How To Taper Off Temazepam Completely (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Please help; doctor doesn't want me as a patient anymore, reasons are ridiculous and too long to get into, but now she has put me in a jam. I was taking Clonazepam 2mg. 2 tablets 2x per week(for anxiety & sleep), & Temazepam 30mg. 2 tablets 2x per week(for sleep). I have been on both these drugs for 2 1/2 years & want to get the heck off them. I noticed the last couple months; neither appeared to be helping the anxiety/sleep issues I have had; so basically I just want off both. I have been Clonazepam free for 11 days now. I CANNOT believe how I feel--like I could crawl right out of my skin; anxiety ridden, non stop talking,completely wired,nerves jumping in arms & legs, more and more and on and on. Bad idea to go cold turkey, but did & now out of them. So I have to deal with the withdrawal with that one I guess.... But like I mentioned, I also want to get off the Temazepam. Am not going to go more crazy & quit cold turkey on that one too. My tablets are 30mg. & I normally took 2-30mg. tablets on Mondays & Fridays. Since I don't have a doctor anymore--can anyone suggest how to taper till completed weaned off? I want to get off this crud asap. (as you probably notice, I have a high tolerance). I am taking generic Restoril 15 mg every night in capsule form...how do I wean off?
I was taking ambien 10 mg for 8 years and my dr. switched me to Restoril 15 mg because said it was safer, but I want to rid myself of sleeping pills, I am 74 yr. old.

I am determined to get off of Temazepam for good - been using for 2 years - 30 mg. pm. for sleep. Have fibromyalgia and chronic leg pain due to traumatic injury 16 years ago. The side effects of this drug are awful - I have memory loss and chronic constipation. I am sick of this - I have my natural remedies all lined up - 5 HTP; melatonin; and valerian root. Will talk to the pharmacist about gradually reducing my use of this awful pharmaceutical.

I need helpful advice, too about being weaned off of Temazepam. I've been on it for over 4 years to help me with symptoms of Menopause and a physical injury that both things kept me from sleeping. Moved to AZ from CO 2 months ago and it took me a month to
even find a GP! She decided to "wean"
me off of the Trazadone by giving me NOTHING, initially! After a week of NO sleep she relented and gave me Trazadone! What?! That's for
depression! Then she gave me Doxepin, what is it with doctors weaning people off of a "narcotic" sleep medication by giving a dependent person antidepressants? I'm already in Zoloft, for Heaven's sake, why do I need more?! I'm gaining weight like crazy because I'm eating all night long and not getting any exercise, because I'm too exhausted! Anybody out there-HELP ME, please?! Tell me what I need to be doing????? Thank you!

I have been taking Temazepam 15 mg for 10 years. I would like to stop taking this drug, but I heard that the WD are awful. Can I gradually taper off? These are capsules which are hard to cut in half. Dd they come in tablets?

I'm 64Yrs & have taken Temazepam 30mg from the mid 1990s until July 2014 at which point I wanted to wean down. I began 22.5mg until now Sept 2015. My next decrease will be to 15mg on Oct 1,2015.
Im highly allergic to most drugs overall & can only tolerate my Synthroid 100mc, Atenolol 25mg (12.5 twice daily)
I have had 82 surgeries & bad injuries ANDcant even tolerate aspirin, motrin, tylenol, etc. Let alone a pain pill, most heart meds, etc. I really suffer.
I would ask your Dr to decrease. You to the 7.5mg for awhile, taken daily, then skip a day on the 7.5mg dosage to wean completely off . Due to my daily pain from Sjogrens, Fibro, post ablative hypothyroidism & drug sensitivities, I have gone to ER alot. Pain of course increases BP&P so the ER Drs gave me Ativan IV which calmed me down.
I have since been given Ativan 1mg pill but I break into 1/4s, then 1/8s which helps the anxiety, pain,muscle spasms.
I wouldn't. Take more due to it being so powertful, addictive, etc. Temazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Valium. Are all Benzos.
Wean by time. Dont rush due to side effects

Please read the information in this link. There is information on benzos and sample tapering plans. Dr Ashton also explains how to cross over to a tablet form of the medication from a capsule if needed. I am 4.5 months off and feeling so much better.

@Kent-This was (I think) your last post to this board. I agree with everything you've posted here, and just wanted to thank you for being so logical and detailed. I've stopped Temzepam before however I was 11 years younger, so this time is making me a bit nervous. I kept thinking, isn't my system going through some kind of withdrawal all day/every day because I take 30mgs at night only? You posted exactly that. That mathematically/physically it is. I also agree with the couple of your posts about (basically) knowing yourself, what your made, and knowing what you can/will tolerate to accomplish the result(s) you want. I'm being more careful this time because of my age, but I SO appreciate your thoughts here. They made me feel better about what I had thought about the drug, AND what I know I can/will do. Don't know who you are, or if you'll ever see this, but THANK YOU.

