I M Confused And Need Help With What I Need To Do....

Please help! I was prescribed OxyContin 40mg at first 1 every 12 hrs. After about 1-1/2 yrs the dr upped my dose to 40 mg 1 every 6 hrs due to the medication not helping with my pain as much as before. So the drs answer was to "increase the frequency of the medication/ double it!) and this took me quite a while to get use to the drugged feeling caused by the increase but eventually I did. The prescribing dr left the practice after about 2yrs. Apparently now I'm learning this prescribing history is why! However I have never been told this until yesterday! Anyway, Then another dr from the same practice kept prescribing the exact same way (40mg every 6hrs) that dr passed away and another dr from same practice took over my case again and has written the exact same prescription (40mg OxyContin every 6hrs) for over 4-1/2 yrs now. All of the sudden yesterday at my scheduled appt my current dr says he's going to have to change my prescription to a "appropriate dosage"... I was given the choice to up the mg to 60mg 1 every 8 hrs or be changed to Opana. I said I'm really not wanting to stop the medication that is working for me and I'm completely confused after 8+ yrs now all of the sudden you say I'm not on an "appropriate dosage" and I'm confused!!! I can't wrap my mind around why all of the sudden this is an issue after all these years! My biggest questions are: 1. Should I actually increase my dosage to 60mg every 8 hrs (which will be a 20mg increase... which I don't understand why!) or change over to opana? 2. Does this seem to be appropriate dr care? 3. Should I obtain a second opinion? 4. Will I have withdrawal? 5. Should I just stop taking it completely? I'm so confused! I'm scared of possible withdrawal at this point and the fact of ending up going back into the hospital every few months due to modifying my prescription that by the way is working with great results! I have genetic chronic reoccurring pancreatitis, diabetic neuropathy is the reasons for being on this medication to begin with by the way! Please help me I'm soooo confused as what to do!

Unfortunately, due to new regulations that were put in place last year, the choice to make this change is out of the doctor's hands. They have been severely restricted in what they can prescribe, how much they can prescribe and how often they can prescribe it. Exceptions can only be made for those that have intractable pain due to a possibly terminal condition, such as stage 4 cancer.

That said, if the Oxycontin is working so well for you, then you may be better off sticking with it by upping the dosage and changing how often you take it, as your doctor has suggested.

This medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
