I have also had issue with meds I know I am taking daily not showing up on test. Not sure why this happens. I stated keeping a detailed log on what I take and when I change patches etc. I had major issues with the Fentanyl patch coming off. I only wore on my upper arm and switched to a different kind of medical tape to keep it on. I still have old ones that came off over 6 yrs ago and from time to time can put one on and get enough medicine out of it to kill my bad pain. I just saved the old wrappers an stuck them back to the plastic and back in the sleeve. I could get up to 5 days out of my patches so yes...they still can hold meds for awhile. I also had breakthrough meds though so that is why I could push them so long instead of changing every 3 days. I have learned after 11 yrs of pain management to save as much as I can because I will be switched back to the same stuff at some point. I hope you find a better tape to keep your patch on and maybe switching areas of the body where you keep it will help. Best of luck. We need it in the circle of pain..meds..and doctors.

My urine tests were negative for Fentanyl as well and was threatened w/discontinuation. I went to my primary care and asked for a blood test, which showed positive. When I brought the results to the pain clinic, they explained they test urine to show Fentanyl at a certain level, which was too high for my reading. The pain clinic now tests my urine for a lower level and it shows up everytime.
I don't remember the specific #'s/levels, but ask the pain clinic if they are testing for a certain amount, or ANY amount. That may clear it up. First get a blood test for fentanyl so you'll have the level/#'s to show them.

I've ran into so many conflicting answers, I'm confused, ticks me off, guess that's why we do the homework ourselves when we can. There have Been days in past that I wouldn't have been able to due to being too weak to text or type on the internet.

I hope this page helps:
Drug Use Time Table

I also found this one:
wiki.answers.com/Q/If_you_are_taking_fentanyl_will_a_drug_screen_be_positive_for_oxycodone?

I honestly believe there has to be a special test for it and I also believe that you're OK within 2-4 days depending on how much and how often it was taken, your size etc. Ex; I'm 100lbs 75 mg eaten in a two day period and I believe I'll be OK in my time. 4 days is what I've given myself- if not, I'll try to remember to come back and enlighten everyone. I also believe they need a special dip stick to test for it!! Keeping my fingers crossed, just remember, as I surely will, no use is good use if it's going to cause you problems and I'm speaking mainly to myself!!!! I cut off my noise to spite my face and said the old " I'll show you, I'll hurt me " saying!!! Can't believe I'm going through this shoot again, but the 1st site I posted is TRUE and I know that to be fact due to other meds I am legally prescribed!!!! Hoops Luck Everyone!!

Hon you should not have to be dealing with this crap! I hate how those of us that actually validly need pain medication, JUST TO FUNCTION, are paying the price for those who abuse it. You have the right to request that your test be sent to a lab. I'm assuming they are just doing a dipstick. These are quite often not accurate. I've been told I'm not taking my meds, that I'm doing marijuana & even meth. With further lab analysis these have been reversed. In your case where your quality of life & ability to work are at risk I'd contact an attorney. If nothing else you'll have your concerns on record. These Drs, pain clinics & laws are no longer helping those of us who needs it! :(
Good luck~

Fentanyl is out in 8-24 hours. See: Drug Use Time Table. It lists all drugs and how long they stay in urine, hair, and blood.

If I we're all of you, I would definitely not trust what anybody says on here. Most of the time people are posting messages about things they know nothing about. Well maybe they think they know but usually they are only guessing. So whaIf I we're all of you, I would definitely not trust what anybody says on here. Most of the time people are posting messages about things they know nothing about. Well maybe they think they know but usually they are only guessing. So what you need to do is go online and do the research yourself. You will be much better off. But I do have somewhat of an answer for you. My best friend has drug tests all the time for her job. If she has to test, they let her know by 5 am when she gets to work. And for the past 3 years she had been using Fentanyl subsys sprays. She has never showed up positive for anything and she takes them everyday. So if she drops, she takes it afterwards but doesn't take anymore past 10am and I guess that gives her body plenty of time to clean out. Also, they do send their U.A.'s to the lab. And she usually does 1 U.A. per week. I'm not sure though if patches leave the body in the same amount of time because the patches are designed to release small amounts throughout the whole day for days at a time. So I have no idea how long the patches fentanyl stays in the body. The sprays are out in no longer than 24 hours. I hope this helps a little bit. I just did some research for you and I found out that the Half-Life for the fentanyl Transdermal patches is 17 hours once the patch is removed from your body. (Half-life)- This is the period of time required for the concentration or amount ofdrugin the body to be reduced by one-half. We usually consider thehalf life of adrugin relation to the amount of thedrugin plasma. Adrug'splasmahalf-life depends on how quickly the drugis eliminated from the plasma.
I hope this information is beneficial to you. Be careful when it comes to trusting these forums because the people that don't know the facts and are just posting guesses because they want to feel smart, they don't care if they are right or wrong because they are not the ones who will end up in trouble or lose their job, etc.. ok well good luck to you and have a nice day! :)

