I Want To Stop Nifedipine Today.

I'm on nifedipine extended release 30mg and losartan extended release.I have hyper.now I am having hypo.64 over 48 I keep feeling my heart beating from the nifedipine I want to stop it immediatly I told the dr. I'm feeling my heart beat fast and when it does I am getting hypo now ...when I told her about my heart pounding a year ago the P.A.saidvit was normal to bring down my b/p.
I was eating garlic lemon honey salt just to bring up my b/p I don't want to take this today,can I stop it and keep monitoring my b/p constantly like I have been doing?
Please help me, I don't like this feeling and being hypo and hyper as I just want to stay on losartan 100mg.

Wow, Irene! I am so very sorry. That's horrible, I've had that happen with some medications in the past myself and I know it can be miserable and the accelerated heart rate can be terrifying.

The first thing I'd like to state is that no one can force you to continue taking any given medication. In the U.S., it is your right to stop taking anything that you feel is not working for you. The only exceptions are when someone is of questionable mental status and is under court order to take their medications. I am not a doctor, so I can't tell you to stop taking anything, but I can tell you that the final decision is ultimately up to you.

What type of doctor have you been seeing? Just a PCP, or a specialist? It is also your right to see a different doctor, if you feel it necessary. A doctor can drop you as a patient, at any given time, and you are also able to fire them, or get a second opinion. Just as an example concerning my medical issues, since I am a heart and blood pressure patient, my PCP will not touch the medications my cardiologist has prescribed, though she will contact them if she feels there is a problem, so they can handle it.... and conversely, my cardiologist doesn't touch any medications prescribed by my PCP, they both respect each other's specialties.

Have you ever consulted a cardiologist?

As to the elevated heart rate, that can happen if your blood pressure is dropping too low, because it can cause your heart to have to work much harder than normal to pump blood throughout your body. 64/48 is very low blood pressure. What times of day have you been getting such low readings? Have you experienced any other symptoms of low blood pressure, such as dizziness, drowsiness, trouble breathing, or fainting?

As to constant monitoring, how often are you checking it? There are times that checking it too closely to a prior check can also affect the readings, so you do need to allow for certain time intervals, in between checks.

When you feel your heart pounding, have you ever checked to see what your heart rate is?

Sometimes, we may feel it's pounding, but it could just be palpitations, which can be a side effect of many medications, according to FDA reports, but feeling them doesn't always mean we do have an accelerated heart rate. The first time it happened to me, I was very scared and went to the ER, only to discover that all was fine. Palpitations can also occur due to dehydration. How much fluid do you take in each day?

In many cases, multiple medications are prescribed to help bring someone's blood pressure down as fast and safely as possible, then as it lowers to more normal levels, the dosages are usually adjusted, or medications eliminated, as needed. I had full congestive heart failure, when I first got out of the hospital I was taking A LOT of medications, 43 pills a day to be precise, but as I became more stable, my blood pressure started dropping too low and medications were slowly changed, or eliminated, as appropriate. It took awhile, but I am now down to just 5 pills a day for maintenance, along with a healthy diet, exercise, and watching my fluid intake. (One of which is Losartan for heart function.)

As I have already stated, you are freely allowed to see a different doctor, or get a second opinion... and anyone with high blood pressure or other cardiac issues should always feel free to consult another PCP, or cardiologist.

On nifedipine 30 mg once a day extended release for 13 days. Only experienced headaches hand shaking and throbbing of my head with pressure. On Day 13 I began feeling tightness and chest pains off and on. I went to the ER they insisted it wasn’t the Nifedipine although it could be—but gave me lidocaine patch and aspirin and Tyelonol and told me it was ok to stop the Nifedipine until I could consult my pc doctor. Did not take it last night-had intense chest pains off and on all day that we’re very different from the ones I had yesterday. Is this related to withdrawal? There is no way to taper off of this drug since the lowest dose is 30 mg of the extended release. If this is a symptom of stopping this medication, how long will these pains last? Does anyone know the withdrawal timeline?
