I haven't been taking propranolol for very long now, maybe 3 months on a very intermittent basis, (twice a month, except for the first few weeks where I was taking maybe 2 a day on days where I felt particularly anxious with a racing heartbeat). They have helped significantly with my anxiety but am only recently starting to notice my hair falling out in small but concerning amounts every morning especially and getting a very itchy scalp and dandruff which I have never really suffered with. I'm only 20 so the chances of it being caused by anything else are quit slim considering I live a relatively stress free life currently. Definitely going to stop taking propranolol and find an alternative that doesn't have these side affects.
My hair is falling out n I’ve gained quite a bit of weight. Hating the side effects
Hair def came out back down to 30 mg from 180 Hair came back!!! Water weight it goes away
Re: lily (# 5)
I am also on the 20 mg twice a day and my hair used to be thick and long now it’s always tangled and falls out in clumps after I shower. I’ve also gained quite a bit of weight while using this medication.
No significant weight gain. Stopped propranolol about 8 weeks ago but have not seen any improvement to my thinning hair. Am now using REGAINE FOR WOMEN 5% as I’m desperately trying to improve my thinning hair.
I stopped taking propranolol about 4 mos ago. My hair has stopped falling out but it is still very thin. When did you notice your hair start growing back.
Re: Teri (# 60)
Hi, I was on 180 mg down to 30 my hair came back after losing 16 inches! Started sugar bear gummies and my hair came back
Re: Maryella (# 12)
Sure hope it’s reversible. My bangs are thin and scalp shows. I’m on 40mg for heart racing. Recently I was away from home and noticed heart racing. Thought I was dehydrated. Realized I hadn’t taken medication for several days. Immediately got better with just one dose. But recently I googled meds that cause hair loss and propranolol was on the list. I will wean off and hopefully get my bangs back. I will post results.
Hi there
Since my last post I’ve stopped taking propranolol but as yet I haven’t seen any signs of hair regrowth yet. I’ve now discovered that the other drug I’m on which is Dosulepin causes hair loss too which I’m trying to wean myself off - it’s day 5 so early days too. It’s really distressing that both these drugs which really work cause some distressing side effects - some of which I can put up with but not sure I can deal with hair loss. Not sure whether it’s the cause if my weight gain or just getting older , eating more and because of anxiety and depression not be so active. I’ve been off propranolol for 3 weeks now and trying to deal with my anxiety without meds which is hard. I’m going back to doc to see if there are any other meds that deal with anxiety - that doesn’t cause hair loss.
Re: Thinning curls (# 8)
OMG! I am 51 and have been on propranolol for 5 yrs for migraine and hypertension. I noticed slight thinning over the last few years. Most recently it has gotten progressively worse. Thought it was the water pill I’m on or the stress I’ve been experiencing. I decided to google side effects of propanol..... and there it is Hair loss! It’s not even listed on the envelope of the med. it’s been a lifesaver for my migraines but time to find something else.
Very similar case as “Magic”, 25 y/o male on propranolol on an as-needed basis. Maybe used one or two pills a month for about two years. Stopped mid August 2017 because the back of my head was noticeably thinning. I thought mostly it was MPB, but my father had full thick hair.
What tipped me as unusual, but something that I haven’t yet seen here, is my scalp had been itching where it was thinning. I remember when I began the drug, that was concurrent with onset scalp itchiness. Didn’t think anything of it, but just got head and shoulders and brushed it off.
I guess after two years, the effects just set in- more thinning and pretty bad itchiness- and I decided to try to make do without the drug.
After five months off propranolol, my hair has definitely improved. Itchiness- down, hair- thicker, less frizzy, etc. Before, any time I’d simply TOUCH my hair, some came out. Very frustrating. Combing the hair, same deal. Now? Much stronger, and healthier, but not 100%. I’ve read you need to give it three to 10 months to get back to normal.
As for getting off propranolol, it is crucial to improve your diet and exercise. Breathing techniques help quell my nerves as well.
I had been taking Atenolol and it was reformulated and my pharmacy could no longer provide it at the same price. So my doc prescribed propranolol 30 mg in the am withi. 2 weeks I've lose 20% of my hair. My hair is everywhere clogging up the shower drain filled up in the vacuum cleaner bar and I cry as I cut it free. It's in the food I cooked for Thanksgiving & Christmas even though I put on a scarf when I took down the Christmas tree I found it on the branches. I call my doctors office and they told me it must be my nerves. No help! I have thyroid issues and take 2 types of thyroid mess but was assured my THS is just slightly off. I'm lost.

My hair continues to fall out for a few months after stopping. At around 2 months of stopping, I noticed it fell out really easily for a few days to a week, during that week if I ran my hand through my hair clumps would come out. Once that subsided, my hair stopped falling out and has been looking a lot healthier and darker, id still say it is not as thick as it was (probably bc not all the hairs have grown back, yet...?) but it looks a lot better than it did 4 months ago and is a lot stronger now.
Re: Regina (# 17)
How is your hair now? Did it regrow after stopping propanolol
Re: Magic (# 37)
Is your hair still falling out after stopping?
I was on 10 mg for 2 months and I stopped 20 days ago and my hair is still falling out like crazy
Re: jodi143 (# 29)
Me too
I was on 10 mg for 2.5 months and I stopped it 20 days ago and my hair is still falling out dramatically
Hey Everyone! Here is a follow up to my journey coming off Propranolol, sorry for late update as I said I'd post, but here it is!
At about 2 months off propranolol I noticed my hair started falling out more, I actually ran my hand through it and clumps came out. This was odd to me and made me really nervous, I hoped it was part of the hair growth cycle pushing out the older hairs for newer, healthier ones. This lasted for a few days and then the shedding subsided.
Since coming off of Propranolol on September 13th, my hair has started to look a lot healthier I grew it out and recently cut it shorter and though it still appears thin, I feel it is stronger and healthier. Still not to the point that it was, the thickness still hasn't returned, but it looks better than it did when I was on the medication. Coming up on January 13th 2018 I will have been off the medication for 4 full months.
As for my hair program, I wash my hair with Nioxin products once per week. I take GNC Ultranourish Hair for men daily, vitamin methyl B12 daily, and a keratin/collagen product by Resvitale called Beauty 3. I'd like to start increasing my protein intake with more shakes and increase my omega 3 content with fish oil and see if that helps make the hair healthier as well.
Re: Diddyp (# 49)
Hi I've been on them for two years now and my hair was so thick and long, now it extremely dry brittle, falling out in clumps, I now only take ten to twenty mg, my hair used to be so healthy! I don't know if there is a alternative! Doctor never told me side affect were so bad! It should be off market! I don't take on a daily basis now! Soon as you stop taking the anxiety comes back! This is just awful!
I’ve been on propranolol for about 4 years. Although I’m not taking them daily I’ve noticed during the last 2 months my hair is noticeably thinning all over the crown. It’s really distressing. I’m hoping my hair regains it’s thickness and returns to normal. I’m going to stop this medication and ask for something different. My dose is 10mg twice a day. But I try to manage on 10g. Doctors never tell you that hair loss is a common side effect of propranolol. Has anyone stopped this medication and noticed that their hair has grown back ?