I agree with Darcey 100%. The metabolites stay in your system longer, sometimes a great deal longer. All depends on usage, depends on the persons weight, depends on route of use. There are many variables that it depends on. People shouldn't post stuff to post stuff. And all the high and mighty's on here should ask there self how they came upon this forum...? You asked the same question everybody else did. I myself am going for my back surgery soon and they told me that the anesthesiologist would be using fentanyl along with another drug to put me under and that I need to stop using it before I go. I was checking how long before I go because I forgot to ask and its past business hours. Some folks need to chill out. Stop judging people. And those of you that are chewing on your patches, you need to be really careful. Too much and you can go into respiratory failure. I'm just saying. Wearing it is what it's for. And those of you who are abusing it, I just ask that you think about what you are doing... Addiction sucks ass... And for those of us that really need the medicine are given drug tests because of people abusing them. Depending on the insurance, those drug tests aren't cheap because they check for the amount in your system to ensure you're following the prescribed regimen. Mine does anyways. Anyways, to all who use it because you need it I wish you well and to those who use it for anything other than pain...I wish you well, too. I hope you are careful so that your loved ones don't have to miss you too early in your life. Take care everybody...

I am an (ex) doctor/paramedic/Coroner-CSI, got hurt working / disabled. I cannot and will not, give medical advice but van give information based on case studies and my own experience. I have found depending on a patients metabolism, weight, intake, output.
Fentanyl IV has a shorter span than patches; because patches are absorbed (best route) through the fatty tissue therefore will stay in the bodies system longer, the more MCG used, or less, if a person drinks plenty of fluids, i.e. water, cranberry juice it will somewhat help flush the system in 48-72hr as long as the patient is not a chronic user. When used in conjunction with water/green tea which is a natural "Cleanser" will flush the system of various medications. That's why I use to recommend patients NOT to drink green tea because not only will it affect a medications needed effect, but it is also a stimulant and it may increase dehydration via an in increase in urinary output, as well as some cases patients complained of GI issues. Diarrhea, upset stomach, aggravating ulcers as with any type of caffeine. Do not order any type of urine "cleansing" agents. In some states this is a FELONY. i.e. "altering urine" etc... The best route for cleaning your system is normally. If using green tea: remember to drink plenty of water prior to the day before. I have personally seen seen drinking unholy amounts of fluid show up on a urine lab test as a "diluted" sample. All of which are not good. The best information, repeat, information NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, I can give: If a persons medications are not working for them, but not due to abuse,a patient needs to sit down with their PM doctor or PCP, ask about different alternative medication or dosage. The best method is follow doctors orders. Due to drug abuse in this country. Physician's, including PM clinics have grown scared of prescribing medications. And restrictions / more states making physicians get pain management license or certifications, unfortunately legitimate patients are suffering. I have seen this on a personal level, as well as having seen it with other patients. So if an "Abuser", I respectively would love to see more screening of the legitimacy of " Chief Complaints" so to weed out the dealers BS artists. There needs to be more testing rather than "Red Flagging", profiling, stiffer sentences for CS dealers. Focus on the real problem allow legitimate physicians to treat REAL patients, and weed out dealers and abusers.

Fentany definitely does not show up as an opiate. A separate test is required to detect fentanyl.many places are instituting this test though

Miss,
If you call the 800- number on the back of the box, they will provide patch overlays for free (if you use patch from PAR or MALINKRODT). That keeps them from falling off.

Yes that I what I am saying. I get tested randomly once a month and it's never shown up. But, on a gc/mc it will show up. Need to know what type of test they are doing.

random = occurring without a pattern...so I believe what they meant is that sometimes there's a test, sometimes not. Or maybe they're 'called in' for a test every month; but, don't know when it will occur until it does.

