Indopril
UpdatedI am taking Indopril once a day as a preventative treatment as I am a type 2 Diabetic. I have normally low blood pressure anyway which is genetic in my family. I now find it almost impossible to attain an erection since I started to take these tablets. My ballance when driving also seems to be effected. Are these common side effects?

Indopril contains a derivative of Perindopril, which is an ACE inhibitor and it really makes no sense for you to be on it, if your blood pressure is normally low.
Yes, it can cause erectile dysfunction and the balance issue might be due to your blood pressure dropping too low.

Have you talked to your doctor about this?
What dosage do they have you on?
Have you considered getting a second opinion?
Thank you very much for your reply, it confirms what I was thinking. My doctor claims that as a type 2 diabetic, I need to be on it to protect my kidneys.
To protect your kidneys?
That is a new one. I'm not a doctor, but it really makes no sense to prescribe another medication, with the risks that can be associated with them, to try to protect someone's kidneys. Especially since most medications can cause harm to the organs, with long-term use.
And if you read our monograph page here:
https://rxchat.com/wiki/Perindopril/
You'll see that there is nothing listed there about its being approved for use to prevent kidney problems, it is actually contraindicated in those that already have renal issues.
Are you sure that's why he prescribed it?
I think you definitely need to read over the drug information and discuss it with him. Perhaps there is some research or something that he can show you, which gives him basis for this, that I am not aware of.
Thanks for the info. This tablet seems to be causing me all sorts of problems but having discussed it many times with my doctor and diabetes specialist, they both confirm that I need to be on it to protect my kidneys.
Sid, there are other medications in this same drug class, so please don't let them force you to stay on one that is causing you problems.
There are others that cause less side effects, which aren't as problematic. If they insist you stay on one and you are willing to do that, then talk to them about using a different medication. You can learn more about them and what is available here:

Like I said, I am not a doctor, but my ex husband is diabetic and they have never worried about putting him on a BP med to protect his kidneys. I also know several other people that are diabetic and this has never been done.
Do you have some existing kidney problem?
