mg. (but had them dispensed in 25 mg.tablets) He informed me that he had started me on a low dose. Well that seemed to work for about 3 weeks. I called my doctor today I was burning again, he called me in another perscribtion upping my dose to 100mg. My question is if the 100mg is to strong will the pharmacy still have my old prescribtion on file..or did this new one eliminate my old one?

I'M BI POLAR AND HAVE BEEN TAKING 100 TO 150 MGS SINCE 1998. I HATE THE HANGOVER. I WAS ABLE TO STOP TAKING THEM WHEN MY SHRINK SUGGESTED CANNABIS INSTEAD. I STOPPED SMOKING WHEN I WAS 27 BECAUSE IT MADE ME PARANOID. I TRIED IT AGAIN WHEN I WAS 43 UNDER CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT WITH MY SHRINK AND IT WORKED SO WELL I GAVE UP AMITRIPTYLINE. NEVER FELT HUNG OVER AND WOKE UP REFRESHED. WHEN CANNABIS WAS CHEAP FOR TWO YEARS BUT AT $10 A GRAM I HAD TO GO BACK AND HATED IT. I SLEEP BUT I WAKE HUNG OVER. SO I MOVED TO LAS VEGAS BECAUSE IT IS A 24 HOUR CITY. BUT EVEN THOUGH I BOUGHT A CONDO OUT RIGHT FOR CASH, THE F***ING D.M.V. ALWAYS HAS AN EXCUSE TO DENY MY CHANGE OF STATE SO I PAY MORE FOR THE CANNABIS AS AN OUT OF STATE CARD. BUT I, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE CAN'T WAIT FOR COMPLETE LEGALIZATION IN NOVEMBER. IT'S 3:07 AM SO I'LL HAVE TO TAKE TWO FOR A FEW HOURS OF SLEEP.

It seems like it would have been easier to call the pharmacy and ask them, rather than asking ppl online who don't know you and what other meds your taking.

I was given Elavil 6 weeks ago for chronic migraine. I had a migraine every single day. They would put me down for hours on end. The most excruciating pain I've ever had. A power drill to my temple would've felt better. But a neurologist put me on Elavil and I've only had a hand full of bad headaches since I've started the med. This medicine gave me my life back.

I have been on amitriptyline for at least 30 years for depression and I tried taking opiates to elevate my mood....which it did. During this time I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and I still continue to use it very often. I’m afraid if there is an addiction there I don’t want any help for it. So I am taking high doses of amitriptyline, rheumatoid medications and some cannabis (self-medicating). This is just me. I have come through big stress issues too which cannabis has been able to carry me through too, so I don’t think that’s there is any issue about opiates being harmful in any way. Hope this helps someone.

Hi David, it also one of the most lethal anti depressants. Overdoses and death are more common than you think. I know. My daughter just died from this overdose....
They have a cut off point, past which, saving is impossible.
