Information On Taking Morphine For Back Pain (Top voted first)

Updated

I am 75 years old. I have had several back surgeries. I have a pain pump, but now I am also on 15mg morphine tablets every 4 hrs as needed. Would it be easier on your system if you were to split the 15mg and take 7 and a half milligrams every 2 hours?

I had surgery On Friday May 13, 2017. I having problems with my pain pump, this is my 4th pump. in about December of 2015 my pump came loose and was turning in my side, they waited till Oct 2015 because my pain was so bad. they re anchored the pump and the tip of the catheter was partially plugged. I was doing good, but 5 weeks later the pump came loose again. After 3 months my pain level was always at 8 to 10 level, that's why I was on the morphine. Friday they removed the pain pump from my right side, and put a new one in my left side, and put in a new catheter. Today I went to get my dressings changed, they increase the Morphine a little at a time. After the surgery, stayed on a half of the 15 mg 4 times a day, today they changed it to 3 times a day. I go back again Thursday for another dressing change and they will adjust the pump and oral meds again. The pain is getting a little better better then it was. I was cut on both sides and the middle of my back for the catheter. So far I'm happy, I hope I get better and don't have to take oral pain meds. I retired 10 years ago, and the only thing I took was Tylenol once in a while. Right now I'm hoping for the best. I'll let you know how this works after i'm all healed.
Take care & God Bless

There really isn't much difference between the pump and oral pain medications, other than the ones via the pump don't affect your stomach like the oral medications.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

I was on 3 oxycodones hcl ir 30mg, but this past march I was released by breaking contract. First I failed a U/A. Then the pain clinic advised my psychiatrist to stop prescribing all my meds including clonazepam 2 mg 2x daily. Of course I had to get some. I'm 61 and didn't want to have a seizure or heart attack. So by the next U/A since it was no longer prescribed I was booted out. Most people would not chance their life to stay at a pain clinic. So as u can see I was sort of forced out after the first failure. Although after the first failure I was cross examined by an addiction specialist psychiatrist which stated, "continue to serve him his meds, just keep eye on him. He doesn't appear to have an addictive personality". Nonetheless my psychiatrist got scared anyway regardless and was scared to continue to prescribe thanks to the pain clinic. Now it is just about impossible to find another pain clinic with the meds that did not make me tired and really worked. I admit to making 1 mistake but the contract does not say they will strong arm any other doctor to stop prescribing. Am I supposed to get a lawyer over this? Everything was fine till this new intern started making an issue about the clonazepam. I never smoked and i don't drink but now i'm painted out to be this crazed junkie. Never went for pills early or anything like that. Any suggestions?
