Invokana - Rebound Effect On Blood Sugar Levels

I took Invokana (100mg) for 1 year and have now stopped. My FBS is now over 240, where it had been 150-160 in the past year or so (without Invokana). My readings are above 200 all day, regardless of my food intake. I take 1g of Metformin twice a day and 10mg Glipizide twice a day and still have these numbers. I'm concerned that the Invokana use over the past year has biased my system to be strongly diabetic whereas before it was much less so. I realize it's been a year and my condition could have changed while taking the Invokana but there seems to be a rebound effect. Has anyone experienced a blood sugar rebound effect after stopping Invokana? Thanks.

Why did you stop the Invokana?

The FDA does warn that it can be normal to have rebound issues, when you stop such a medication suddenly, so that may be why you are experiencing higher blood sugar levels than you were, before.

Has anything else changed in your medication regimen, your diet, or activity levels?

If you're diabetic, you are diabetic, nothing will 'bias' your system. Your disease may worsen with time, though.

When the 1 year discount card benefit expired, the cost per month was $560 which
I couldn't afford. I'm currently paying over $10K/yr for health premiums and have an
average of $500/mo med cost already so I just couldn't afford it. Insurance wouldn't pay for the invokana, etc.

I managed to get a slight discount going and had my endo write a prescription for 300/mg instead of 100/mg (same price) and I cut the 300s into thirds. So I've managed to make it marginally affordable.

Back on the invokana and blood sugar is now more under control.

Still very concerned about possible organ damage from long-term use.

Invokana is such a new drug that no one really knows what's in store for long-term users.

I do not mean this in any negative way what so ever. I will give a short background on myself. I drove trucks for 10yrs or so thus lack of exercise and poor eating habits. My weight went to around 340 pounds. In high school I was 71 & 3/4" now 69 not sure what my height was in the 90s but I suffered from an injury on the job... Thus doctors became a lifesaving intrusion in my life... After surgery & what not my a1c was around 8.0 triglycerides in 900's bad cholesterol near 500 good about 25.... I suffer major chronic pain, so walking and hard workouts were impossible.... Was on nearly 15 meds a day not counting pain meds...This lasted nearly 5 years but I started eating better and less (still at 285 seems I hit a wall) but no longer take any medications other than pain meds....Just had blood work done. My a1c 5.7, bad cholesterol 212, triglycerides 221..... Not great numbers. I still have ways to go. Some days I only eat 2 sandwiches a day. I cut out processed lunch meat, cut back on dairy and went back to regular soda pop. Diet sweeteners are not good, soda is a weakness for me. I try not to have more than 24oz a day (used to drink at least 4 liters) and I had a diabetic nutritionist tell the group I was in there is nothing to be done, your body is broke and you will always need the meds (of course we debated that). A good motivator is to tell me I cant do something..... Anyway I did find an exercise outlet. I was lead to a deal on a recumbent bike. It was the best thing as I could ride it without aggravating my pain to an intolerable level. It has 21 speeds so not a lot of pressure on my knees, back, ankles, nor shoulders as it has under seat steering....There are trails close to the areas I live in san antonio. The riverwalk is great and rails and trails are in a lot of areas. Search them to check your area... But if I can get my issues in a reasonable range (with gods guidance) not that it matters but I am in my early 60s... I think if you can just find a way to exercise safely and work on your intake I know you can do it but please be careful and discuss your ideas with your doctor(s).... The only 1 that can fix anyone is themselves.... Sorry I went on and on but I didnt want it to sound like I was preaching as thats the last thing we need. I will congratulate you now for your future improvement - good job and congratulations....