Alright, if everyone is so smart on here answer me this question RN with a masters degree. I am an analytical thinking person work with all kinds of IT equipment and troubleshoot regularly. I have chronic pain, I am not stupid, have tons of certifications in the IT field and I am furious right now. I have been on morphine IR for 10 years, been through every kind of help available to get rid of my chronic pain but it is there and needs medication to treat it. I was also on 3o mg extended release morphine as well to try to control the pain but was switched to fentanyl patches(25 mcg patches) every 72 hours. For the first time in 8 years I was urine tested and guess what? The fentanyl DID NOT show up in the test but the morphine did. I was flabbergasted at the result. Never have I asked for refills early, in fact I usually go past the refill date on the IR morphine but use the patches every 3 days. I went back a month later, same result. I brought in the used patches, showed the doctor those patches as well as the one I had on and still NO SHOW on the fentanyl. Now I am getting really frustrated and being made to feel like I am not using them but selling them (Never in a million years would I do that as I need them to help me through the day and to sleep at night). I am being made to feel like a criminal and I am a good person who had a failed 3 level neck fusion that also killed a muscle in my upper back, which was tested by a shoulder doc who works with the Twins.

He said there was nothing I could do for the pain and that some day (he couldn't tell me when) the pain would just go away). It hasn't to this day and I have been through injections, therapy, radio frequency, message, heat, cold, and nothing helps but the pain medication at this point. Now 2 months later I go to my doctor and she gives me a blood test this time. Again, now frustrated beyond belief, I am told that the fentanyl is not showing up and the only reason for that would be if I wasn't using them. WRONG, I am a good person, work hard at my job, but narcotics have NEVER given me any kind of euphoria. The only thing that these narcotics have ever done is to make the pain tolerable. I realize I will never be at a 0 pain level and can live with a 4-5 level but when it gets to a 10 at the end of the day I need something that is going to help me sleep. I use 3 Lidoderm patches at night as well to help make things tolerable. My whole point is I am doing everything according to the book and still these stupid tests are coming back with zero, that's right zero in my system. I have a call into the manufacturer right now to find out how that is possible. Maybe the manufacturer is making them so they somehow do not show up or with sub par materials, I do not know but there has to be some kind of explanation as why it is NOT showing up. Like I said, I am an honest person who has followed every rule in the book being made to feel like I am doing something wrong. Now I know how someone who is innocent getting convicted of a crime they didn't commit feels. It does not feel very good and makes you angry when you do everything as directed but are getting accused of doing in differently.

If anyone in the medical field has some kind of answer please, please, please help me out with some kind of explanation. I put my patches in the same location every time and cover them with tagaderm patches so they do not fall off. I put them about 4 inches above my waistline on my right side and do not vary the placement much but in that area. I have showed my general physician my patch every time I have been in to see her and she has not said anything. Now she wants me to take time off of my new job to see a pain doctor in their clinic and I will have to take time off of work now to go see this doc whom I have already seen 4 years ago. He told me there was nothing more he could offer to do for me because I had tried every means available that he would use. I told this to my GP but she insists that I see him. I need help here and I have no idea where to get it.

Opioid = Opiate, they all metabolize into either morphine or codeine when ingested, theibane or any of the basic opiate alkaloids included. Most modern drug tests detect METABOLITES of the narcotics, NOT the drug chemical itself. Fentanyl may be out of urine in 72 hours but its metabolite will take longer. Heroin stays for 2-3 days but its primary metabolite 4-MAM stays for 7 days give or take. Do not post misinformation, at least check your facts and use references. There is an overabundance of falsities and hearsay convoluting the internet and people are depending on finding truth when seeking answers. Think before you give advice and know what your talking about.

I'm the president and run america.....oh and I have a master's degree. And I say stuff just to say it. Anyone with half a brain can look it up synthetic opiates (opioids) fentanyl, oxycontin.... do not show up unless testing for them. For example military drug testing never tested for opioids but tested for opiates and once oxycontin and opioids started getting bad with soldiers they started testing for them.

Man you should read more on a topic before you comment lol. It's synthetic and he was right, think before you hit send.

Fentanyl does NOT show up on a standard paneled urine test. I just took one and it came back neg for opiates and I have been using for months. It does probably show up in a lab setting, but not 100%.

I have also been on the Fentanyl patch for several years and had similar issues with the patch falling off in the shower/if I sweat too much. I was very fortunate that a friend introduced me to Hypafix tape, it's the BEST I have found to hold my patches on for as long as I need them on. The tape can be purchased from a medical store or online (I use Med Ezpress). I buy the 4 in x 10 yards which fits all patches. I'm also have an extreme allergy to most adhesives so I use Skin-Pre. First - place a new patch where no patch had been in the last 12 and hold it there for 2-4 minutes, I then use the skin-prep all around. Make sure to cut a large piece of the Hypafix tape and have already cut it down to the correct proportions, it should still be bigger than the patch as you want a good seal around against your skin. I wear my patches to shower, swim, any other water activity and have not had one fall of yet since using the Hipa-fix tape. My doctor said to use it is also as it is a good/cheap alternative to much more expensive adhesives. Good luck!!