I was on sleeping tablets from a very young age due to life style. I was on very very strong sleeping medication and then put on Temazepam in my twenties. I am coming seventy and wanted off of them before my seventieth birthday. I think your best way is to gradually cut down to one and them just very slowly shave a little off every now and then. I am now off and have four months to go to my seventieth. Cannot tell you what a thrill it is. It's good to share. I hope you are truly blessed to come off of them bless you

Benzos are horrible and extremely dangerous to go cold turkey off of..they attach to gaba and could take up to months to rid your body...you could have seizures going off cold turkey...I was on clonopin very low dose once at night..someone stole mine at airport so I figured I stop taking them no big deal...I almost died..please get help!

I am coming off 15 mg temazapam capsules. Been opening the capsule, first dumping only the excess that comes out when the top is removed. a few weeks later, I started tapping some out of the full bottom, a couple of weeks later, I increased the amount i was tapping out...measuring by eye. Then I got enough out that i could hold the capsule up to the light and measure the empty space on a ruler. I have been at 1/8 inch empty space for about three weeks. Last night, i started heading for 1/4 inch of empty space on the ruler. I am probably close to 8 mg. This seems like a long time, BUT, I have experienced NO problems at all. Last year, I came off lorazepam, cutting the pill with a pill cutter. Took me 3 1/2 months, but no problems. For me, I just took time and pared back. My only other med was for blood pressure. What are the withdrawl signs of Temazepam, exactly? I've been on them for 8 yrs. 22.5 mg. nightly taken with 10mg melatonin. 5 wks ago I learned how addictive they are and how dangerous they are to come off of- possibly causing death! So i was released from the hospital 3 weeks ago following multiple surgeries, 1 very serious bowl resection and new ostomy. Thought it may be best to wean off Temazepam while on strong pain Rx. Does that make sense? So for past 3 weeks I take a Temazepam only every other night at bedtime. Along with pain medication and melatonin. I have extreme anxiety, lethargy, hopelessness, and vague thoughts of suicide occasionally for a future time (fear of pain and unknown Dx) BUT I have contributed these to physical pain, sudden financial hardship, isolation, and a drawn out 3 yr divorce process not yet finished from an abusive husband I recently moved out of state to flee. So.. Hard to know if my being an emotional mess is withdrawal from Temazepam or understandable with my health and overwhelming social issues. What do you think? It's why I wish to know withdrawal signs AND if I am going about it correctly. Haven't been here long enough to have a PCP doc to see for guidance on this. Does body size make a difference on dosage? I weigh 109 now. Almost no appetite. Anything you can share or advice?

Hi regarding tamazapan the best way to wean yourself by halving the dose and then halving again until your body is free of the drug!
How long to halve them for is up your own body and mind set! Good luck

The Greek... Thank you. I havent had a Temazepam for about a week now. Do you think it's ok just to not take any more? I do still take a hydrocodone or 2 late in the afternoon and around 2 am for pain remaining from Aug surgery. Those will soon be gone. In evening I have muscle or joint pain, a bit like flu, but no fever. Is this a mild withdrawal symptom? If so, should I expect it to worsen in a week when I am out of hydrocodone? Advice? Plz and thx

I was prescribed 30 mg of Temazapam over 16 years for restless leg syndrome, after undergoing a sleep study. My "new" sleep Dr., was astounded for someone that weighs about 90 pounds. New Dr., performed new sleep study, said good news you don't have sleep apnea. Not what I was tested for, so now left with how do I do this? I've read past posts, am a recent kidney transplant recipient and would like to get off this medication. Any suggestions, as I don't have the confidence of new Dr.?

I have 30 mg capsules and my Dr has advised me to open the capsule and shake a bit off each nigh slowly until I am finally weaned off I'll keep you udated.

You do get Temazepam Tablet form in the U.K. Been on this and other strong drugs for over 10 years. At my last appointment with my Dr she asked me if I ever intended to get off these drugs! Don't like to say this to her but I'm scared s***less. I've tried a few times in the past. And head blowing off is no exaggeration. The only way I can explain it is as if people are shouting in my head, I can't think, can walk, can't talk even to close friends or family. Anyway I'm taking up to 100 mgs of Valium & 60 mgs of Temazepam at night. I really wish everyone all the best that's trying to rattle through it, but for me that's not a option as I think there's a chance I'd die. Some great info here. Wish my dr would take a look (no chance of that). Anyway again all the best and I wish ya a speedy recovery.

I have been weaning off 15mg of Temazepam also after 1 year of nightly use. Pharmacist says it's ok to open capsule and dissolve in warm water, so I used a marked 1 ml syringe that pharmacist gives out. added 1 ml of warm water each time and gradually reduced dosage every 5 days by .1 ml did still have withdrawal effects, but bearable.
