I am 36 weeks pregnant and about a week ago i tested positive for opium when my doctor drug tested me. I took what i thought was a over the counter pain med cuz my back went out but apparently my "friend" had given me a 30 mlg oxy. now child protective services are involved and i was told once my child is born they will test the placenta for drugs and was wondering how long do oxys stay present for that kind of testing? please help i dont want to lose my kids.

Your best bet (i too am a recovering addict and have relapsed before) seek counseling and maybe some maintenance meds. They don't just rip children from their mothers. Cps tries to preserve the family in most cases. If you seek help, that always looks good for you..

This post is from a while ago but needed to comment because of the distasteful, uneducated, and indelicate judgmental responses from people who do not understand chronic pain in pregnancy. unfortunately, people who pass tasteless judgement on pregnant women whom suffer from chronic pain or malignant pain (cancer) are ignorant for having the audacity to pass nasty judgement of any kind. There's always a risk and many variables to factor. In regards to the comment that women who require pain medication to function should not have children; how low are you! Women who need pain medication, don't take it lightly. Im pregnant and have a 2 year old soon. Due to chronic illnesses I need pain relief to just get up and moving. I used to cry and worry for fear of harming my child and the scrutiny uneducated society. All whom have commented attacking post for sharing-SHAME ON YOU.. It's called empathy people. I pray to all whom passes judgement never suffers from debilitating pain pregnant or not. And I would bet to all of you who says who wouldn't, I bet when you have pain so bad you can't breathe 24/7 you'll be screaming a different tune!! Read peer review articles and educate yourself and leave hateful, attacking comments for yourself people. If you need pain management while pregnant talk with your OB and see a high risk. Don't let anyone make you feel degraded for making a decision that the risk out weigh the benefits.

Plz help my friend stop taking percocets and Vicodin at 20 or 21weeks she was doing them untill 20 or 21 weeks would this show up in the placenta ?? She's due end of December or the first of January she has stopped and still in drug and alcohol classes today

Hi I'm 28 weeks pregnant and my regular doctor has had me on 30mg extended release through my pregnancy and explained to me that as long as I am off them at least 4 weeks before I deliver that my baby will be fine no withdrawals when born and will no longer be detectable in her system I'm trying to ween myself off them currently but I'm terrified of what my baby will go through while I'm withdrawing and then I read all these comments about when the baby is born and I'm extremely scared any advice for me

For a nurse, you a extremely close minded & ignorant. Do you not understand, that drug addiction is NOT a choice? NOBODY wakes up, one morning, and says,"Hey! I'm going to become a drug addict!"
It is a very difficult thing to overcome, & prescription medication is a much better route for a mother, compared to the alternative. Yes, withdrawing is an awful, Awfull thing for a newborn baby to go through... But it IS better then having a dead baby.
Learn more about addiction, before you try to judge it, because it is extremely obvious... To EVERYONE, that you have NO IDEA.

It's hard to stay clean while pregnant. I was clean and relapsed unfortunately. So I talked to the doc and went to the methadone clinic until I gave birth. Cause I didn't want to lose the baby if I stopped cold turkey. But once the baby was born I stopped going and handled the withdrawal for myself. They can look back as long as they want to I believe. But if you stay clean, and dont test positive anytime they will still test the baby's poop, cause they give them a medicine when first born. That could kill them, if the mother was on opiates while pregnant. I was only on pain pills, but its really important to be honest with your doctor. They are there to help.

Umm 30% of pregnant women are prescribed narcotic pain meds I believe there is more harm done with street drugs than prescribed ones as long as your baby or you are not addicted

I had a baby on January 17. I have two children in foster care already and am currently attending a methadone/outpatient rehab program. My baby was healthy and did not need a morphine taper. I have been sober five months and just recently failed two drug tests on Monday. One urine and one mouth swab. This is very confusing because I was in the hospital and have not picked up. I have been taking my placenta in pill form since Friday and am wondering if the drugs that were taken by me early in my pregnancy, before I could get into treatment, have shown back up in my system due to me consuming my placenta. Please help. I do not want to lose my new born BC of something so silly.
